I put in the very first place the development of the School<br />

of Economics and Politics. Thcy were very mc5 pleased with<br />

enormously int~rested in your feeling that Stewart may be 'in<br />

the mood to drop Case Pomeroy and come with us." lf he has<br />

paid his promised visit, let me know whether this subject came<br />

up, and if so, how it stands.9<br />

But Stewart had not paid the promised visit, Riefler would find<br />

out when he would come. ?leanwhile Flexner confided something of his suc-<br />

cess to Mr. Maass; to neither man, hawever, did he mention the new build-<br />

I had a very interesting time with Mr. Barnbergex and Mrs.<br />

Fuld, going over the past and sketching the future develap-<br />

mcnt of the <strong>Institute</strong> as far as it can now be <strong>for</strong>eseen. A<br />

point which I stressed-..was the following: there are cer-<br />

tain fields like mathcmatical physics, and econoinics and<br />

politics, in which, if re can find the men, we are prepared<br />

to advance ROW, but the resources of the <strong>Institute</strong>, -- prin-<br />

ciple and incom -- should be expanded so we will have in<br />

hand money <strong>for</strong> future development and avoid expansion up to<br />

the limit of our income...This was a point 'of view in which<br />

Mr. Bamberger and Mrs, Fuld thoroughly sympathized. I feel<br />

that, if we can find the persons, there will be no doubt about<br />

the £unds.lO<br />

To this Mr. Maass replied:<br />

<strong>The</strong> news...is of tremendous interest. I have always been<br />

confident of their intention ultimately to give us a substan-<br />

tially increased endowment.,.My only concern is that the pro-<br />

gram of expansion be enacted during the period of your m<br />

activities, and this I am most hopeful you will bring about. 11<br />

<strong>The</strong> Director sought to assure himself that the fine accord he<br />

had reached or approached closely with the aged Founders in the delightful<br />

cool and beauty of Murray Bay would remain in their memories, which were<br />

not as retentive as they had been. He wrote them enclosing a draft of a<br />

proposed letter to the Trustees, which evidently reflected their discussions,<br />

and clearly contemplated further gifts from them to endowment. But the<br />

burden was the conservation of those funds, in the interest of keeping the
