The second novel in Ken Follett’s epic
Century Trilogy—now in trade paperback!
The Century Trilogy’s five families enter a time of enormous social,
political, and economic turmoil beginning with the rise of the
Third Reich, through the great dramas of World War II, and into the
beginning of the long Cold War.
Carla von Ulrich finds her life engulfed by the Nazi tide, until
she dares to commit a deed of great courage and heartbreak.
American brothers Woody and Chuck Dewar take separate paths
to momentous events—one in Washington, the other in the bloody
jungles of the Pacific. English student Lloyd Williams discovers in
the Spanish Civil War that he must fight Communism just as hard as
Fascism. And Daisy Peshkov, a driven social climber, cares only for
popularity and the fast set, until war transforms her life.
These characters and many others find their lives inextricably
entangled as their experiences illuminate the cataclysms that
marked the century. With passion and the hand of a master, Ken
Follett brings readers into a world they thought they knew but that
will now never seem the same again.
After a string of successful thrillers, Ken Follett surprised everyone with
The Pillars of the Earth and its long-awaited sequel, World Without End, a
national and international bestseller. Follett’s new magnificent historical
epic, The Century Trilogy, opened with the #1 international bestseller
Fall of Giants. He lives in England with his wife. Author websites: kenfollett.com;
Their stories are the the story of America.
The companion to the three-part, six-hour PBS documentary
series Latino Americans chronicles the rich and varied history and
experiences of Latinos, who have helped shape the United States
and have become, with more than 50 million people, the largest
minority group in the U.S.
Broadcast journalist Ray Suarez explores the lives of Latino
American men and women across a four hundred year span,
encompassing an epic range of experiences from the Wild West
to the Cold War; the Great Depression to Globalization; and the
Spanish-American War to the Civil Rights movement.
Ray Suarez is a broadcast journalist and senior correspondent for
He has been host of Talk of the Nation on NPR and a correspondent for
An essential companion to the highlyanticipated
PBS documentary series.
An excerpt from Latino Americans:
This book sets out to tell how numerous peoples, from regions and continents
ung across the globe, came together to become one people….
The Latino Americans come from Europe, Africa, Asia, and from the ancient
nations of this hemisphere. They are the offspring of Spain’s New World Empire.
They arrived in the United States by jet aircraft this morning; they crossed a
dusty, empty stretch of desert just yesterday; or long years after arriving here
to work, they raised a right hand in front of a federal judge and swore to
renounce all other allegiances to any other country. And most importantly,
alongside those whose American story is a recent one are the generations
of Latinos whose families have been in this country far longer than there has
been a place called the United States, even longer than the arrivals from the
British Isles who would go on to invent the United States.
The thrilling, inspiring, untold story of Americans
trapped inside Nazi-occupied Albania.
On the morning of November 8, 1943, at the beginning of World War II, a
group of American medics and nurses stationed in Sicily boarded a
transport plane for a routine mission on the Italian mainland. But in a storm
of clouds over the Adriatic Sea, their plane drifted hundreds of miles off
course, forcing them to crash land in remote, mountainous, Nazi-occupied
Albania. They were stranded without supplies eight hundred and fifty miles
from safety in a country torn apart by rival bands of resistance fighters and
pro-German guerillas.
For sixty days, they evaded Nazi capture with the aid of resistance fighters,
while U.S. and British intelligence scrambled to prepare a rescue plan.
For the first time, Savage Will brings this story of heroism, perseverence,
and Allied solidarity to life.
Roberto Clemente: Baseball great, family
man, humanitarian. Now his family tells the
story of his life and his enduring legacy—for
the fi rst time.
With a swift bat and fi erce athleticism, he intimidated major
league pitchers for eighteen seasons. After a historic World Series
performance with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Roberto Clemente would
forever be grouped with greats like Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron,
Willie Mays, and Mickey Mantle.
But what Roberto Clemente did off the fi eld made him an equally
great man. One of the fi rst athletes who understood how the power
of sports could transform lives, he died while following his passion
for helping others—in a plane crash while transporting supplies to
an earthquake-stricken Nicaragua.
Forty years after that tragic day, his widow and sons open up for the
fi rst time about the husband and father they lost. Featuring rare and
never-before-seen photos, this powerful memoir tells his inspiring
story from the voices who knew him best.
Affectionately called “The Great One,” Roberto Clemente played for the
Pittsburgh Pirates from 1955-1972 and rose to become one of the greatest
players of the game. Off the fi eld, Clemente was involved in charity
work in Puerto Rico and other Latin American countries, often delivering
baseball equipment and food to those in need. He died in an aviation
accident on December 31, 1972. Widow Vera Clemente and sons
Roberto Jr., Luis, and Ricky, who live in Texas and Puerto Rico, continue
to keep Roberto Clemente’s legacy alive. Mike Freeman is a writer for
CBSsports.com. This is his seventh book. He lives in New Jersey.
