ABS 600
MARINE ELASTIC
(formerly ABS 471)
Applications
This material is recommended for ships and oil platforms in areas where the self -
levelling compound is applied as underlay for most types of flooring. ABS 600
satisfies the requirements for deck coverings stipulated by the authorities and the
classification societies. The material is laid in layers of up to 30 mm thick. The
recommended thickness is 2-30 mm. If low weight is required, expanded clay pellets
(Leca) of grain size 2-6 mm can be mixed in. ABS 600 is recommended for
screeding of rust-protected steel deck. It can also be used as a floating slab on
insulation. After mechanical smoothing during laying and subsequent curing, the
material is suitable as a finished subfloor for most floor coverings, like PVC,
linoleum, tiles, floating timber floor, resin floors, etc. The material meets all firetechnical
requirements as a subfloor for most types of floor covering in passenger
vessels and drilling rigs (oil installations offshore) according to IMO Res. A 687
(17).
Product description
ABS 600 is a fibre-reinforced pumpable self-levelling material for steel decks. The
material only requires light mechanical handling with a steel spatula to achieve
adequate evenness for a floor covering. ABS 600 is supplied as dry mix consisting of
special cement, sand, binder, plastic, fibre and additives. Water is added at the site.
The material is suitable for Optiroc's automatic mixing pumps. Grain size < 1 mm.
Work procedure for ABS 600 Marine Elastic
Preparations
The substrate must be clean and free from dust, grease or other contaminant that might reduce adhesion.
Steel plates should be rust-protected. The surface strength of the substrate should not be less than 1.0 MPa.
Prime substrate base with ABS MD 16 diluted with water in proportion 5:1, to be brushed or sprayed on
base. For primer to form a film, the substrate temperature must not be less than 10°C. If laying on
insulation, all joints in the insulation and to adjoining structures must be sealed/taped carefully.
Reinforcement netting # 100 mm, wire grade 4 mm, should be attached soundly with steel clamps on
insulation. Lay netting with approx. 50 mm overlap. To assure good result, ambient temperature should be
between 10 and 25°C. At higher or lower temperatures, curing time will be shorter or longer, respectively.
Mixing
ABS 600 is mixed with 4.3 litres clean water per 25 kg sack (approx 17 %). ABS 600 should be applied by
using a mixer pump approved by Optiroc. It is also possible to mix using a drill and whisk. Mixing must
continue for minimum 2 minutes, allowing mix to attain a lump-free, fluid consistency. At room
temperature the material has an open time of about 10 minutes and can be worked for about 20 minutes.
Do not add more water to already-mixed material. When pumping, check water content with a flow test.
Flow-rate should be between 135 and 145 mm at correct water content. Check also that the material is
correctly mixed and free from separation. ABS 600 can be mixed with loose Leca when low weight of thick
screed layers is required. Mix one bag (approx. 40 litres) Leca, pellets size 2-6 mm, with one 25 kg bag ABS
600. Recommended water volume is 4.3 litres, but can vary slightly depending on moisture content of the
Leca pellets. Consistency should be like "earth moisture". We recommended using a forced mixer for this
mixing operation.
Application
ABS 600 is pumped onto the prepared substrate. When the screed is pumped, the coverage area should not
be wider than 6-8 meters. If the total area is wider, stop-ends must be used. The fresh surface is smoothed
gently with a toothed spatula, to give a perfectly smooth surface. On uneven bases it may be necessary to do
this treatment 10-15 minutes after the material is laid. Be careful to close off drains, holes, cut-outs etc
before laying commences. Material mixed with Leca should be levelled by a straight edge on rails. Then
compact grout gently and smooth with a steel trowel, or similar. If a topping of ABS 600 will be applied
within 2-3 days, there is no need of primer.
Drying time before covering
ABS 600 is ready to be covered 1-3 days after laying. The surface is then sufficiently cured to attach covering
using adhesive. This drying time presumes a good drying climate at about 20°C and 40 % RH and some air
circulation. The surface can be tiled after 4 hours. When laying tiles in wetrooms the screed must be
protected with an approved water proofing material.
Quality assurance
To check that the material was applied according to the supplier's instructions, it is possible to measure the
surface strength. After 28 days curing of the material, the value should be >1MPa. Contact Optiroc for
further details of methods of measurement.
Material consumption
Depends on need for screeding. Normally 1.7 kg/m 2 for 1 mm thick screed.
With Leca mixed in 0,6 kg/m 2 for 1 mm thick screed.
