This bridge on Sunflower Road is a Township issue and is not safe for local trafic around the Highway 9 bridge.
Unsafe At Any Speed
Editorial
By Jon A. Brake
Waterville City Clerk Nori
Blackburn only lives a mileand-a-half
from where she
works and it takes five minutes
to drive. But, the Kansas
Department of Transportation
(KDOT) wants Nori to drive
47-miles to work and then
another 47-miles back home.
KDOT will close Coon
Creek Bridge one mile west of
Waterville on Highway 9 for
six months in 2014 and they
will not put in a “sho-fly.” A
“sho-fly.” is the detour at the
construction site that gets traffic
around the project.
KDOT wants Nori and
everyone else to drive to
Barnes and take K-148 north to
US-36 and then east to US-77
in Marysville and then south to
Blue Rapids and Waterville.
That is a total of 47-miles.
Someone needs to tell KDOT
that it will not happen. Locals
will not drive 47-miles one way
to get around a two-hundredfoot
bridge span.
There is another way, a
shorter way. You can travel
north out of Waterville past the
Cemetery and hit the river road
and go 8 miles west and hit
Barnes but most of that is a
sand Township Road and will
not be maintained as well as a
Kansas Highway or a County
Road. Oh, and another thing,
there is one bridge that has a 9
Ton load limit.
Valley Heights School
District has a bus that takes
Highway 9 west and picks up
17 children of all ages. The bus
weighs 19,500 lbs., that's more
that 9 Ton without any children.
Does KDOT want the School
District to take the 47-mile trip
twice a day?
Farm trucks can use the
Sunflower bridge but not if
they are loaded.
KDOT said the Highway
will close in the fall of 2014
and stay closed until early summer
of 2015. Football anyone?
What about basketball, volleyball,
track and golf? There are
thirteen schools in the Twin
Valley League and all of them
use Highway 9.
Nori Blackburn, School
Buses and farm trucks are
inconvenient for those local
people but KDOT needs to be
VH Girls Out of Sub-State
FALL IN SUB-STATE...Drew Mann (35) scores two of her
16 points in their Sub-State basketball game against Honover
Friday night. Hanover won the game 58-52. Sidney Blackburn
(23) is ready for the rebount if needed.
told that this is a Safety Issue.
The State cannot throw hundreds
of cars and trucks onto
Township Roads and not create
a huge Safety Issue. Sand
Township Roads do not mix
with rain, sleet or snow without
someone being hurt or killed.
The KDOT design team that
made the decision not to put in
the “sho-fly” needs to reevaluate
the situation. The 47-mile
detour is “a bridge to far” and
the 17-mile detour that will be
used by locals is “Unsafe at any
speed.”
We need to let KDOT know
that a “sho-fly” is needed for
Safety. Call or e-mail:
The Story Of Tillie The Terrible Swede Is Told
Author Sue Stauffacher visited
Waterville and Blue Rapids
Monday. Staufacher held a
reception at the Waterville
Library and talked with students
at Waterville and Blue
Rapids Grade Schools.
A lot of the material used in
her book “Tillie The Terrible
Swede” was provided by Alice
Roepke. The book is about
Tillie Anderson of Chicago
who during the 1890’s was
taken in by the bicycle craze
that swept America.
LueAnn Roepke, Alice’s
mother-in-law has worked with
the Waterville Victorian Day’s
and knew Alice had all kinds of
information about her Great
Aunt Tillie Anderson and used
it in a display at Victorian
Day’s. Alice saw where
Stauffacher was going to do a
book about Tillie and contacted
her and they have traveled
together promoting the book.

two brothers, Stephen and
Ozzy, and is the daughter of
Michelle and Stephen Kinzel.
During Kinzel’s high school
career she has been a part of
FFA, Peer Tutor, Model UN,
and Show Choir for one year.
For two years she’s had places
in the All School, Art class and
Forensics. Outside of school
Kinzel enjoys LARPing (Live
Action Role-Playing games),
playing video games, and
“Pinterest… [I’m an] addict.”
Pinterest is a social media website
were people share ideas
such as crafts by posting
images. “I enjoy doing any random
craft, from making jewelry
to cutting up t-shirts.”
Kinzel believes she has
“really grown into her skin and
is the happiest she had ever
been.” Kinzel doesn’t concern
herself with how others will
remember her; she feel it is
more important to focus on
how she views herself.” Putting
Senior Of The Week: Katelyn Kinzel
before making a decision, is
what Kinzel feels makes her
unique and is an important trait
to have when considering politics,
another interest of
Kinzel’s. She is so involved in
the interest of politics that she
called into an online television
show to talk about whom she
wanted as president and why
The Constitution is so important.
Kinzel feels too old to be in
High School but still has a
childlike excitement about
what her future holds. The
excitement reminds her of
when she was a kid hearing the
Katelyn Kinzel
ice cream truck singing from
several blacks away and rushing
to the edge of the street
waiting in anticipation for its
arrival and the ice cream
reward. She hears her future
calling and is anxiously awaiting
the arrival of the graduation
and the new experience that
will fallow.
