Rehearsals Underway for
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
M-ACT’s Summer Musical
Written by Andrew Lloyd
Webber
Cast members in the
Marysville Area Community
Theatre’s summer production
of Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat are
spending their rehearsals
singing … and singing … and
singing. With a musical score
written by Andrew Lloyd
Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice,
the actors are spending a significant
portion of their rehearsals
learning the various melodies,
intricate harmonies, and complicated
rhythms.
The show takes a humorous
look at the Biblical story of
Joseph and his coat of many
colors. Told entirely through
music, the show uses twenty
songs to tell the tale of Joseph
whose jealous brothers sell him
into slavery. Through his faith
and ability to capitalize on each
moment, Joseph uses his
dream-interpreting abilities to
overcome his obstacles and
eventually become an influential
Egyptian leader.
Unlike the traditional musicals
they have directed in the
past, Wayne Kruse, the show’s
director, and Tam Gordon, the
Boil Water Advisory
Rescinded for Waterville
Health and Environment
(KDHE) has rescinded the boil
musical director, are enjoying
the new artistic opportunities
this show provides.
Traditionally, the director
spends time with the actors
blocking the scenes and discussing
character development
while the musical director
works with the actors on vocal
interpretation of the songs. For
the first half of the rehearsal
process, the directors work in
isolation and then come together
to coordinate the singing,
acting, and dancing. Since
“Joseph” is told entirely
through song, this show provides
a different challenge.
“For me, doing an Andrew
Lloyd Webber show is somewhat
of a dream,” Gordon said.
“His shows are something you
travel to New York, Chicago,
Kansas City, or Omaha to see –
and we're doing it here. What I
thought would be such a challenge
- an entire show of music
- is actually turning out to be a
great collaboration of the directors
and choreographers. We’re
not so much working on the
parts individually and then trying
to put them all together;
we’re working as a team from
the beginning.”
According to Kruse, this
KDHE issued the advisory
on June 30 due to a water main
break which caused a loss of
pressure to the water distribution
system. Laboratory testing
on samples collected indicate
Blue Rapids Library
Holds Multicultural Day
In keeping with this summer’s
reading program theme
of “One World, Many Stories,”
the Blue Rapids Public Library
will have a multicultural day on
July 11.
Items that local people have
brought home from travels
abroad will be displayed.
Children who check out or
check in a book that day will
receive a coin from a foreign
country.
Children and adults can try
using chopsticks. Librarian
Lynne Turner will provide
pointers.
Special prizes that day will
be children¹s items from South
Korea.
team effort is paramount to the
show’s success.
“In order for us to pull off
this show, we need to rely on
some solid methods of collaboration,”
he said. “Since the
community theatre has been
around for nearly thirty years,
many of us have developed
some pretty strong relationships.
It’s these relationships
that allow us to brainstorm
ideas, problem solve issues,
and, ultimately, work together
to put on a quality production.
It’s a really rewarding experience.”
Not only does this show provide
new artistic challenges for
the directors, it also provides
new opportunities for the
actors.
Brian Cook, who’s been
involved with the theatre for
nearly ten years, has played
various roles in previous summer
musicals. In several, he’s
played the leading role. In
“Joseph,” he plays a supporting
role as the second-oldest brother,
Simeon; additionally, he
doubles as one of the male chorus
members.
“I’ve never been in so many
songs during a show,” Cook
said. “Even when I was the
no evidence of contamination,
and all other conditions that
place the system at risk of contamination
are deemed by
KDHE officials to be resolved.
The library¹s summer reading
program is under way.
Children who read at least 20
books, or 2,000 pages, will
receive a free book at the end
of the program in August. All
participants will receive a
prize.
Trying, I was in probably half
the songs I’m in for this production.”
According to Cook, the show
has “a lot going on” both for
the performers and for the audience
members.
“This show requires a lot of
energy,” he explained. “This is
a short show, but it probably
won’t feel like it to the audience,
as the sheer size of the
numbers will make the show
feel bigger and longer than it is.
There are very few solos in this
show, whereas normally in
musicals the featured performers
each have a solo or two. In
this show all of the songs are
almost exclusively chorus
numbers with a featured soloist
mixed in; it doesn’t feel like a
normal show.”
For Gordon, the chorus numbers
are her favorite. “I love
the songs where the choirs get
to sing the intricate beautiful
harmonies that he (Lloyd
Webber) wrote. And they all
get stuck in my head from
morning till bedtime.”
