Happy New Year! 

Economically 2008 was one of the worst years on record. The banking industry fell apart, loans 

to keep businesses and households operating were nowhere to be found and many citizens saw a 

substantial share of their net worth disappear through an avalanche on Wall Street. Locally, more than 

a few businesses had to close their doors. But in the middle of all that, several new businesses opened 

in Kingston and a few more are planned for early in the fi rst quarter. The past is done. What we have is 

today and the future. 

Now it is 2009, we are nearing the end of the fi rst decade of the 21st century. Where do we go from 

here? We live in one of the best examples of “Small Town America.” Kingston is a beautiful place and 

whether the sun is shining brightly on our cove or the cold north wind is blowing rain sideways, or 

it is so foggy out that you can’t see the end of the breakwater and the ferry’s fog horn wakes you up 

before your alarm goes off, most of us are here because we really like something about the place. 

A cup of coffee is never hard to fi nd. A trip to the post offi ce is a social event. Stop anywhere for a 

moment or two and you will fi nd yourself visiting with someone about something. Yes, economically 

we are hurting, but inside we are strong and our heart is in great shape. Let’s hope that the bottom has 

been reached and we are on our way to recovery. 

How can we get the momentum up and keep it running? My answer to that is we have to support 

our local economy. We are in a unique situation because a substantial portion of the money available 

to be spent locally is earned either across the sound or in the southern end of the county. Once those 

dollars are brought to the community, and hopefully placed in a local bank, we need to make sure that 

they are working very hard for the community. With a conscious effort concentrating on buying goods 

and services from Kingston businesses we can keep our little economy alive and help it grow. 

If everyone takes a minute or two to consciously consider where they are going to purchase that 

next item or service and make every effort to try to buy locally, then our fragile economy will begin to 

grow. The re-spending of local money is one of the most fascinating factors in all economic theories. 

I used to have a sticker that went out on overdue statements that said “Please pay me so I can pay 

him so he can pay her so she can pay her employees so they can buy something from you.” It is kind 

of funny but it is true that when one of the payees in that statement is located outside of the local 

economic community, then the chain is broken and that money is gone to be re-spent somewhere else. 

That’s why I support buying locally. 

In 2008, I sold my business of nearly 16 years. It started as a one-man, basement enterprise and 

when I left, there were 11 people employed in a 4,000 square foot facility, and we had three vehicles 

on the road delivering goods and services every day throughout the Puget Sound region. At the end of 

last year, no one had ever been laid off. I am proud to have been a part of that and I was happy to turn 

the operation over to the next generation of ownership. I wish them every success. 

I bring this up because people have asked me “Why be president of the chamber – didn’t you 

retire?” I am doing this because I really enjoy being a member of this community. I want to help the 

existing businesses in town stay alive and viable. I want to help attract new businesses to our town. I 

want to see some of our empty commercial spaces occupied with viable 

enterprises. I want to see the community continue to come together in 

support of logical and sensible growth. I want to see graduates of our 

new high school come back after college and fi nd that their hometown 

is a great place to start a business. I want to convince people that 

just about everything they might need can be purchased right here in 

Kingston. 

Let’s all work together and have a great and successful 2009.

Our mission as a Chamber is to encourage and promote 

the interests of the business community by defining, 

developing and implementing programs and services which 

enhance economic activity and the quality of life for the 

greater Kingston community. 

The direction of the Chamber is derived from the mission 

statement, the strength from its membership, and the 

progress from its committees.

Purpose of the Chamber 

The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce is an 

association of the business people who act to improve our 

community. The Chamber is an independent, nonprofit 

corporation run by its members through an elected board 

of directors. The Chamber draws strength from attracting 

participating businesses into membership. The Chamber 

organizes and directs the energy, talent and money 

contributed by the members into projects which improve 

the business climate in our community. 

The Chamber also makes contributions to our community 

for the benefit of all citizens. It is the profitable operation 

of business that provides jobs and produces the wealth 

to finance government, education, cultural and charitable 

programs which address the needs of our community. 

What Does the Chamber Do? 

The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce supports 

the business activities of its members through promotion, 

advertising, networking and participation in community 

events such as the Kingston 4th of July celebration. 

The Chamber provides tourism and relocation 

information to people visiting or moving to our area. 

The Chamber works with other local Chambers of 

Commerce, the Kitsap Peninsula Visitor and Convention 

Bureau, and other groups and agencies to accomplish 

its mission. 

The Chamber provides its members a voice in 

community and governmental activities.

