Kevin Stead – illustrator
Kevin Stead’s inspiration for the Small
Pond stamps came from a number of
sources, including real frogs. Said Kevin,
"The biggest challenge in designing the
miniature sheet was placing the various
creatures in an entire scene so they looked
aesthetically pleasing as well as making
them look good individually".
Once he has his material together, Kevin
selects elements such as a leg from one picture,
the head from another and combines
them to form a complete image of the
creature. Kevin then starts sketching …
and keeps on sketching until he gets the
creature looking just right.
Once the individual sketches have been
completed, the scene begins to take life.
Kevin uses gouache (a thick, opaque paint)
to create his life-like colours by first applying
a base colour with an airbrush and then
finishing the details with a hair-fine brush.
From start to finish, the Small Pond
miniature sheet took Kevin six months and
more than 250 pages of sketches to complete.

Western Australia
Thornlie Square Shopping Centre
A range of eye-catching activities and
displays will be on show at the Thornlie
Square Shopping Centre, Thornlie Avenue,
Thornlie from 4 to 8 October inclusive.
Swanpex 99
On 23 and 24 October Swanpex 99 will be
held in the AMTC Building, 140 Royal
Street, East Perth.
South Australia
Congress 99 (Mt Gambier)
Congress 99 will be held at the Old City
Hall, Commercial Street, Mt Gambier from
2 to 3 October. Opening hours are from
10am to 4pm each day. A re-enactment of
the Coach Mail from Casterton will be held
at 10.30am on Sunday 3 October.
Maximum Cards
Salisbury Stamp Fair
The Salisbury Philatelic Society will hold
their annual Stamp Fair during Stamp
Collecting Month at the St Augustine’s
School Hall, 25 Commerical Road,
Salisbury SA from 10am to 4pm on 10
October. Stamp dealers will be in
attendance at the Fair and will hold two
stamp auctions. Raffles, door prizes and
refreshments will also be available.
New South Wales
APTA Centrepoint 99 Stamp & Coin Show
This major Show will be held from 8 to 10
October at the Grand Hall, Centrepoint
Convention and Exhibition Centre, 100
Market Street, Sydney. More than 20
international, interstate and local dealers
will attend and there will also be noncompetitive
exhibits, door prizes, junior
stamp collector activities and much more.
Show hours are from noon to 6pm on
Friday 8 October, 10am to 5pm on
Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.
Queensland
Caboolture Stamp & Coin Fair
The Caboolture Stamp Club will hold it’s
annual Stamp & Coin Fair at the
Caboolture Memorial Hall, Queensland,
on Sunday 24 October. Opening hours are
from 9am to 4pm.
APTA Stamp & Coin Show
The APTA Stamp & Coin Show will be
held at the Brisbane RNA Showgrounds,
Gregory Terrace, Fortitude Valley from 29
to 31 October. Entrance fee is $3.00 for
three days. Opening hours are Friday 29
October from 10am to 6pm, Saturday
from 10am to 5pm, and Sunday from
10am to 4pm.
