20 Jan 98 Steven D. Tripp In general, things with developmental histories don't have "definitions" if you mean by definition what we usually mean by definition. What's the definition of France? What's the definition of medicine? What's the definition of jazz? It makes sense to ask what's the definition of a radius or an orbit or an electron, but not IT. Things like France and IT have fuzzy essences. We know what they are because they developed historically from certain ancestors, even though the characteristics of the ancestors may no longer be present. They are best exemplified by best examples. That is why I once called for a "museum" of IT. And why learning IT should be like learning architecture. You learn it by studying the works of the great architects and their methods. Where is the Parthenon and the Falling Water of IT? Who is the Louis Armstrong and Frank Lloyd Wright of IT? These are coherent questions. Asking for a "definition" of IT is not coherent. Steven D.
