Youth Work Curriculum
Statement
CORE VALUES
Promotion of equality &
diversity; challenging all
forms of oppression &
prejudice.
Young People are
partners in the learning
and decision making
process.
Available to all young
people, aged 13 -19, as
their right; and
specialised work with
targeted young people
aged 11 - 12 & 20+.
Participation is based on
voluntary relationships.
WHAT DO WE
DELIVER?
Youth workers develop
programmes with young
people, which are educative
and promote equality of
opportunity; are participative
and empowering; and are fun,
challenging and exciting.
A framework for participation in area
focus groups; opportunities &
support to be involved in both the
application for, and assessment of,
YOF and YCF; and encouragement to
contribute to the Youth Service Plan.
CONTEXT
The curriculum is
linked to the 5 ECM
criteria
Enjoying and
achieving – getting the
most out of life and
having their
progress recognised.
Economic Well-Being –
being included and
realising potential.
Young people who engage with the youth
service are encouraged to express views and
opinions, and participate in decision-making and
in the governance of the Youth Service. This
process begins at project level and can be
achieved through a Young People’s committee,
shared planning and evaluating of the
programme, or informal discussions.
Making a positive
contribution – being
involved with
community & society.
Through its high quality
programmes and activities,
designed with young people,
the Youth Service creates
opportunities for personal
and social development. This
empowers young people to
take control of their lives &
the changes that positively
affect their progress.
Being Safe – protection
from harm and neglect.
Being Healthy – keeping young
people in good shape.
Informal educational
opportunities, using a
flexible approach.
DO WE OFFER
Peer Education
Team games
Music & Drama
We encourage young people to consider
the progress they make, as a result of
their involvement with our service, & we
record these outcomes. They are then
supported to acknowledge their
achievements, using a variety of
nationally recognised methods of
accreditation. In support of this process,
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Youth
Achievement Award are centrally
supported; with many young people
choosing to train as Youth Workers.
ARE ALL THE
PROJECTS THE
SAME?
Young people are encouraged to
influence the type of provision
ASSESSMENT
All units are expected to achieve
Investing in Children Status and the
Healthy Youth Work Standard.
The 10 Year Strategy is at the centre
of future plans for our service.
NO - some are established to support young
people because of their circumstances eg
disability, social exclusion, gender; others
are set up to allow young people to access
particular aspects of the
curriculum eg drama, dance; health and
sport; but all our provision is flexible and
responsive to the needs of the young people
who access it.
