SYnoPSiS
Nora and Solveig are hiking through a snow-covered, starkly beautiful landscape
on a tour of several days that will take the two young women to the top of a
mountain. Solveig, three months pregnant, seems incapable of doing anything
the way Nora wants her to, from building the tent to folding the sleeping bags. In
fact, Nora only seems able to forget her simmering anger with Solveig in a very
few harmonious and intimate moments. Something is weighing upon Nora, an
unspoken accusation that poisons the atmosphere between them. The further the
women advance on their trip, the more erratic Nora becomes, sometimes disappearing
from the campsite, leaving Solveig alone and frightened. Solveig is particularly
terrified at the thought of losing Nora, and of what would become of her if she
were on her own, with the child she will give birth to. Finally, they reach their
destination, the place where they suffered a traumatic experience two years earlier.
As they arrive at the top of a wind-swept cliff, the two women are engulfed by
emotions that shake them to their very roots – and that might show them the way
to a better future. Two women, alone together, on the brink ...
Young Norwegian filmmaker Ole Giæver delivers a universal and dramatic first
feature about a young couple trying to find the way back to their love after a
traumatic experience. Mutual reproaches linger below the surface and are given
voice in tense, brief dialogues symptomatic of a profoundly troubled relationship.
It is a sharply observed and sensitively perceived journey into the minds of two
women who must make fundamental decisions about their lives and their love.
director’S Statement
ole giÆver
THE MOUNTAIN is a movie which, with its simple and limited frames, distinctly
focuses on the characters. The premise offers closeness and intimacy within the
universe of the film, which is mainly conveyed through the two complex women,
fighting with themselves and each other. The wild and brutal nature surrounding
them is a constant metaphorical reminder of the beauty they are unable to see.
These women are trapped in their own destiny; surrounded by conflicts they can’t
seem to resolve. But at the same time, they have a tangible moment where they
see themselves in relation to the other. This moment is the key for their emergence
from isolation and loneliness. They will have to dig deep during the trip to find
the way out, together.
THE MOUNTAIN is a film about the process of mourning, but also hope, and atonement,
without simple solutions. Even though the purpose of the women’s mountain
trip is deeply serious and tragic, the film also contains wonderfully trivial scenes
reminding us of the simplicities of being human. We see that life goes on and that,
even in difficult times, there is beauty around us: brushing teeth in a brook at
dawn, a helping hand crossing a screen, the sun breaking through after a rainfall,
snow flakes gently falling on eye lashes. Together with fragile sound and supporting
music, this film rests gently in our minds. But the weight, pressure, sorrow
and distance between the women colors the film, giving us the feeling that, much
like a rose, beauty often comes with a thorn.
Producer’S Statement
Karin JulSrud | Producer and ceo in 4 1/2
I have known Ole Giæver, one of Norway‘s most talented directors, for a number
of years. However, I did not have the pleasure of working with him until two years
prior, when we collaborated on SUMMERHUSET (‘SUMMER PAST’), a short film which was
supported by the Norwegian Film Institute‘s program for “Young Talents”. Working
with Ole on this short film afforded me the opportunity to understand the depths of
his creative aptitude; it was also the jumping off point for future collaborations.
SUMMERHUSET turned out to be much more than the average “short” film; it had
a cinema release, and actually opened the Tromsø International Film Festival.
Our collaboration was not only commercially successful, but also personally very
satisfying. The process was great fun, and much more productive than we ever
thought possible. In fact, we are already hard at work on his next feature, MOT Å
(‘WHERE THE ROAD ENDS’).
So, when Ole expressed a desire to shoot another feature film in between
SUMMERHUSET and MOT Å, I immediately jumped on board, even though he kept the
details of the project secret, and only shared it with me once the editing process
was underway. I saw THE MOUNTAIN for the first time in December 2010, and felt
immediate relief and excitement that I was a part of the project. To me, this film is
a tight, touching, and extraordinary story about a universally identifiable human
relationship. Additionally, the mountainous backdrop gives the story an added
dimension which is impossible to ignore.
I am delighted to support Ole in his work on THE MOUNTAIN. Together, we can bring
the film to where it belongs: with audiences, both in Norway and abroad.
