Preface<br />

Science <strong>and</strong> technology has revoluti<strong>on</strong>ized the modem world.<br />

The progress in the areas of electr<strong>on</strong>ics, computerscience, health care,<br />

communicati<strong>on</strong> engineering <strong>and</strong> informati<strong>on</strong> technology over the last<br />

two decades is amazing. Progress in theoretical as well as experimental<br />

research over the years has sowed the seeds for this abrupt growth. As<br />

far as material science is c<strong>on</strong>cerned, synthesis <strong>and</strong> characterizati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

novel materials with a view <strong>on</strong> device fabricati<strong>on</strong> has flourished.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>ducting <strong><strong>polymer</strong>s</strong> is a fast growing area in materials science<br />

research. Materials <strong>on</strong>ce c<strong>on</strong>sidered as insulators have evolved as<br />

semic<strong>on</strong>ductors or metals. C<strong>on</strong>ducting <strong><strong>polymer</strong>s</strong> are found to have<br />

potential applicati<strong>on</strong>s in the areas ofsensors, electromagnetic shielding,<br />

microelectr<strong>on</strong>ic <strong>and</strong> optoelectr<strong>on</strong>ic devices. They have successfully<br />

replaced metals in many areas owing to their lightness, resistance to<br />

corrosi<strong>on</strong>, low cost <strong>and</strong> ease of fabricati<strong>on</strong>. But unfortunately the<br />

optical <strong>and</strong> thermal properties of such systems have not been focused<br />

much. Such a study is indispensable for the fabricati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

optoelectr<strong>on</strong>ic <strong>and</strong> microelectr<strong>on</strong>ic devices capable ofoperati<strong>on</strong> at high<br />

temperatures.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>ducting <strong>polymer</strong> composites are another area of interest.<br />

Despite having good electrical <strong>and</strong> optical properties, most of the<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ducting <strong><strong>polymer</strong>s</strong> have poor mechanical strength <strong>and</strong> thermal<br />

stability. Making composites with suitable materials is a possible<br />

remedy to this problem. Above all, the properties of c<strong>on</strong>ducting<br />

<strong><strong>polymer</strong>s</strong> could be tailored suitably by preparing composites. It is <strong>on</strong>e<br />

ofthe hot areas in c<strong>on</strong>ducting <strong>polymer</strong> research.
