Chairman’s Message
Within the next month, the spring trial season will be
behind us, and we will be able to look forward to a break
before the fall season and the 2009 national field events.
Plans are well under way for those festivities, and we
hope to see many of you in Maryland and Pennsylvania
come October. The latest details, including premium lists
and order forms, will be posted to the DCA 2009 website
as they become available. We have included trophy and
sponsorship information in this Voice issue, however, for
your convenience. Please note that sponsorship levels
have been increased this year to offset rising expenses.
One interesting consequence of holding the national
specialty in the fall has been the decision to move the
DCA Annual Trial to the spring in order to avoid a conflict
with the national events. Oftentimes, there seems to be
much confusion about the origins and traditions of this
particular trial, so it is perhaps fitting that we have an
article in this issue that will hopefully clarify the
significance of the Annual and a few of the other notable
yearly Dachshund field trial events.
In many of the northern areas of the country, summer is earthdoggin’ time and we
can all look forward to some excitement “below.” In the southern climates,
summer is the time to pause and reflect … and plan for the cooler weather ahead.
May you all have success and enjoyment in the next few months wherever you are
… we’ll be back with more information this summer!
Date Change for 2009 DCA Annual and DCNJ Field Trials
The DCA Annual field trial and the associated DCNJ trial are normally held in late fall each year.
Given that the 2009 DCA National Specialty events are slated for mid to late October, however, the
Annual weekend has been pushed forward to May 9 th and 10 th at the Central Jersey Beagle Club in
Sergeantsville, NJ.
2008 AKC Title Statistics
AKC recently published its “Annual Statistics” report. In 2008, Dachshunds earned:
37 Dual Championships
90 Field Championships
1 Champion Tracker (CT) title
4 Master Earthdog titles
22 Senior Earthdog titles
54 Junior Earthdog titles
2 Tracking Dog Excellent titles
11 Tracking Dog titles
Congratulations to the hard-working dogs and handlers behind these numbers!
Judges Affirmation Process
In late March, AKC’s Performance Events Department published a memorandum which stated that
clubs would no longer be required to submit judges affirmation forms with event results. Nor will
affirmation forms be supplied in the “event kit” mailed to future test and trial secretaries.
New performance judges will be supplied with an affirmation form during AKC field trial and
SPRING 2009 5 of 23
earthdog seminars. A prospective judge will have to be complete the form and submitted to AKC
along with their judge’s application before he /she can be approved for their first assignment.
Field Trial Premium Lists vs. Flyers
Chapter 6 of the Dachshund field trial regulations does not explicitly state that copies of a club’s
premium list need to be sent to AKC as is usually the case with AKC member and licensed events.
This fact has been inferred to imply that Dachshund clubs do not need to publish and distribute
premium lists for their field trial events. That is not true, however, according to both Doug
Ljungren, AKC Assistant Vice President for Performance Events, and Mel Stewart, Field Director of
Hounds. Both gentlemen contend that all AKC events should conform to the standard policy
regarding premium lists.
Given these statements, it would be advisable for all clubs to publish a premium list in the future
rather than a “flyer”. This should not be too onerous as the chief difference between a flyer and a
premium list is the inclusion of an official AKC entry form. Clubs should also submit a copy of their
premium lists to Performance Events. The good news there is the fact that AKC is willing to accept
premiums electronically. Simply email your premium list to Performance Events Assistant Tonya
Romano at tbr@akc.org . Premiums can also be sent to fieldtrials@akc.org .
Getting More From Your Field Trial Weekend …
Participating in dogs sports of any kind requires a commitment of both time and money. It is,
therefore, not surprising, that many clubs have sought to enrich the field trial experience for
exhibitors and make the most of the fact that people have traveled from far and near to attend their
events.
