Chapter-I<br />

Acid(DBSA) <strong>and</strong> Napthalene Sulph<strong>on</strong>ic Acid(NSA) has resulted in<br />

enhanced c<strong>on</strong>ductivities <strong>and</strong> a weaker temperature dependence of<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ductivity[8-9].This group of doped c<strong>on</strong>ducting <strong><strong>polymer</strong>s</strong> exhibit<br />

a significant positive Temperature Co-efficient of Resistance (TCR)<br />

in the temperature range 160-300K [8-9,29-31].Recently polyaniline<br />

samples prepared using self-stabilised dispersi<strong>on</strong> <strong>polymer</strong>izati<strong>on</strong><br />

[32], are found to have room temperature c<strong>on</strong>ductivities in excess of<br />

lOOOS/cm with a m<strong>on</strong>ot<strong>on</strong>ic decrease in c<strong>on</strong>ductivity from room<br />

temperature to 5K[ 17]. However a lot of work is still left to be d<strong>on</strong>e<br />

in improving the microscopic <strong>and</strong> macroscopic order in these<br />

<strong><strong>polymer</strong>s</strong>.<br />

1.5 Synthesis<br />

Chemical oxidative <strong>polymer</strong>izati<strong>on</strong> [33] is a comm<strong>on</strong> method<br />

employed to synthesise c<strong>on</strong>ducting <strong><strong>polymer</strong>s</strong> in bulk form. Here the<br />

m<strong>on</strong>omer is dissolved in the dopant acid soluti<strong>on</strong> .The oxidant<br />

dissolved in appropriate solvent (water is the comm<strong>on</strong>ly used solvent)<br />

is added dropwise to the mixture with c<strong>on</strong>tinuous stirring for 4-5 hours.<br />

The precipitate obtained is filtered, washed <strong>and</strong> dried. This is <strong>on</strong>e ofthe<br />

easiest methods adopted for synthesizing c<strong>on</strong>ducting <strong><strong>polymer</strong>s</strong> in bulk<br />

form <strong>and</strong> is used to prepare c<strong>on</strong>ducting <strong><strong>polymer</strong>s</strong> such as polyaniline,<br />

polypyrrole etc.
