Chapter-L<br />
Generally there are four different methods for co<strong>polymer</strong>izati<strong>on</strong> [9].<br />
a) Insitu <strong>polymer</strong>izati<strong>on</strong> of both m<strong>on</strong>omers to form a r<strong>and</strong>om<br />
co<strong>polymer</strong><br />
b) Grafting of the solubilizing <strong>polymer</strong> <strong>on</strong>to the backb<strong>on</strong>e of the<br />
insoluble <strong>polymer</strong><br />
c) Grafting of the insoluble <strong>polymer</strong> <strong>on</strong>to the backb<strong>on</strong>e of the<br />
soluble <strong>polymer</strong><br />
d) Combinati<strong>on</strong> ofboth soluble <strong>and</strong> insoluble <strong><strong>polymer</strong>s</strong> to form a<br />
block co<strong>polymer</strong> by various synthetic methods<br />
e) Insitu <strong>polymer</strong>izati<strong>on</strong> of an insoluble <strong>polymer</strong> <strong>on</strong>to the matrix<br />
ofa soluble <strong>polymer</strong>.<br />
Examples include composites of polyaniline <strong>and</strong> polypyrrole<br />
formed by in situ <strong>polymer</strong>izati<strong>on</strong> in matrices such as poly<br />
(vinyl chloride) (PVC), polyvinyla1cohol (PVA), poly<br />
(vinylidinechloride-co-trifluoroethylene) <strong>and</strong> brominated<br />
poly (vinyl carbazole) [37,50].<br />
f) Counteri<strong>on</strong>-induced processibilityofc<strong>on</strong>ducting polyaniline (PANI)<br />
Cao etal [28] have reported that the processibilty of highly<br />
c<strong>on</strong>ducting PANI with reas<strong>on</strong>ably high molecular weight<br />
could be improved by using functi<strong>on</strong>alized prot<strong>on</strong>ic acids.<br />
The functi<strong>on</strong>alized prot<strong>on</strong>ic acid has the form H+(M-R).(M-R)<br />
is the counteri<strong>on</strong> ani<strong>on</strong>ic species. R is the functi<strong>on</strong>al group<br />
chosen to be soluble in n<strong>on</strong>polar or weakly polar organic<br />
solvents. Dodecyl benzene sulf<strong>on</strong>ic acid (DBSA) <strong>and</strong>