—26—

The story of a husband, father, athlete, and
humanitarian—told by those who knew and
loved him best. With rare photos!
An excerpt from Clemente:
The 1960 season. It would change everything for Clemente, the city of Pittsburgh, and Puerto Rico.
Pittsburgh would become one of the more stunning champions in the history of baseball, beating the
storied and heavily-favored New York Yankees in the World Series. The Pirates would win twenty-one
of their games that season in the ninth inning, twelve when the team faced two outs.
Clemente was the catalyst. It was Clemente’s 1960 campaign that was the beginning of stunning
performances in huge moments—the true defi nition of greatness. By May, he led the National League
with a .353 batting average and had already thrown out nineteen base runners. Two pivotal moments
occurred during that season, both perfect illustrations of Clemente’s abilities and mental sturdiness.
The fi rst came in a game at Forbes Field against the San Francisco Giants. Willie Mays hit one pitch
down the right fi eld line, the baseball sailing away from Clemente, with Clemente trailing in a fl urry of
The crash led to a cut across Clemente’s jaw, and as he raised his glove to show the catch was made,
the crowd erupted...
The World War I battle that cost almost one
million lives—explored as never before.
Alongside Waterloo and Gettysburg, the Battle of Verdun during the
First World War stands as one of history’s greatest clashes. Yet it is also
one of the most complex and misunderstood, in a war only imperfectly
grasped. Our understanding of Verdun has long been mired in myths,
false assumptions, propaganda, and distortions.
In Verdun, revisionist historian John Mosier proposes a new view,
examining the battle plans and the end goals of both high commands.
Using numerous accounts of military analysts, serving officers, and
eyewitnesses, including French sources that have never been translated,
Mosier offers up a compelling reassessment of the Great War’s most
important battle.
Praise for John Mosier:
The final book in Rachel Caine’s long-running
“addictive”* series!
Something drastic happened in Morganville while Claire and her friends
were away. The town looks cleaner and happier than ever, but when their
incoming group is arrested and separated—vampires from humans—they
realize that the changes definitely aren’t for the better.
An organization called the Daylight Foundation has offered the population
of Morganville something they’ve never had: hope of a vampire-free
future. And while it sounds like salvation, the truth is far more sinister...
A moving memoir of Ben Breedlove—who
inspired millions with his viral videos about his
visions of heaven—written by his sister Ally.
In December 2011, eighteen-year-old Ben Breedlove released a video
on YouTube called “This is my story.” Using flash cards, Ben silently
and powerfully shared with the world what it was like to live with a
life-threatening heart condition and how he had gone to a place of
profound spiritual peace when his heart stopped for three minutes. Ben
asked: “Do you believe in angels or God? I do.”
On Christmas Day, Ben passed away. But he had touched the world with
his story. Over 800,000 people came together online to watch
Ally Breedlove’s heartfelt eulogy for her brother.
In When Will the Heaven Begin? Ally shares Ben’s triumphs, struggles,
amazing spirit, and deep faith—and most importantly, how the brother
she loved found the reality that is God’s peace for us all.
From an award-winning young adult author
comes a touching women’s fiction debut
featuring three sisters who discover that coming
home for the holidays isn’t as easy as it seems…
When the Yancey girls were young, holidays at their hundred-acre family
farm meant a tinsel-garnished tree, the scent of simmering food, and
laughter ringing through the house. But as the years unfolded, family
bonds fractured and, once grown, the three sisters scattered across the
continent and settled into separate lives. Now they’ve been called home
to spend the holiday with their mother—and to bury their father.
Together again for a week in the heartland, old conflicts surface, new
secrets emerge, and the holidays will test the limits and definition of
family for everyone. But a turning point is at hand and the sisters will
finally have to answer the question: when you’re a sister, aren’t you a
sister forever?
Now in paperback, a groundbreaking and
controversial new theory from Ayn Rand’s literary
heir and executor.
In this far-reaching study, Peikoff identifies the three methods people
use to integrate concrete data into a unified system. The first, which
employs reason, he calls Integration. The second uses non-rational
means, which he calls Misintegration. The third is Disintegration—or
nihilism, the desire to tear things apart. Peikoff applies these categories to
the culturally representative fields of literature, physics, education, and
politics, demonstrating how trends in each field have been dominated by
one of these three categories throughout Western history. Extrapolating
from the pattern he identifies, he comes to a shocking conclusion about
the future of the United States.
Cabot Cove has been invaded by Hollywood: One of Jessica’s older
novels is being made into a big-budget movie. The producer has decided
to shoot most of the film on location in town, since the book was loosely
based on a murder that shocked Cabot Cove a few years earlier.