Member Benefits 

The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce: 

1. Promotes the area as a good place to do business, make 

a home or to visit. 

2. Informs, attracts and supports the business needs of 

the community. 

3. Networks with the area and state Economic 

Development Councils to encourage appropriate 

businesses to locate in our area. 

4. Produces a monthly newsletter by and for Chamber 

members. 

5. Produces visitor information provided locally and in 

other sources of tourism. 

6. Assists in marketing and promotion of Kingston 

businesses and events. 

7. Offers its members insurance (health, dental, vision, life, 

disability and long-term care) through Carney Cargill Inc. 

8. Meets monthly through luncheons and “After Hours 

Networking” events. 

9. Maintains a Web site with a directory of all members 

and detailed information about events and activities 

in Kingston. Businesses can “Spotlight” their information 

and events. There are links to other sites of interest to 

members, the community and visitors. 

10. Provides a weekly e-mail broadcast to members which 

is available to highlight community and member 

business events. 

11. Is a hub for community groups which promote and 

advance the quality of life in Kingston including:

Kingston 

It’s a crystal clear, windy day 

as the ferry from Edmonds slowly turns west toward 

the tree covered hill dotted with houses that look 

down upon Apple Tree Cove and this great town of 

Kingston. The seagulls over the marina call out their 

welcome as the ship slowly pulls into dock bursting 

with tourists and locals, waiting to drive or walk up 

into town, some staying to shop, eat and visit, others 

busy to move on through to other places, to do other 

things on the peninsula and beyond. 

This is the feeling of Kingston – lush green forests 

harboring homes and barns, boats in the marina, 

shops, restaurants, pubs and art galleries. A bustling 

little down by Apple Tree Cove that’s home to 4,700 

people. 

Originally platted in the 1850s as vacation 

property for investors from Seattle, Kingston boasts a 

rich history of industries and people. Often thought 

that Kingston was once a logging town, local 

historians will correct that a logging company only lasted 

six months in the 1800s, down on the waterfront. Leaving 

the lumber mill business to, what was once, Pope and 

Talbot up in Port Gamble, Kingston residents enjoy a quiet, 

seaside lifestyle within minutes of all essential needs that 

could be found elsewhere in Kitsap County. 


In addition to life by the sea, and on the farm, Kingston 

is home to businesses of many varieties. In addition to retail, 

banking and real estate, many businesses come to Kingston 

for its location, as it is easily accessible from Seattle-side 

cities as well as western ports of call, such Port Townsend 

and Port Angeles. Kingston is home to software, sportswear, 

healthcare, fitness centers, lawyers, garden and hardware 

suppliers and much, much more. 

The Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce is the 

combining force of businesses and community members 

from all over Kitsap County and Washington State. Smaller 

than its neighboring chambers in the cities of Poulsbo and 

Bremerton, and unincorporated Silverdale, the Greater 

Kingston Chamber of Commerce has a colorful history of 

business and community leaders, all with a vision of what 

they want the future of our area to look like. 

The Chamber is an umbrella for many committees, all 

with a vision and a purpose. One of these committees, the 

Kingston Revitalization Association, claims responsibility 

for the purchase and maintenance of the 150 beautiful 

flower baskets lining our main streets, as well as the 

creation and organization of popular Kingston events such 

as Heritage Day in September and the Kingston Country 

Christmas in December. 

The Downtown Kingston Association is another group of 

involved community members focusing its efforts on events 

bringing people into our area from far and wide. The mixed 

bag of DKA events includes Paddle Kitsap, which brought in 

kayakers from all over the area who stayed for the weekend 

and boosted local economy. Another DKA achievement is the 

Kingston Concerts on the Cove which take place on Saturday 

nights during the month of August at the Mike Wallace Park 

by the marina. In collaboration with the Kingston/North 

Kitsap Rotary, which jointly with the Port of Kingston, is 

responsible for Kingston’s first ever Beer/Wine Garden on the 

concert site, the concerts attracted families from far and wide. 


Other committees do other things. The Kingston 4th of 

July Celebration is an organization that was formed to be 

responsible for Kingston’s July 4th events which include the 

largest parade in the area, Tiny Town (a children’s theme 

grounds with crafts and food and air-filled rides), and the 

amazing fireworks show, which lasts longer than the shows 

across Elliott Bay in Seattle. Thousands of people make 

Kingston their destination for these very special events. 


