LOS ANGELES — Jonathan Quick
made 19 saves and the defending
National Hockey League champion
Los Angeles Kings defeated Chicago
Blackhawks 3-1 on Tuesday, trimming
the Blackhawks' lead in their play-off
series to 2-1.
The Kings will try to equalise the
best-of-seven Western Conference
inal at two wins each by capturing
game four today before the series
shifts back to Chicago. The winner
plays either Boston or Pittsburgh
for the Stanley Cup. Justin Williams
opened the scoring for the Kings 3:21
into game and Slava Voynov gave Los
Angeles a 2-0 edge just 6:37 into the
second period.
But Chicago's Bryan Bickell slid
a wrap-around goal past Quick with
only 34 seconds remaining in the second
period to pull the Blackhawks
within one goal entering the inal period.
The visitors could not solve Quick
again, however, and Dwight King
scored the clincher for the Kings into
an empty net with 28 seconds remaining
after the Blackhawks had
pulled goaltender Corey Crawford for
an extra attacker.
The Kings were in danger of falling
behind 3-0 after dropping the irst
two games in Chicago, but Williams
said the team was relaxed despite the
importance of a victory.
"I don't think we were too uptight
said Williams. "We created pressure,
McIlroy gets help ahead of US Open
ROCHESTER, New York — World No
2 Rory McIlroy is off to Merion for
two US Open practice rounds this
week after a talk with coach Dave
Stockton to try and help his golf game
before next week's major showdown.
The 24-year-old from Northern
Ireland, who won his irst Major title
at the 2011 US Open, spoke at Oak
Hill, where he will defend his most
recent major triumph at the 95th PGA
Championship in August.
"It is the strongest ield in golf and
it's great to be able to come out on
top in a ield like that," said McIlroy,
who won last year's PGA crown at
Kiawah Island.
McIlroy will play practice rounds
at Merion as he tries to ine tune a
game that has seen him produce four
top-10 showings in US PGA events,
including a second at the Texas
Open, but only a share of 25th at the
Masters and 57th last week at the
Memorial. "I'm playing pretty well. I
need it all to click into place and once
I do that, I'll be off and running," McIlroy
said. "All parts of my game are
there. I just need to sort of put them
all together for one week.
"I'm feeling good. I'm looking forward
to seeing Merion. So it's just
about getting to know the course
there and being as comfortable with
it as you can. "I'm hoping that my sort
of trend in the US Open continues, because
I went miss cut, win, missed the
cut, so hopefully I can win again."
McIlroy spent time with coach
Dave Stockton at Memorial last week.
"Dave Stockton was at Memorial
for a couple of days, trying to get me
to hole some more putts," McIlroy
said. "The ball striking has not really
been an issue this year. I've actu-
ally hit the ball pretty well from tee
to green, and I've given myself a lot
of opportunities, but didn't take as
many as I should have.
"If I keep hitting the ball the way I
know I can and hole putts, I'll hopefully
be in the winner's circle."
"We had more time in the offensive
zone and we were able to do more
things." The Kings improved to 8-0
at home in the playoffs with Quick's
third home shutout of the playoffs.
"We had to worry about tonight
not what happened before," Kings
defenceman Matt Greene said. "The
goals will come. They may be ugly and
we'll be grinding but they will come.
"Now we have got to get another
win. We have got to go back to their
building even."
A physical contest was punctuated
when Chicago defenseman Duncan
Keith struck the Kings' Jeff Carter in
the face with a one-handed high stick
swing, opening a cut on Carter's chin
and drawing four minutes in the penalty
box. "It was an accident," Keith
said. "I wanted to give him a tap. I feel
bad where I got him. I'm glad he came
Gatlin eyes
showdown
with Bolt
ROME — America's 2004 Olympic
champion Justin Gatlin is eyeing a
stellar 100m showdown with sprint
king Usain Bolt today as the perfect
catapult along the road to August's
World Athletics Championships.
The 31-year-old, whose career
was interrupted by a four-year doping
ban, timed 9.97sec when winning
the irst Diamond League meet
of the season in Doha in May and
then 9.88sec to top the podium in
Eugene last weekend.
However, the 100m ields were
missing Olympic champion and
world-record holder Bolt as well as
world champion Yohan Blake.
Gatlin, who was the bronze medallist
at the London Olympics, said
he relished running against the Jamaican
duo and the world's other
top sprinters.
"I like racing the top guys. You
get a sense of your opponent's race
strategy. I'd love to race Yohan and
Tyson (Gay) more often," Gatlin said.
"If we go out there and put together
a good race, Rome is going to be
the catapult that throws everything
forward in excitement to the world
championships."
Gatlin said it was a privilege to
race against Bolt, a six-time Olympic
Red Sox rout Rangers, Tigers triumph
BOSTON — Boston's offense exploded
for their highest scoring day
of the season, the Red Sox pounding
the Texas Rangers 17-5 in the MLB on
Tuesday. The Red Sox (36-23) scored
eight runs in the irst two innings to
chase Texas starter Justin Grimm
from the mound, and smashed four
home runs and 19 hits to win their
third consecutive game.
Mike Carp had three hits and three
RBIs while David Ortiz also inished
with three RBIs for the American
League East leading Red Sox.
AL Central leaders Detroit handed
Tampa Bay starter Matt Moore his
irst loss of the season, the Tigers
routing the visiting Rays 10-1.
Moore got into trouble early and
failed to make it out of the third inning.
He was charged with six runs
and gave up six walks. The loss
dropped him to 8-1. "Somewhere in
the second inning I lost my feel for
my release point," Moore told reporters.
"Six walks. You can't defend the
walks, they're inexcusable." Anibal
Sanchez cruised to his sixth win for
the Tigers by striking out nine and allowing
just one run in seven innings.
3-for-4 with four RBIs while Miguel
MIAMI — When LeBron James and
Chris Bosh joined the Miami Heat in
2010, teaming up with Dwyane Wade
to form the 'Big Three', James famously
promised "not one, not two, not
three" NBA championships.
It was a boast that was mocked
and criticised in equal measure as
traditionalists winced at the sight of
the two free agents celebrating their
own arrivals in a pop concert style
James continued that promise, at
the glitzy event, even getting as far
as "not seven" as he emphasised the
need for multiple titles.
last year.
This year they brought the normally
routine regular season to life with a
remarkable 27 game winning streak
— the second longest in NBA history.
Now, after seeing off the Milwaukee
Bucks (4-0), the Chicago Bulls (4-1)
and the Indiana Pacers (4-3), the Heat
are up against the hugely experienced
San Antonio Spurs.
If the series end in defeat for Miami,