But fiction and reality fatally collide when the actor playing the victim
is murdered—and there’s a cast and crew of possible suspects. With
The “fun and fantastic”* series continues
from the New York Times bestselling
fantasy legend.
Things are looking up for Daisy Johanssen. Life in Pemkowet has
returned to normal, or at least as normal as it gets in a town famous for its
supernatural tourism and presided over by the reclusive Norse goddess
Hel. Daisy’s gained respect in her role as Hel’s enforcer, and she’s dating
Sinclair Palmer, a nice, seemingly normal human guy. Not bad for the
daughter of a minor demon.
Unfortunately, Sinclair’s got a secret, and it’s a big one. He’s descended
from a long line of obeah practitioners—and they want him back.
Regardless of the price Daisy must pay...
The national bestselling author brings his epic
Northland trilogy to a close.
Many generations ago, the Wall was built to hold back the sea, and it
grew into a vast linear city that brought prosperity to Northland. But
now, darkness is falling. Days grow shorter, temperatures colder, and
in the wake of long winters come famine, destruction, and terror. As a
mass exodus to warmer climes threatens to fracture Northland, one man
believes he can outwit the cold—and even salvage some scraps of the
once great civilization. Before interminable gloom settles over the land.
Before the fires of war lay waste to an empire. Before the Ice comes…
One would think that with Jen Lancaster’s
impressive list of bestselling self-improvement
Big Ass; Such a Pretty Fat; Pretty in Plaid; My Fair
Lazy; and Jeneration X—that she would have it
all together by now.
One would be wrong.
Jen’s still a little rough around the edges. Su ce it
to say, she’s no Martha Stewart. And that is exactly
why Jen is going to Martha up and live her life
according to the advice of America’s overachieving
older sister—the woman who turns lemons into
lavender-infused lemonade.
By immersing herself in Martha’s media empire,
Jen will embark on a yearlong quest to take herself,
her house, her husband (and maybe even her pets)
to the next level—from closet organization to craft
making, from party planning to kitchen prep.
Maybe Jen can go four days without giving herself
food poisoning, if she follows Martha’s dictates on
proper storage....Maybe she can grow closer to her
girlfriends by taking up their boring-ass hobbies,
like knitting and sewing....Maybe she can fi nally
rid her workout clothes of meatball stains by using
Martha’s laundry tips....Maybe she can create a
more meaningful anniversary celebration than
just getting drunk in the pool with her husband....
Again. And maybe, just maybe, she’ll discover that
the key to happiness does, in fact, lie in Martha’s
perfectly arranged cupboards and artfully displayed
charcuterie platters.
Johanna Walker is used to taking
who will make her lose control....
I
t has always been up to Johanna to care for her family, particularly her
younger brother, Cole. With an absent father and a useless mother, she’s
been making decisions based on what’s best for Cole for as long as she
can remember. She even determines what men to date by how much they can
provide for her brother and her, not on whatever sparks may—or may not—fly.
But with Cameron MacCabe, the attraction is undeniable. The sexy new bartender
at work gives her butterflies every time she looks at him. And for once,
Jo is tempted to put her needs first. Cam is just as obsessed with getting to
know Jo, but her walls are too solid to let him get close enough to even try.
Then Cam moves into the flat below Jo’s, and their blistering connection becomes
impossible to ignore. Especially since Cam is determined to uncover
all of Jo’s secrets... even if it means taking apart her defenses piece by piece.
“It may seem like I came out of the blue. But my
road was long, windy, full of hurdles, and even some
dead ends. I lost family. I lost friends. I even lost
my way. When I reached what felt like rock bottom,
I realized I had a responsibility to everyone who
believed in me and to kids like me, who just needed
a chance and something to believe in.”
—FROM THE EPILOGUE OF OUT OF THE BLUE
VICTOR CRUZ, the Super Bowl–winning and
record-breaking wide receiver, is best known for his
explosive plays and salsa touchdown celebrations.
While his meteoric rise in the NFL looked like the
result of a magical year, it was actually a lifetime in
the making.
Raised in Paterson, New Jersey’s gritty Fourth
Ward, Cruz overcame numerous setbacks through
hard work, perseverance, and the support of his
loving family—from his grandmother who gave him
his signature dance moves; to his late father, a former
firefighter, who introduced him to football and
taught him how to play; to his hardworking single
mother, who never let him give up in the face of a
challenge. They all helped to keep him on the right
path, as did his coaches, but Cruz’s journey was
never easy. There were family tragedies, academic
struggles, injuries, and more.
In this inspiring, never-before-seen account, Cruz
pays tribute to the people and places that made
him the man he is today, recounts his most defining
moments, and illustrates how his hardships ultimately
unleashed his impenetrable will to win.