Port Gamble 

Port Gamble is a slice of New England in Kitsap County and being 

there is like stepping back into time long ago. Built in a style similar to the East Coast towns that 

were home to the town’s founders, Port Gamble is a jewel on the Kitsap Peninsula. Port Gamble 

is a privately owned National Historic Landmark District. 

Port Gamble is set along the scenic shores of Hood Canal, a mile east of the floating bridge 

on Highway 104, or eight miles west of the Kingston Ferry terminal. 

The 120-acre site was founded in 1853 by Puget Mill Company (later renamed Pope & 

Talbot) as a home for mill workers and their families. It was the oldest continuously operating 

mill town in North America until the mill ceased operations in 1995. 

The town is a popular day trip, wedding 

destination, and meeting and event venue. It is also 

a great destination for residents of neighboring 

Jefferson, King and Snohomish counties, especially 

during the summer when special events take place 

every weekend, from a medieval fair to a Civil War 

reenactment. Other events include ghost walks, 

historic walking tours, the annual fruitcake contest 

and an old-fashioned Country Christmas, which 

help the town draw visitors year around. Boutiques 

offer local and regional fine arts, antiques, books, 

espresso, spa treatments, high tea and of course the 

feel of an old general store. 

The New England style town features turn-ofthe-century 

buildings, a historic church, picturesque 

grounds and a historic museum filled with artifacts and 

replicas from the town’s mill days. Elms and maples line 

the town’s streets -- painting the area with hues of gold, 

orange and red in the autumn. 

Port Gamble has retained its historic charm and 

character; and remains company owned, now by 

Olympic Property Group, a division of Pope Resources. 


The company plans to further develop Port 

Gamble and its environs, including Babcock 

Farm, acquired last year. Eventually, the 

farm may get back to producing organic 

vegetables and flowers for sale to residents 

and at the outdoor market. Possibilities also 

include a brewery, winery and college, all 

contributing to an enriched future and solid 

economic base with the past playing a part. 

Olympic Property Group, besides 

re-visioning the town, is taking the lead 

on a trail network. It is called “The String of 

Pearls” and will be connecting trails in and 

around Port Gamble and other properties 

the company owns with similar trails 

joining North Kitsap communities. With the 

help of a huge team of representatives from 

the community and recreation members 

throughout the county, it is no doubt the 

String of Pearls will become another North 

Kitsap gem.

Port Gamble 


Hansville 

Located at the northernmost tip of the Kitsap Peninsula is the town of 

Hansville, Washington. Just ten miles from Kingston, Hansville is home to the Point No Point Lighthouse, a Nature 

Conservancy Reserve, three county parks and an extensive forest and beach trail system. 

Originally, the area was referred to as Point No Point. In 1841 Commander Charles Wilkes of the US Exploring 

Expedition came upon a sandy spit, thinking it a point of land. Upon closer inspection, the spit was much smaller 

than it looked and there was no “point” to speak of. He named it Point No Point. The S’Klallam Tribe called the spit 

of land Hahdskus, translating to “Long Nose”. As Seattle and Tacoma grew and marine traffic increased, so did the 

occurrence of marine calamities, making it necessary to construct light stations along Admiralty Inlet and Puget 

Sound. In 1879 construction was begun on the Point No Point Lighthouse and on January 1, 1880 it officially 

went into service. However, the lens for the light hadn’t yet arrived so the first light keeper, Mr. J.S. Maggs, hung a 

kerosene lantern in the tower and lit the way for ships until the lens arrived. 

About the same time, the area started to 

see the arrival of settlers, mostly Norwegian, 

Swedish, and Finnish immigrants. Upon their 

arrival they began fishing, farming and logging. 

Two such settlers were Norwegians Hans 

Zachariasen and Anton Husby. Hans and Anton 

were fishermen and would catch herring and sell 

it as bait to the commercial fishermen heading 

out to the fishing grounds in the Strait and 

beyond. They also ran a ferry service with their 

boats, from the steamers offshore to the beach, 

there being no dock built yet. As legend has it, 

Anton was a temperate man who would refuse 

to ferry anyone who had been imbibing. Upon 

learning that, one Scandinavian man remarked 

to his friend “Vell, how vill dey get ashore if Anton 

von’t ferry dem? “ “Oh don’t vorry”, said the friend, 

“If Anton von’t, Hans vill.” And thus the town is 

called Hansville. 

In the late 1920s and early1930s people began 

to buy land on the waterfront and build summer 

cabins and fishing resorts. Point No Point was a 

premier salmon fishing destination with as many 

as seven resorts at one time lining the beach. 