As of right now Kinzel’s
future dreams are to remain
involved in theater and art, possibly
as a theater teacher.
Recently she has auditioned for
a technical theater scholarship
to K-State University, in effort
to obtain a theater degree.
The Teens as Teachers volunteered
their time on
Wednesday, February 22, in
order to help elementary students
understand the dangers of
alcohol and tobacco use. The
organization, led by Kathy
Steinfort, brings coloring page
handouts, stickers, and various
demonstrations – like short
skits about the big bad wolf
smoking, and an assortment of
undesirable household chemicals
that are used in cigarettes –
to show the children what hazards
they will encounter by
divulging in bad habits. The
Teens as Teachers volunteered
their time at both Waterville
and Blue Rapids Elementary
from noon-3 pm. “My favorite
part was when the fourth
graders had to trace a body and
make it look like a smoker,”
said Freshman Katlynn Treff.
“My group was four girls and
one boy. The girls just took it
over and put jewelry and makeup
on their person.” Treff says
that it was really nerve racking
for her to be in front of people,
even ones as young as the elementary
students. “I’m just not
good in front of people, so I let
the others in my group do the
talking while I handed out the
coloring worksheets.”
in Marysville has seen lots of
activity the past month. In
observance of National Jello
enjoyed. Shoefly pie and sour
cream raisin pie were a special
treat for National Pie Day.
Heart Month was observed by
having 3 staff from Community
Memorial Healthcare present a
program on how to keep a
healthy heart. The Marysville
With lent upon us, many in
our community are making an
effort to eat more fish. While
everyone knows eating fish is
good for you, most of us don’t
make the effort to incorporate
more fish into our diet.
The fats in certain fish are a
great source of Omega-3 fatty
acids that research has shown
may help prevent heart disease,
diabetes, some types of cancers,
and arthritis. Omega-3
fatty acids may also help in the
prevention of Alzheimer’s and
help prevent blood clots that
cause stroke. Omega-3's help
to raise our HDL or food cholesterol
and may even help prevent
hearing loss.
Fish high in Omega-3 fatty
acids include salmon, mackerel,
herring, lake trout, sardines,
and albacore tuna. The latest
Dietary Guidelines for
Americans, which are published
by the Department of
Health and Human Services
and by the Department of
importance of eating fish at
least twice a week.
As our farmers and small
business owners age, they begin
to think about how they will
pass their farm or business to
the next generation. Also, with
the agricultural economy being
strong, we are seeing more
young people wanting to come
back to farm. To pass the farm
to the next generation requires
planning.
I would like to share with
you six steps by Michael
Langemeier, professor in
Kansas State University’s
Department of Agricultural
Economics, for farm and small
business transition planning. A
farm or business transition plan
can help farm operators and
small business owners chart the
course for future growth and
sustainability of their farm or
small business.
“Strategic planning, which
should be an ongoing process,
is most important during times
of transition,” Langemeier said.
When an operation is bringing
on a new family member or hiring
new employees, those are
vital times to devise or reevaluate
the strategic plan.
“Formally or informally, the
discussion needs to take place
between family members so
everyone knows their role,” he
said.
Once that discussion begins,
the most important topic is
assets, he added. Farm operations
have many assets that
of National Responsible Pet
Owner’s Month, Becca
(Sanner)Lanik, veterinarian
technician from Wahoo, NE,
presented a program on how to
keep a healthy pet. Melva
Sanner, Director of Country
Place, brought her Chesapeake
Bay Retriever, Bella, to demonstrate
various tricks and obedience
training Melva has done
with her. Mardi Gras was
observed with a traditional
New Orleans meal of
Jambalaya and King Cake with
the traditional tiny doll hid in
one piece. Musicians performing
for Country Place this
month were: Galen and
Thelma Latta, JoAnn Walcott,
Pauline Lindhorst, Tom
Schutts, Wayne Fisher, and
Larry and Betty Robb.
only about 15 pounds of fish
per person per year at home,
yet enjoy eating twice the
amount at restaurants each
year.
Cooking fish is not difficult
if we know some basics. It is
different than cooking beef.
Fish has very little connective
tissue, so it is more delicate
when cooked. The meat is not
red because, unlike a large animal,
it does not need a lot of
oxygen to move long distances.
Fish also continues to cook
after it is removed from the
heat, so we want to be careful
to not over cook. Marinating
can add flavor and moisture,
but fish should only be marinated
for about an hour and not
with an acidic tenderizer, which
can make the fish mushy.
Unless we live near a large
body of water, most of the fish
we prepare will be frozen or
canned. Fresh fish only keeps
one or two days in the refrigerator
and would then need to be
frozen. At the store, we are
most familiar with prepared
fish, like frozen fish sticks, fillets,
and canned tuna. After
frozen prepared fish and
canned tuna, canned salmon
comes in a close third in our
choices of fish. If you choose a
should be used efficiently. It is
important for farmers to monitor
their past performance, compare
themselves to competitors,
and determine if growth or staying
the same size will be the
most financially responsible.
