<strong>The</strong> next draft submitted by Aydelotte to the Comirtee was<br />

mended to say that the Faculty Trustees had been suggested by the donors.'<br />

:t asserted that the following policies had been worked out by the Direc-<br />

:on, Trustees and Faculty:<br />

1. That the members of the staff should be men and women<br />

capable of creative work of the highest possible excellence<br />

judged not merely by national but by world standards.<br />

2. That the scholars in the <strong>Institute</strong> should enjoy complete<br />

freedm in their work, that there should be no attempt at<br />

planning or regimentation, that they should be left on thefr<br />

own responsibility to do what seem~d best to them in research<br />

and in the directian of the activities of younger men.<br />

3, That in the consideration of men <strong>for</strong> the staff or member-<br />

ship in the <strong>Institute</strong>, no account be taken of race, sex, ar<br />

creed,<br />

4, That while the Trustees have the ultimate legal author-<br />

ity, the actual control of scholarly and educational policies<br />

should be in the hands of the Director and the Faculty.<br />

5, That appointments to the staff of the <strong>Institute</strong> should be<br />

made only with the advice and consent of the Faculty.<br />

6. That the members of the Faculty should have the dignity<br />

and security which comes from adequate salaries and retiring<br />

allawances,<br />

7. That in order to secure cordial and cooperative relations<br />

between Trustees and Faculty, certain members of the Faculty<br />

should, as suggested by the donors, be chosen to becanme mem-<br />

bers of the Board of Trustees.<br />

8. That the <strong>Institute</strong> should not be permanently camnitted .<br />

to any particular field of research, but that different fields<br />

might be cultivated or abandoned from time to time according<br />

to their importance. . .and the men available to represent them.55<br />

<strong>The</strong> Cornittee made changes in the enveloping verbiage, including<br />

Ximination of the fourth paxagraph of Veblen's contribution, which included<br />

he quotation from Flexnex's magazine article.<br />

Two more drafts were prepared by Aydelotte, dated the 2nd Janu-<br />

ry and the 9th April, 1945. <strong>The</strong>re is no evidenthat the Cornnittee
