News Blue Rapids Free Press - Thursday, May 3, 2012 Marshall County Minutes April 23, 2012 The Board of Marshall County Commissioners met in regular adjourned session with Thomas K. Holle Chairman; and Robert S. Connell member and Sonya L. Stohs, County Clerk present. Commissioner Loiseau was absent from the meeting. The meeting was called to order at 9:00 a.m. The Board opened the meeting with the flag salute. The minutes and agenda were approved as presented upon a motion by Robert S. Connell, seconded by Thomas K. Holle. Motion carried. Custodian Lou Wassenberg met with the Board to have the grant paperwork for a matching funds grant in the amount of $2,812.32 for the Kansas Waste Tire Program signed. Robert S. Connell moved, seconded by Thomas K. Holle approved the Chairman sign the Contract between Secretary of Health and Environment of Kansas and Marshall County for the 2012 Kansas Waste Tire Grant Program in the amount of $2,812.32. Motion carried. Robert S. Connell moved, seconded by Thomas K. Holle to approve the vouchers, as presented, and issue manual warrants from the respective funds. Motion carried. Robert S. Connell moved, seconded by Thomas K. Holle to approve the following purchase orders. Motion carried. Coloring sheets were handed out to all elementary school children the week prior and returned to the Bank on Monday the 23rd. Public Works Administrator Mike Craig recommended promoting Mike Griffee from Marysville Shop Senior Operator at $14.03 an hour to Marysville Shop Road Supervisor at $15.99 an hour effective May 1, 2012. Thomas K. Holle moved, seconded by Robert S. Motion carried County Attorney Laura Johnson-McNish met with the Board. Rapids also held a Customer Appreciation Day on Wednesday April 25. Cookies, coffee and ice tea were served to all who visited the office. A drawing was held on Friday afternoon for a Zebco fishing pole and a family pass to the BR City Pool. The lucky winners were Cora Collette, Blue Rapids who claimed the fishing pole and Kim Cummings, Waterville who received the pool pass. News Blue Rapids Free Press - Thursday, May 3, 2012 News Resident of the Month - Ruth Meyn I was born on December 24, 1917 in Marysville, Kansas. My parents were Oscar and Flora James Terry. We lived in Marysville while I was growing up. We moved onto a farm between Blue Rapids and Frankfort after I graduated from high school. I had five brothers. They are all deceased. We were very close and as a family we worked and played together. I went to grade school at Marysville and I graduated from Marysville High School in 1934. While I was in high school I took the Normal Teaching course. After high school I taught school for several years. I taught at the Pleasant Valley Country School, between Blue Rapids and Frankfort and was the last teacher at Fawn Creek Country School, between Blue Rapids and Waterville. I was married to Russell Gunn and we had three children. Barbara Youngstedt and her husband Larry live in Tonka Bay, Minnesota, Terry Gunn and his wife Judy live near Blue Rapids and Jon Gunn who lives in Blue Rapids. Russell is now deceased. I later had a ceramic shop set up in my basement and was able to combine my ceramic hobby and also have a small home business. I gave ceramic classes several evenings a week for several years. I made each of my grandchildren porcelain baby doll complete with Christening gowns, crocheted sweaters, bonnets and booties. Senior of the Week: Rachel Christie By Casi Cochrane VHHS Journalism A busy schedule is just one characteristic of an involved Rachel Christie Classifieds student’s life, which describes senior Rachel Christie. Christie’s high school sporting career includes: Volleyball 4 holiday decorations. I enjoyed gardening and had a wide variety of flowers in my yard. I came to Blue Valley Senior Living March 3, 2009. I have taken advantage of several of the activities they offer here. I years, Basketball 2 years, Cheerleading 2 years and Golf 1 year. Faith has played an important part of Christie’s life, which is why she looked toward the Bible for a quote that inspires her. After graduating from K-State, Christie aspirations to attend St. Louis University School of Optometry, to get a good job, and establish a family. Christi, born on April 28th 1994, is the daughter of Rod and Melinda Christie and little sister to CJ and Becca. She enjoys collecting bells from places she has visited, and is a fan of colorful socks, which was apparent on the court as she helped lead the Lady Mustang Volleyball team. One thing that Christie has done that most other students have not is conduct a funeral. Setting all of her accomplishments aside, Christie wants to be remembered as a very nice person who was always willing to help others.
