With minimal multi-generation loss and a
long 124-minute tape, D-9 was the right
choice for Bisk Education
Bisk Education creates
graphics, animations and other
educational materials used in
BA, MBA and CPA programs
and delivered via broadband.
According to Mr. Mike Knight,
chief engineer/editor, total
viewers number about 35,000
(mostly in the United States)
and include CPAs (Certified
Public Accountants), doctors,
accounting majors, pre-CPAs,
and students who are getting
ready to take the CPA exam.
It was Knight’s decision to
purchase D-9 on the
recommendation of Mr. Doug
Tailor at Encore. “I saw D-9
four years ago at NAB,” said
Knight. “After comparing it to
DVCPRO, I chose D-9.” In
October of 1997, Bisk
purchased two BR-D85s and
one BR-D80. Later, Knight
added four BR-D85s and three
BR-D92s. Altogether, Bisk
Education now owns ten D-9
decks and one dockable D-9.
Bisk Education, Inc. has been producing educational
materials for 30 years and today employs 200 people.
The company established a video facility ten years
ago with four people working full-time in the AV
section. Additional work (camera operation, sound
recording, etc.) is contracted out as required.

Superior cost/quality,
less generation loss and
124-minute tape
Before switching to D-9, Bisk
Education used Betacam SP.
Knight was trying to solve the
problem of generation
discontinuity. “The cost/quality
of D-9 is excellent with less
generation loss than DVCPRO.
Now I can keep up with the
original tape.”
Another reason why he chose
D-9 was “the shoot out.”
“124-minute tape capability is
important for our long programs
like interviews and
announcements. We can do
most of the programs with only
a single tape. ”
Knight emphasized the
advantages of D-9. “Anybody
who gets D-9 in their hands,
finds out pretty quickly that the
quality of the video, how the
machine works, its toughness
and simplicity, are great.
Heads seem to last a long time.

7000 hours on
2 decks with
durability

2-inch VTR
Bisk has already logged
7000 hours on each
head. According to
Knight, “I went up to
New Jersey about two
years ago, and learned
how to change the
heads, but I haven’t
done it.” He rated the
D-9’s durability as the
best he’s ever seen.
“Most of the time, with
any other format, it
wouldn’t really be able
to make that difference. It is
really a high definition format as
it stands. It is the highest ever
like an old 2-inch machine.”
He also impressed with the
service and level of support that
JVC has given him.
D-9 makes me
successful
“I figure that it was a good
decision to buy D-9”, said
Knight. “I have been extremely
happy that I’ve been very
successful here. We’ve had
fewer complaints. It’s also
forced all our duplicators to buy
D-9 machines.”
“I want to buy more D-9 all the
time,” said Knight. “We don’t
do too much field stuff any
more, but I still believe in field
type work. I am hoping to buy
three cameras (KY-D29 and
BR-D40) with three CCUs.”
