Jubilee <strong>2000</strong>:<br />

Celebrating the Millennium<br />

In conjunction with the Catholic Church, <strong>Seton</strong> <strong>Hall</strong> <strong>University</strong> has chosen the theme of “Jubilee <strong>2000</strong>”<br />

to commemorate the arrival of the third millennium. Aimed at the spirit of renewal, the theme is rooted<br />

in the Old Testament.<br />

During the time of the Israelites, every seventh year, like every seventh day,<br />

was regarded as holy and set aside for rest. Every 50th year (the year<br />

that followed seven complete cycles of seven years), the year of<br />

jubilee was observed as a sabbatical year of special solemnity —<br />

a time of joy and a year of remission or universal pardon. As the year<br />

<strong>2000</strong> is a year of jubilee, the Catholic Church and the <strong>University</strong><br />

chose to focus their millennium celebrations around this tradition<br />

in order to promote personal renewal and a strengthened<br />

relationship with the Church.<br />

According to Monsignor William C. Harms, D.Min., vice president<br />

for planning and chair of the <strong>University</strong>’s Millennium Committee,<br />

“In choosing to adopt this theme, the Millennium Committee realized<br />

that our <strong>University</strong> is made up of individuals with diverse beliefs.<br />

Though rooted in the Catholic Church, we feel the Jubilee <strong>2000</strong> theme<br />

represents a universal challenge to our community to enter this new century<br />

by rediscovering love, hope and faith.”<br />

Poetry-in-the-Round and Primavera Italiana<br />

present Jonathan Galassi, president of the Academy<br />

of American Poets and editor-in-chief of Farrar,<br />

Straus & Giroux, reading from his recent translation<br />

of the works of the Nobel Prize-winning Italian poet<br />

Eugenio Montale. The event is jointly sponsored<br />

by the Joseph M. and Geraldine C. La Motta<br />
