Interest and prices <strong>in</strong>crease for heavy lambs<br />

The bidd<strong>in</strong>g on market lambs was lower than at previous sales<br />

The W<strong>in</strong>nipeg Lives<strong>to</strong>ck Auction<br />

received 300 sheep and<br />

goats for the Nov. 21 sale.<br />

The buyers were keep<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong><br />

a close price range, with<strong>in</strong> their<br />

bidd<strong>in</strong>g, on the various classifications.<br />

Ontario market prices are<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluenc<strong>in</strong>g the Mani<strong>to</strong>ba bidd<strong>in</strong>g<br />

The wool sheep dom<strong>in</strong>ated<br />

ewe sales, with the bidd<strong>in</strong>g consistent<br />

with the previous sale. The<br />

average price ranged from $0.45<br />

<strong>to</strong> $0.75 per pound; while the last<br />

sale produced a price range from<br />

$0.39 <strong>to</strong> $0.58 per pound. Even the<br />

heavyweight ewes were with<strong>in</strong> the<br />

price range, a group of four 216lb.<br />

Suffolk-cross ewes provided<br />

a price of $0.60 per pound. Six<br />

110-pound Katahd<strong>in</strong>-cross ewes<br />

brought $78.10 ($0.71 per pound).<br />

The bidd<strong>in</strong>g on the rams was<br />

limited. The 230-pound Rideaucross<br />

ram brought $144.90 ($0.63<br />

per pound). The 195-pound<br />

Cheviot-cross ram brought<br />

$103.35 ($0.53 per pound). A<br />

four-horn, 155-pound Jacob ram<br />

entered the arena, with some<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest from the audience. This<br />

ram brought $80.60 ($0.52 per<br />

pound).<br />

Dorset-cross lambs dom<strong>in</strong>ated<br />

the heavyweight lambs. The price<br />

ranged from $0.88 <strong>to</strong> $0.94 per<br />

pound, for weight rang<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

115 <strong>to</strong> 145 pounds. The demand<br />

for the heavy lambs rema<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

similar <strong>to</strong> the last sale.<br />

The bidd<strong>in</strong>g on the market<br />

lambs was not as strong as at previous<br />

sales, which drew prices<br />

downward. The price ranged<br />

from $1 <strong>to</strong> $1.02 per pound for the<br />

wool lambs.The 95-pound Katahd<strong>in</strong>-cross<br />

lamb brought $94.05<br />

($0.99 per pound). The group<br />

of 13 96-pound Blackface-cross<br />

and Suffolk-cross lambs brought<br />

$103.68 ($1.08 per pound).<br />

The bidd<strong>in</strong>g was not as excit<strong>in</strong>g<br />

or <strong>in</strong>tense for the feeder lambs.<br />

The wool lambs brought a price<br />

range from $1.11 <strong>to</strong> $1.18 for a<br />

weight range of 80 <strong>to</strong> 82 pounds.<br />

The six 89-pound Dorper-cross<br />

lambs brought $92.56 ($1.04 per<br />

pound).<br />

The lightweight lambs dom<strong>in</strong>ated<br />

this sale. The 70- <strong>to</strong><br />

79-pound lambs created a price<br />

range from $1.13 <strong>to</strong> $1.21 per<br />

pound.<br />

There were two groups<br />

of 56-pound lambs. The six<br />

56-pound Dorper-cross lambs<br />

brought $1.04 per pound. The<br />

other group of lambs brought<br />

$1.09 per pound. There were two<br />

groups of 58-pound Cheviotcross<br />

lambs, with no major visible<br />

differences <strong>in</strong> the lambs. However,<br />

one group brought $1.18<br />

per pound and the other group<br />

brought $1.25 per pound.<br />

The 45-pound Blackface-cross<br />

lamb brought $52.88 ($1.175 per<br />

pound).<br />

Three 35-pound Cheviot-cross<br />

lambs brought $28 ($0.80 per<br />

pound).<br />

The quality and the <strong>in</strong>terest for<br />

the goat does was not as strong as<br />

the last sale. The seven 96-pound<br />

Alp<strong>in</strong>e-cross does that were highquality<br />

dairy does brought $53<br />

($0.55 per pound). The 70-pound<br />

Alp<strong>in</strong>e-cross doe was of similar<br />

fashion, with limited bidd<strong>in</strong>g. It<br />

brought $30 ($0.43 per pound).<br />

The selection of goat bucks<br />

was very limited. An impressive<br />

225-pound Boer-cross buck<br />

entered the arena, good quality<br />

for future herd improvements.<br />

This Boer-cross buck brought<br />

$157.50 ($0.70 per pound). Three<br />

132-pound Boer-cross bucks<br />

brought $98 ($0.74 per pound).<br />

A group of 18, 85-pound Boercross<br />

bucks, brought $70 ($0.82<br />

per pound).<br />

Two 103-pound Pygmy-cross<br />

ewes brought $62.50 ($0.61 per<br />

pound).<br />

Two 83-pound Boer- cross<br />

kids, brought $82 ($0.99 per<br />

pound).<br />

A well-developed structural<br />

75-pound Alp<strong>in</strong>e-cross wether,<br />

brought $85 ($1.13 per pound).<br />

A Saanen-cross wether and a<br />

Boer-cross wether, both be<strong>in</strong>g 70<br />

pounds, brought $89 ($1.27 per<br />

pound).<br />

N<strong>in</strong>e 64-pound Alp<strong>in</strong>e-cross<br />

goat kids brought $81 ($1.27 per<br />

pound).<br />

A group of seven 55-pound<br />

Alp<strong>in</strong>e-cross and Boer-cross<br />

goat kids brought $67 ($1.22 per<br />

pound). Four 56-pound Boercross<br />

goat kids brought $71 ($1.27<br />

per pound). Two 58-pound Boercross<br />

goat kids, brought $75 ($1.29<br />

per pound).<br />

N<strong>in</strong>e 45-pound Boer-cross goat<br />

kids brought $47.50 ($1.06 per<br />

pound ). Three 47-pound Alp<strong>in</strong>ecross<br />

goat kids brought $40 ($0.85<br />

per pound).<br />

Three 33-pound Boer-cross<br />

goat kids brought $32 ($0.97 per<br />

pound). Two 30-pound Boer-cross<br />

goat kids brought $45 ($1.50 per<br />

pound).<br />

The Ontario S<strong>to</strong>ckyard Report<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicated that the prices were still<br />

dropp<strong>in</strong>g for the various sheep<br />

and lamb classifications. Only<br />

the well-fed light lambs, still drew<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest from the buyers, keep<strong>in</strong>g<br />

a steady bidd<strong>in</strong>g price. Various<br />

goats were ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a constant<br />

price range, but still not very<br />

strong.<br />
