Suddenly, in 2006 and 2007 it all
changed. New faces attended to the
tournaments and the Dutch viewers were
introduced to the PDC, a new era, different
culture. Major tournaments like the WDT
and IDL stopped after 2007 and there
was no strong organisation to replace
it with other major tournaments, linked
to the PDC. There is still a PDC Players
Championships in Holland, but they are not
as popular as the Players Championships
in Germany. The Dutch crowd did not shift
towards the PDC culture and these events
are far from sold out.
In Germany darts developed in
completely the opposite direction. There
was no history with major tournaments,
World Champions like Raymond van
Barneveld or Jelle Klaasen, and above all,
there was a different crowd culture from the
beginning.
Germany has a clean slate when it comes
to major tournaments, and it all started with
one important ingredient: development.
The GDC, later known as PDC Europe
made a smart move to cooperate with the
PDC and brought darts to Germany in 2007
with a partially televised major and a Players
Championship. From the beginning, it was
about the darts and the participation of the
crowd. The crowd developed within the
culture of the organisation.
Since 2007, darts has become
more popular every year and after the
introduction of the European Order of Merit
in 2009 the sport developed to greater
heights.
The European Order of Merit gave
German players a better chance to compete
in the PDC World Darts Championship and
PDC European Championship and with this
players like Andree Welge, Jyhan Artut and
Bernd Roith have come through and added
an extra dimension to the popularity of
darts in Germany.
It is just a matter of time, before one
of the German players picks up a PDC
title. Until that day, the Germans will
continue to enjoy darts without honouring
a German World Champion. That is the
main difference with The Netherlands. A
clean slate, no history, a different culture, no
World Champion, enough room to honour