Training matches, open stake-only events, and two day trials are just some enticements on offer
around the country. Some clubs have even run non-regular stakes in which entries were restricted
based on the handlers’ age / experience level. Your editor’s personal favorite “extra”, though, is the
Veterans stake. Those young whippersnappers in the regular stakes might be faster, but there is
also much to be said for watching a pack of white faced veterans trail rabbit.
The most recent Veterans Stake was offered by DC of Metro Atlanta at the start
of its three trial weekend this spring. The stake was run on Friday before the
club’s open stake-only trial, and 17 dogs participated. Their ages ranged from
seven to 16.5 years. Robert Schwalbe and Jamie Sexton served as stake
judges. They utilized a scoring system that factored in a handicap assigned to
each competitor based on his / her age.
Placements were awarded as follows:
1 st Truman aka DC Sunlights Truman JE. Truman is a nine year old SL owned by Phyllis
Meseroll & Michael Nothstein.
2 nd Hobson aka CH Hillandachs Hobson Pruitt W CD JE. Hobson is a 16.5 year old SW owned
3 rd Steffi aka FC Sunlight Steffi. Steffi is a nine year old SL owned by Phyllis Meseroll & Michael
Warble.
NBQ JR aka DC Kelkor's Cassidy JR. JR is a 13 year old SW owned by Pam Reed.
The Atlanta club waived the entry fee for any dog older than 16 and offered a prize for the oldest
competitor. The recipient of this year’s award was Alice Moyer’s Bogey aka FC Hillside's One
Outside the rabbit enclosure, many clubs have also fostered social interaction between exhibitors by
offering Friday and / or Saturday evening dinners. Often these are potluck meals. Some clubs do
opt for a local restaurant, however, while still others provide a “catered” experience if they are lucky
enough to have a clubhouse kitchen facility and sufficient volunteers.
It is perhaps not surprising that the apex of such post-trial festivities would be
sponsored by the Bayou DC of New Orleans. The club has frequently hosted a
Halloween costume party during its fall field trial weekend. The inspired
zaniness of its annual Mardi Gras fête, though, is truly a sight to behold.
That celebration is held in conjunction with Bayou’s January field trials. It
SPRING 2009 7 of 23
features a colorfully named food contest — the Swamp Rabbit Cook-off — as well
as themed decorations and prizes. The highlight, however, is a Saturday evening parade.
Costumes are strongly encouraged for both human and canine attendees … and the 2009 edition
was presided over by a canine King and Queen resplendent in robes and crowns.
Not even the last minute relocation of the trials from Prentiss, MS to Sealy, TX put a damper on this
year’s parade. Trial chair Randy David and the Bayou club just adapted by pressing the fleet of
rented golf carts — normally utilized to shuttle dogs and people the quarter mile from the clubhouse
to the rabbit enclosure — into service as parade floats!
Beagler Owen Baker and his wife Elaine served as this year’s parade marshals. Prior marshals have
included Doug Ljungren, AKC Director of Performance Events, and Mel Stewart, Field Director of
Hounds. Owen was so tickled by the notion of a parade that he invited neighbors to come and
watch the funny Dachshund people tool around in the dark slinging Mardi Gras beads.
The April and May 2009 editions of the B-Naturals newsletter have featured a two part article on
As someone who recently had a 14.5 year old dog diagnosed with Lyme’s disease despite the fact
that he had been Frontlined regularly his entire life, I can attest to how frightening TBDs can be.
Just getting the correct diagnosis can be tricky … in Oliver’s case we initially believed that there was
a back issue at play. He showed signs of deep pain in both the neck and spine, but no disc problems
were evident on x-rays. That fact led my vet to consider TBDs so we tested for Rocky Mountain
Spotted Fever, Ehrlichia, and Lyme’s. After a very high titer on the Lyme’s, we began Oliver on a
course of Doxycyline and saw immediate improvement.
What’s in a name …
The
Annual
The National
Host Club
The Invitational
These are all terms that refer to separate, unique Dachshund field trials held annually. Given that
each event has its own distinct history and traditions, we thought a brief discussion of these trials
would be interesting to our readers. In future issues of The Voice, we will plan to tackle the history
of these trials individually and in greater detail.