Out of the Blue is a candid and moving reflection
of an overlooked and undersized athlete with
an uncommon last name in American football who
was determined to beat the odds and earn his
chance to succeed.
handbooks for professional and
individual investors alike, designed for
practical use in today’s fast-paced and
volatile market.
This series of guides presents investment vehicles and
strategies from both the issuers’ and the investors’
perspectives. By including only the practical information
that financial professionals require to succeed in today’s
complex markets, these handbooks are concise and yet cover
a vast range of topics. Starting with basic concepts and then
building to state of the art pricing models, strategies, and
tactics, these handbooks will be useful for everyone from
new hires through experienced professionals. Unlike most
books, which are read once and sit on the shelf, investors
will refer to these books repeatedly throughout their careers.
A gorgeous glimpse at a strange world beyond
our imagination...where Christopher Columbus
brought the zombie virus to the New World, the
African Savannah is home to dinosaurs, and one
of the Founding Fathers was a robot.
In Alternate Histories of the World, Matthew Buchholz presents print-
quality vintage photographs and illustrations “enhanced” with images of
monsters, robots, zombies, UFOs, and other mythical elements. Along
with the stunning images, wry commentary makes this a totally new and
fantastical take on what we thought we already knew.
“Buchholz imagines the past a little differently...he sees redcoats and
steamboats, galleons and waistcoats, but he also sees monsters at the
Battle of Bunker Hill and UFOs fueling the Great Chicago fire.”
A unique collection of the inspiring “little things”
that no one should ever forget.
Three years ago, a man sat in a taxi, stuck in traffic, and listened while his
grouchy cab driver complained about life. Every aspect of life. After thirty
minutes or so, the man took out a sticky note and a pen, and scribbled
the words “Never give up.” He left it on the seat of the cab for the next
passenger. And that was the start of Things We Forget.
Every day since then, J.J. Penn has written a simple yet inspiring reminder
on a sticky note and anonymously posted it somewhere in public—on
a park bench, at a bus stop—with the intent of spreading a little hope
and brightening someone’s day. Now, in this upbeat and inspiring book,
readers can experience the little notes that have captivated so many
people all around the world.
Now in paperback: A top expert offers a new
view of autism spectrum disorders—including
the latest findings on prevention and treatment.
The question Dr. Robert Melillo is asked over and over again is: Why?
Why is this happening? Why did it happen to my child? What can we
do about it as a society—and what can I do to help my child? In this
candid, practical, and research-based book, Dr. Melillo presents the
latest, scientific explanation for how we got here, and proven, drug-
free strategies that parents with autistic children can employ. With
honesty and compassion, he covers the role of environmental, genetic,
and lifestyle factors, dispelling myths about autism and replacing them
with scientific evidence. In addition, he presents early warning signs,
a prevention plan for parents-to-be, and an intervention program for
babies and children who have already been diagnosed.
A prize-winning literary thriller full of danger,
deceit, and a daughter’s desperate bid
for revenge.
A car tumbles through darkness down a snowy ravine. A woman walks
out of a dust storm in sub-Saharan Africa. And in the seething heat of
Lagos City, a criminal cartel scours the Internet, looking for victims. Lives
intersect. Worlds collide. And it all begins with a single email: “Dear Sir,
I am the daughter of a Nigerian diplomat, and I need your help…”
When Laura Curtis, a lonely editor in a cold northern city, discovers that
her father has died because of such a swindle, she sets out to track down
her father’s killer. It is a dangerous game, however, and the stakes are
higher than she can imagine. Woven into Laura’s journey is a mysterious
woman from the African Sahel with scars etched into her skin and a
young man who finds himself caught in a web of violence and deceit.
And running through it, a dying father’s final words: “You, I love.”
“As good a novel about the world in its entirety…as I’ve seen in years,
or will likely see in years to come. It stays with you, it makes you think,
and it hurts.” —New York Times bestselling author Gary Shteyngart
A Brad Shade thriller—the gritty, whip-smart
sequel to The Code—an adrenaline-fueled sports
thriller for fans of Elmore Leonard.
Secrets, blackmail, and murder—a Brad Shade hat trick.
When Brad Shade arrives in Swift Current in the wake of an old friend’s
suicide, all he wants to do is make an appearance at the funeral and get
his own life, especially when his multi-million-dollar business is thriving.
When Shade starts asking questions, he ends up taking a sometimes
violent detour through the dark side of a small prairie town that has no
shortage of secrets it wants kept at almost any cost.
The second in the Brad Shade series, The Black Ace reunites us with the
wisecracking former journeyman hockey player who never played by a
rule he wouldn’t bend or break for a win, who always plays to win, and
who doesn’t know how to leave well enough alone.
Praise for The Code:
“[Joyce’s] knowledgeable, engagingly cynical perspective on hockey
should prove compelling even for those readers with no interest in
the sport.” —Publishers Weekly
