Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g’s Frontiers <strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Education symposium<br />

SAVANNAH (14-Oct-09) - A Georgia Institute <strong>of</strong> Technology faculty member<br />

has been <strong>selected</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>take</strong> <strong>part</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g’s (NAE) Frontiers <strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Education (FOEE)<br />

symposium.<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Dirk</strong> <strong>Schaefer</strong>, an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>in</strong> Georgia<br />

Tech’s Woodruff School <strong>of</strong> Mechanical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, will jo<strong>in</strong> 48 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

nation’s brightest young eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g researchers and educa<strong>to</strong>rs who<br />

have been <strong>selected</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>take</strong> <strong>part</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>augural symposium.<br />

<strong>Schaefer</strong>, who works at Georgia Tech’s Savannah campus, was<br />

<strong>selected</strong> along with o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong>p eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g faculty members <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

first half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir careers who are develop<strong>in</strong>g and implement<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>novative educational approaches <strong>in</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>es. They<br />

will ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> Herndon, Va., November 15-18 <strong>to</strong> share ideas and best<br />

practices <strong>to</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir home <strong>in</strong>stitutions. “I am proud that<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Schaefer</strong> is play<strong>in</strong>g a strategic role <strong>in</strong> transform<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

education,” said David Frost, direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Georgia Tech-Savannah. “We<br />

are fortunate <strong>to</strong> have someone <strong>of</strong> his caliber as <strong>part</strong> <strong>of</strong> our Savannah<br />

campus.”<br />

The <strong>part</strong>icipants were nom<strong>in</strong>ated by fellow eng<strong>in</strong>eers or deans and<br />

chosen from a highly competitive pool <strong>of</strong> applicants. <strong>Schaefer</strong>, who<br />

jo<strong>in</strong>ed Georgia Tech <strong>in</strong> 2006, has focused his research on <strong>the</strong><br />

strategic design <strong>of</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g virtual learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

environments and remotely/robotically controlled physical<br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ry exercises for distance learn<strong>in</strong>g sett<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