In this country, the first Dachshund field trial was held in 1933 under the aegis of the short-lived
Unites States Dachshund Field Trial Club. The USDFTC was established by fanciers determined to
preserve the working skills that made the Dachshund unique. This club was based in the mid-
Atlantic area, and its field trial format was quite rigorous. In many respects, the system bore far
more resemblance to den trials and blood tracking than modern brace-on-rabbit trials. Elaborate
burrows were created, requiring weeks of construction and installation. This work load proved
untenable for the club’s small work force, however, and the USDFTC disbanded after just two years.
The Dachshund Club of America stepped into the void left by the USDFTC’s abrupt demise and
began holding AKC affiliated field trials in 1935. The club’s first trial took place at the James Cox
Brady estate in Lamington, NJ on September 22 nd of that year. A second trial occurred later that fall
in West Chester, PA. The “best in field” at both trials was a 12 pound black and tan smooth bitch
named Amsel v. Holzgarten. Amsel was owned by George McKay Schieffelin, then DCA Secretary
and the club’s AKC Delegate.
Since those first field trials in 1935, DCA has held at least one trial each year with the exception of
1947 - 1950 when no trials were held. DCA actually hosted three trials per year from 1936 through
1940. Six dogs finished field championships during that period. Fittingly, the first of these was
Amsel v. Holzgarten who finished her field championship in style by again prevailing in the open
all age bitch stake before defeating the dog stake winner at the September 20, 1936 DCA Trial.
The one trial per year tradition began in 1941 (1959 being an
exception with two trials). This annual trial was held in late
fall and simply referred to as “the DCA Field Trial” because it
was the ONLY Dachshund field trial held each year. In its
early years, the trial rotated around between various sites in
New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. By the time that
the Dachshund Club of New Jersey held the first licensed trial
on April 23, 1967, however, the Dachshund field trial
community had settled into north-central New Jersey for
good. The inaugural DCNJ trial was held on state game lands
in Sussex County, while the DCA trial that year took place on
the Brady estate yet again. Through its well established ties
with beagler Lloyd Bowers (a frequent judge), DCA was able
to hold its 1968 trial at the now familiar Central Jersey
Beagle Club in Sergeantsville, NJ. Field trial enthusiasts were
Between 1935 and 1946, eight
Dachshunds earned AKC field
championships. All but one of
these were smooths.
The lone exception was George
C. White’s CH Vagabund v.
Paulinenberg, who became a
field champion in 1943. This dog
was the first wirehaired field
champion as well as the breed’s
first dual champion. Vagabund
was the grandsire of CH Brentwald
Joshua W and is, therefore, behind
the pedigrees of many of today’s
standard wires.
SPRING 2009 9 of 23
thrilled by this move. The beagle club’s 70 fenced acres were well stocked with rabbits … a welcome
change after years of struggling with too few bunnies at other sites.
The Connecticut Yankee DC was inspired by DCNJ’s field trial endeavor and began offering fun days
and later sanctioned trials. It held its first licensed event on May 2, 1971. Clubs in California, New
York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio also became licensed over the next decade as interest grew among
fanciers. This expansion of the sport — particularly its spread beyond the Northeast — ultimately
generated interest in a “national” trial which could be held in conjunction with the yearly DCA
specialty. This idea came to fruition in 1984.
In many respects, 1984 was watershed year for Dachshund field trials. The Dachshund Association
of Long Island became licensed to hold trials. Meanwhile out west, the first ever regional trial was
held on March 24 th in California under the aegis of DCA I. That event and the Northern California DC
trial the next day represented the first two-event circuit in Dachshund field trial history. Most
significant of all, however, DCA hosted two trials in 1984: its annual fall event and an additional trial
held “in association” with the national specialty. This extra trial took place on June 25 th at the
Central Jersey Beagle Club in Sergeantsville. [The national specialty host club in 1984 was the
Dachshund Fanciers Association of Berks County. The conformation show and annual meeting were
held in suburban Philadelphia.]