Vestiges of long docks and rails to the water still 

can be seen at low tide. 


Today, Hansville’s population of about 2000 consists of 

descendants of those early farmers, fishermen, loggers, 

and resort owners, in addition to a diverse population 

of community minded residents committed to keeping 

Hansville a beautiful, rural place to live, work and play. 

The small town offers visitors a general store, post 

office, church, and B and Bs. The lighthouse is located at 

Point No Point County Park and 

is open for tours from April 

through September. The US 

Lighthouse Society recently 

relocated its headquarters from 

San Francisco to one of the 

dwellings at the lighthouse. 

For lighthouse buffs, there is an 

abundance of information to 

be found there. The park also 

contains a large wetland area 

with excellent birding, a quiet 

one-half-mile walk from the 

beach through a forested path, 

and the boathouse, cabins and 

dock from the old Point No 

Point Resort. During salmon season, dozens of boats and 

scores of people fishing from shore still try their luck. 

Just north of the lighthouse in “downtown” Hansville is the 

newly acquired Norwegian Point Park, named for those who 

settled the area. This park also retains the old resort cabins, 

boathouse and dock from the early 30s. Plans are under way 

to place the boathouse on the National Historic Registry. 

Hansville 

A couple of miles southwest is Buck Lake County Park. 

The small lake is a popular swimming and picnicking area 

in the summer. Visitors can access the Hansville Greenway 

from here. This trail system through the forest leads past 

beaver dams, bear and coyote habitat, and along an old 

logging railway, affording glimpses of the telltale signs 

of a logging industry long past. A newly acquired section 

of land now allows the 

Greenway to boast a trail 

connecting Puget Sound 

to Hood Canal.

through the woods ends 

at a sandy cove with a 

large marsh area to the 

east and the entrance to 

Hood Canal on the west. 

Here one may see sea 

anemones, sand dollars, 

crabs, porpoise, river otter, osprey, heron and bald eagles. 

Sorry, dogs are not allowed on this walk. 

The community of Hansville is very proactive in its 

approach to population growth and development and 

prides itself on maintaining a rural atmosphere with an 

abundance of natural riches. Enjoy your visit and obey the 

speed limit!

Suquamish, a community located within Kitsap County on the Port 

Madison Indian Reservation just a few miles south of Kingston, is home to the Suquamish tribe, a sovereign nation. 

The name Suquamish originated from the tribe’s winter village site called “d’suq’wub,” which means “place of clear 

water.” Suquamish is easily reached via good roads and is near the Bainbridge Island ferry and Kingston ferry docks. 

In the past Suquamish was a vacation get-away with small weekend fi shing cabins along the waterfront. Today, the 

community is composed of privately owned property and tribal trust property. 

Chief Sealth, a powerful Native American 

leader of the northwest, is buried at the Suquamish 

Memorial Cemetery. The City of Seattle takes its 

name from Chief Sealth. Sealth, a great orator and 

peacekeeper, was instrumental in preserving the 

culture of the Suquamish people during the treaty 

negotiations in the 1850s. To communicate the 

tribe’s concern regarding the relationship between 

its people and the earth, Chief Sealth spoke these 

famous words during the treaty accords: 

“Every part of this country is sacred to my 

people. Every hillside, every valley, every plain and 

grove has been hallowed by some fond memory or 

some sad experience of my Tribe. Even the rocks, 

which seem to lie dumb as they swelter in the sun 

along the silent shore in solemn grandeur thrill with 

memories of past events connected with the fate of 

my people, the very dust under your feet responds 

more lovingly to our footsteps than to yours, 

because it is the ashes of our ancestors, and our bare feet 

are conscious of the sympathetic touch, for the soil is rich 

with the life of our kindred.” 

This historic speech, additional history, and exhibits of 

Suquamish, the Suquamish Tribe, and the Port Madison 

Indian Reservation can be found at the Suquamish 

Museum, 15838 Sandy Hook Road, Poulsbo, WA. 

The community of Suquamish is home to some of 

Kitsap Peninsula’s most eye-catching views. The area looks 

across Puget Sound to the City of Seattle, the Cascade 

Mountain range, and south to Mt. Rainier. Nearby, tourists 

can visit Grover’s Creek Fish Hatchery, the Suquamish 

Museum, Old Man House Park, and the gravesite of Chief 

Sealth. In these times, the Suquamish Tribe features the 

Suquamish Clearwater Casino, with “Vegas-style gaming, 

bingo, world-class entertainment.” The casino includes 

four dining options and hosts a waterfront resort. A free 

shuttle operates between the casino and the ferry docks 

at Kingston and Bainbridge. 


