SAVANNAH (14-Oct-09) - A Georgia Institute <strong>of</strong> Technology faculty member<br />

has been <strong>selected</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>take</strong> <strong>part</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g’s (NAE) Frontiers <strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Education (FOEE)<br />

symposium.<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Dirk</strong> <strong>Schaefer</strong>, an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>in</strong> Georgia<br />

Tech’s Woodruff School <strong>of</strong> Mechanical Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, will jo<strong>in</strong> 48 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

nation’s brightest young eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g researchers and educa<strong>to</strong>rs who<br />

have been <strong>selected</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>take</strong> <strong>part</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>augural symposium.<br />

<strong>Schaefer</strong>, who works at Georgia Tech’s Savannah campus, was<br />

<strong>selected</strong> along with o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong>p eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g faculty members <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

first half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir careers who are develop<strong>in</strong>g and implement<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>novative educational approaches <strong>in</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>es. They<br />

will ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> Herndon, Va., November 15-18 <strong>to</strong> share ideas and best<br />

practices <strong>to</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir home <strong>in</strong>stitutions. “I am proud that<br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Schaefer</strong> is play<strong>in</strong>g a strategic role <strong>in</strong> transform<strong>in</strong>g eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

education,” said David Frost, direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Georgia Tech-Savannah. “We<br />

are fortunate <strong>to</strong> have someone <strong>of</strong> his caliber as <strong>part</strong> <strong>of</strong> our Savannah<br />

campus.”<br />

The <strong>part</strong>icipants were nom<strong>in</strong>ated by fellow eng<strong>in</strong>eers or deans and<br />

chosen from a highly competitive pool <strong>of</strong> applicants. <strong>Schaefer</strong>, who<br />

jo<strong>in</strong>ed Georgia Tech <strong>in</strong> 2006, has focused his research on <strong>the</strong><br />

strategic design <strong>of</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g virtual learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

environments and remotely/robotically controlled physical<br />

labora<strong>to</strong>ry exercises for distance learn<strong>in</strong>g sett<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

INNOVATIVE EARLY-CAREER ENGINEERING FACULTY SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN<br />

NAE'S FIRST FRONTIERS OF ENGINEERING EDUCATION SYMPOSIUM<br />

WASHINGTON – Forty-n<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> nation's brightest young eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g researchers and educa<strong>to</strong>rs have<br />

been <strong>selected</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>take</strong> <strong>part</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g's (NAE) first Frontiers <strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Education (FOEE) symposium. Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g faculty members <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> first half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir careers who are<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g and implement<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>novative educational approaches <strong>in</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> discipl<strong>in</strong>es will come<br />

<strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r for <strong>the</strong> 2-1/2-day event, where <strong>the</strong>y can share ideas, learn from research and best practice <strong>in</strong><br />

education, and leave with a charter <strong>to</strong> br<strong>in</strong>g about improvement <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir home <strong>in</strong>stitution. The <strong>part</strong>icipants<br />

were nom<strong>in</strong>ated by fellow eng<strong>in</strong>eers or deans and chosen from a highly competitive pool <strong>of</strong> applicants.<br />

"The Frontiers <strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Education program will create a unique venue for eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g faculty<br />

members <strong>to</strong> share and explore <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g and effective <strong>in</strong>novations <strong>in</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g and learn<strong>in</strong>g,” said NAE<br />

President Charles M. Vest. “We <strong>in</strong>tend for FOEE <strong>to</strong> become a major force <strong>in</strong> identify<strong>in</strong>g, recogniz<strong>in</strong>g, and<br />

promulgat<strong>in</strong>g advances and <strong>in</strong>novations <strong>in</strong> order <strong>to</strong> build a strong <strong>in</strong>tellectual <strong>in</strong>frastructure and commitment<br />

<strong>to</strong> 21st-century eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g education.”<br />

The program will focus on effective ways <strong>to</strong> ensure that students learn <strong>the</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g fundamentals, <strong>the</strong><br />

expand<strong>in</strong>g knowledge base <strong>of</strong> new technology, and <strong>the</strong> skills necessary <strong>to</strong> be an effective eng<strong>in</strong>eer or<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g researcher. “In our <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly global and competitive world, <strong>the</strong> United States needs <strong>to</strong><br />

marshal its resources <strong>to</strong> address <strong>the</strong> strategic shortfall <strong>of</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g leaders <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> next decades,” said<br />

Edward F. Crawley, Ford Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g at MIT, and chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first FOEE. “By hold<strong>in</strong>g this<br />

event, we have recognized some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>est young eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g educa<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> nation, and will better<br />

equip <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> transform <strong>the</strong> educational process at <strong>the</strong>ir universities.”<br />

The symposium will be held Nov. 15-18 <strong>in</strong> Herndon, Va.<br />