Some people maintain that this event was the first DCA
National Field Trial, but it was never officially designated with
that name. The minutes from the 1984 DCA Annual Meeting
do, however, record that a motion was made and passed “to
hold a Dachshund Club of America National Field Trial in
conjunction with the National Specialty Show”. As a result,
the 1985 DCA trial held in Yelm, Washington is generally
considered to have been DCA’s first national field event.
The winner of the 1985 National
Field Trial was Robert and June
Kelly’s CH Ivic Cevan’s Foxfire CDX.
This talented standard longhaired
dog would eventually finish his
competition career as DC Ivic
Cevan’s Foxfire CDX TD CG VC.
DCA has held a National Field Trial every year since 1985 with the location rotating around the
country along with that of the club’s national specialty show. Despite the introduction of this new
event, there was a keen interest among fanciers — particularly in the Northeast — to preserve the
history and traditions of the yearly fall DCA sponsored trial in New Jersey. As a result, that event
has continued to be held. It is now referred to as the Annual Field Trial, however, in order to
distinguish it from its newer DCA counterpart.
Given that the Annual and the National field trials are officially hosted by DCA rather than local clubs
or regions, the parent club created distinct trophy plans for both events. At the National, the
Absolute winner receives an 11 inch bronze plaque while 8 inch plaques are awarded for first place
in each stake. [11 inch plaques are awarded on just two occasions each year. The other plaques go
to the variety winners at the DCA National Specialty Show.] The Annual offers an 8” plaque for the
Absolute Winner and 5 inch plaques to each stake winner.
Once the “National” tradition was established, the idea of pairing it with a Host Club Trial was not
far behind. Host club events not only provide additional opportunities for points and placements;
they also offer dogs the chance to work what is often an unfamiliar locale before the “big event”. In
2005, DCA recognized the caliber of competition present at these associated events when the Board
decided to allow host clubs to offer the same trophy plan it utilizes for the Annual.
The Buckeye Invitational is the latest addition to the ever growing list of events available to the
Dachshund field trial community. This non-AKC event is sponsored by the Buckeye Dachshund Club.
It began in 2004 and has been held each November since at the Buckeye Beagle Running Grounds in
Dundee, Ohio.
The Invitational’s procedures are unique and represent a considerable departure from the AKC
system for Dachshund trials, which are firmly rooted in the traditions of brace Beagling.
Competitors at the Invitational are run in braces on rabbit, but there are very few other similarities
SPRING 2009 10 of 23
with the AKC format insofar as how the competition is managed and scored.
The trial entry is limited to 20 dogs who are invited to participate based on their ranking in the DCA
Field Trial Merit Point system for the previous year. The Buckeye club sends out “invitations” to the
owners of the top 20 point earners early each year. If an invited Dachshund cannot participate, the
next field champion on the Merit Point list is invited until all 20 slots are filled.
During the trial, all dogs get to run in the first two series. Both series are braced separately before
the start of first series. Dogs with two losses are eliminated from competiton beyond second series,
but a dog who sustains one defeat during the course of the trial can, in fact, win the Invitational.
Two pairs of judges alternate series throughout the day, and all four judges score the final brace.
This system was designed to overcome what some felt was a limitation of the AKC format — the fact
that a dog could win a large class based entirely on its success in as little as two runs.
AKC trials have been held in association with the Invitational to encourage interest and participation.
Initially, the accompanying events were held under the aegis of DCA Region IV. Once it achieved
AKC recognition, however, Buckeye Dachshund Club began hosting its own licensed trials on
Saturday and Sunday, with the Invitational slated for the Friday before.
The Summer edition of The Voice will feature a more detailed discussion on the Annual Trial and its
history.