Suquamish 

Today, the community of Suquamish continues its respect for the land, 

waters, natural resources and genuine understanding of the relationships 

among these systems. The Suquamish Museum (www.suquamish.nsn.us/ 

museum) is a substantial resource for further information about Suquamish. 

This will be a big year for the Suquamish community, as the town will 

host the Tribal Canoe Journey in July to celebrate the 20th anniversary of 

a one-day pull, which occurred from Suquamish to Seattle to celebrate 

Washington State’s Centennial Year. Since 1993, when the Bella Bella people 

challenged the Canoe Nations to paddle to their shores, the Canoe Journey 

has been an annual event with stops all along the coast. This year, the 

nations will end their 

journey in Suquamish 

with celebrations 

of food and dance, 

music and sharing 

between tribes. 

Weeks later, 

in mid-August, 

Suquamish will once 

again be host to 

Tribal Nations from 

all over the United 

States and Canada 

when it celebrates 

Chief Seattle Days.

EMPLOYMENT & ECONOMY 

As of September 2008, the median household income in Kitsap County 

was $60,719. 

In the Kingston area, according to the 2000 Census, the largest industry 

employers were Educational (North Kitsap School District), health and 

social services, followed closely by professional, scientific, management, 

administrative and waste management services. Retail trade, followed 

by construction, manufacturing and then public administration were the 

next three levels of industry that employed the largest number of people 

in the area. 

Most people drive to work, alone, and the overall mean travel time to 

work is 42 minutes, indicating that they travel outside of the county to 

their workplace. 

HOUSING & REAL ESTATE 

Most of the housing in North Kitsap are single-family homes both on 

homesteads and in housing developments. Apartment and condominium 

complexes are few but can be found in downtown Kingston. The average 

cost of a home in North Kitsap is $350,000, considering all properties with 

waterfront or water and/or mountain views. 

CLIMATE & GEOGRAPHY 

Kitsap County has 283 miles of saltwater front, formed by bays and 

inlets, around Hood Canal, Dyes Inlet, Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan 

de Fuca. Kitsap County comprises a total landmass of 393 square miles. 

Kingston’s weather is influenced by the same air currents that affect 

our water neighbors in the Edmonds, Everett and North Seattle areas. 

The peninsula’s annual weather is seasonal sun, rain and snow. Spring 

begins in late February or early March, with summer heat averaging in the 

upper 70s. Humidity levels are considerably low. Rain averages 25 inches 

per year, and intermittent winter snows average 4 to 12 inches (varying 

between sub climates throughout Kitsap County), lasting from one to four 

days during the winter making this region’s winter weather relatively mild 

with a temperature average in the 30s and 40s.

RECREATION & LEISURE 

There is much to do and see in Kingston and surrounding areas, much 

of which can be outside all year-round. As the Kitsap Peninsula is almost 

entirely surrounded by water, boating and water activities are prevalent in 

the lives of many of the locals. From beach combing, clamming, crabbing 

and fishing, to recreational and commercial boating, life on the water is a 

big part of our lives. 

In addition to life by the water, the vast number of trails through the forests 

of North Kitsap allow for hiking, biking and horseback riding from one end to 

the other. Camping areas can be found at Kitsap Memorial State Park. 

For those who prefer to stay warm and dry, the greater Kingston area offers 

art galleries a second-hand book store, antique shops, museums, light houses, 

cafes and restaurants to meet the standards of every palate. In February, 

Kingston will be home to the Firehouse Theatre and Restaurant: an independent 

film theatre with a live performance stage and a full-service restaurant 

with an outside south-facing patio.

In Appletree Cove adjacent to Washington State Ferry Terminal and downtown 

Kingston. Fuel dock, gas, diesel, gift shop and provisions. The port offers 

275 slips for permanent moorage and 40 transient stalls. Included in 

the 11-acre area is a large marina park with barbecue facilities, maximized 

parking for cars and trailers. The local Kingston Cove Yacht Club building 

is available for rent for functions. It is close to shops and restaurants in 

Kingston. 

Salisbury Point Launch 

Just around the corner, west of Port Gamble, between the town and the 

Hood Canal Bridge off Hwy. 104. A Kitsap County Park with substantial parking, 

and a steep wide ramp. Offers excellent access to northern Hood Canal, 

but can be difficult on windy days. 

Suquamish Launch 

The launch is located on south side of Suquamish at the north end.