Langemeier cited six steps
that can be beneficial for farm
operations.
Step 1- Develop an effective
mission statement. Consider
what makes the operation
unique, business values and
what the business should be
recognized for. Motivating
employees and focusing efforts
are two benefits of a clear mission
statement.
Step 2 – Formulate goals and
objectives for the business. This
means having specific, measurable,
attainable, rewarding and
timed smart goals which will
provide strong reference points
for decision making and measuring
progress.
It is important to have specific
goals. Instead of wanting the
farm to grow, specify you want
the farm to grow by a certain
profit or acreage each year.
Measurable goals let you look
back in five years and see if you
grew by a set amount.”
Using a SWOT analysis
investigates the strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities, and
threats associated with the business
in the third and fourth
steps.
Step 3 – Focus on firm
resources. Strengths and weaknesses
reflect the internal components
of the business.
prepared fish be sure to read the
package label. Many prepared
fish products contain mostly
breading, are deep fried which
make them high in unhealthy
fat, and can be high in added
salt.
Tuna is a healthy choice,
especially if packed in water
and served without adding
extra dressings.
We are going to focus on
salmon, which many nutritionist
consider one of our very best
foods for offering health benefits
and value. Salmon is a fish
even people who don’t like fish
can enjoy eating. Salmon is
firm enough to grill, bake,
poach, or broil and does not dry
out as easily as other fish.
Cooked salmon can be eaten
hot or cold. It comes fresh,
frozen, smoked, and canned.
Fresh salmon should smell
fresh, not fishy. If frozen, thaw
in refrigerator over night before
cooking. Either red or pink
canned salmon is easy to prepare
because it is already
cooked. Some canned salmon
contains bones, which can be
crushed and cooked into the
meat, but more prefer to
remove the bones and skin
before preparing.
This recipe is a quick and
Contemplate human, physical,
financial, technological, and
consumer resources. The
important thing to do is think
about changes that may occur in
the near future that would
impact your farm’s ability to
compete or changes that could
lead to profitable endeavors.
Step 4 – Evaluate opportunities
and threats in the external
environment of the business.
Survey the current and future
business environment centers
around competitors, markets,
powers of suppliers and buyers,
and the operating environment.
Ask such questions as, “What
are the key factors to competitive
success?” “What are the
industry’s dominant economic
traits?”
Step 5 – Identify and select
strategies to achieve goals and
objectives set in Step 2. This
step requires matches to be
made between strengths and
opportunities outlined in Steps
3 and 4.
Step 6 – Engage in continuous
self-assessment and strategy
refinement. Develop best
practices to monitor success.
Langemeier said that farmers
may need to make revisions if
their monitoring shows undesirable
outcomes from the strategic
plan. He recommends
reevaluating at the beginning or
end of each year, adding that it
won’t take much time, but is an
important way to start or end
the year.
Strategic planning is an
important part of the farm or
easy way to prepare and serve
salmon. You can use fresh (or
frozen and thawed) salmon.
Easy Baked Salmon
1 pound salmon steaks = 4
servings (or 1 individual package
per person)
Lemon juice
Olive or Vegetable Oil
Dill seasoning
Ground pepper
Onion
Preheat the oven to 350 F.
Place salmon steak on foil, skin
side down, and brush generously
with lemon juice and then
with oil. Sprinkle with dill and
pepper to taste. Place very thin
slices of onion on top of
salmon. Fold aluminum so it is
sealed and bake in pre-heated
oven for 18-22 minutes.
Thicker steaks will take longer
to cook than thinner steaks.
When done, the meal should
easily flake off with a fork.
Other flavors to try include
dijon mustard, salad dressings,
or barbeque. You might try
other seasonings such as basil,
tarragon, or parsley. Salmon
pairs well with many foods
including pasta, rice, or rye
breads. Refrigerate leftovers
immediately.
Blue Rapids Pool
The Blue Rapids Pool
Committee has been working
hard for the last four years to
keep our pool open. A couple
of years ago the city wanted to
shut our pool down due to the
pools conditions. We are in
desperate need of a new pool.
The committee has been
working hard on fundraisers
and getting a pool design
drawn up to show the community
their ideas. In August it
will be on the voting ballet to
possibly raise sales tax so we
can afford a new pool. If it
doesn’t pass it will go back on
the ballet in November.
If you have any questions
you may contact Jaime Land at
785 562 6242 or Jean
Gallagher at 785 268 0084.
All donations are accepted
and appreciated. They may
also be dropped off at the State
Bank of Blue Rapids.
The pool design includes
zero entry, baby pool, splash
pad, slide, 2 life guard stand,
high and low dive, a new pump
house, and a new bath house.
Hanover’s Ashley Hynek (13).
