asked permission t o do -- to consult with thc schools to lcarn their<br />

needs. Re prepared the budget on the basis of thcse statements, and then<br />

conferred with the Chairman. <strong>The</strong>y had powr to amnd and revise the docu-<br />

ment, after which it went to the Comittet on the Sudgct, to consist of<br />

three mmbcss, and the Treasurer, the Chairman and the Director, ex officio.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Comittec also had power to amend; its recomcndations went to the<br />

i3oard. <strong>The</strong> Committee, announced in January, consisted of EIcssrs. Weed,<br />

In the discussion period, Messrs, Aydclotte and 17cblcn wcre .re-<br />

corded as approving warmly of the proposcd expansion, and the Board as<br />

expressing its gratification <strong>for</strong> the new building. Plans <strong>for</strong> the building<br />

received imediate attention. <strong>The</strong> School of Mathematics was first with<br />

its statement of nceds, presented with considerable thoughtful detail<br />

clevcn days after the Board meeting. <strong>The</strong> statement made two basic assump-<br />

tions: (1) Fine Ilall was to continue to be the center of mathematical<br />

activities <strong>for</strong> the <strong>Institute</strong>; (2) some of its personnel would be in Fuld<br />

Hall. Thus it was said:<br />

<strong>The</strong> mathematicians of the <strong>Institute</strong> are all anxious to contin-<br />

ue and, if possible, to intensify their cooperation with the<br />

mathematicians of Princeton Univcrsity. <strong>The</strong>y consider there-<br />

Eorc that such additional quarters as are provided in Fuld<br />

Hall are to be thought of as extensions of the facilities<br />

available to the matheratics group as a whole. <strong>The</strong>re are<br />

several ways in which such extensions would be valuable.<br />

A number of studies could be offered to professors of the<br />

University, thereby making our relations more reciprocal in<br />

nature. It is obvious that the teaching obligations of mem-<br />

bcrs of tke University staff will lead most of them to prefer<br />

Fine Hall, but it is not inpossible that when Fuld Hall is<br />

actually in existence other considerations may outweigh chis<br />

one. In particular, visiting lecturers, and professors of
