Chairman’s message
2008 has already been and continues to promise to be an exceptional year.
The 2008 DCA national field events were accomplished early and we have the
many hard working members of the Dallas-Fort Worth Dachshund Club to
thank for hosting, as well as the fellow DCA members who came in from
around the country to contribute where needed. Of course many of you have
already heard that this year's Absolute Winner of the DCA National Field Trial
was 10 year old Laura Knoll and her dog FC Annie Ochre von Dorndorf.
Congratulations to Laura, her family, Patt Nance (Ochre's breeder) and to ALL
the other dogs and handlers who earned exceptional honors this year, in the
field, in the earth, and "on line" at the DCA tracking tests.
Next year, the National field events will be held in October in southern
Pennsylvania. The tracking and earthdog tests will be hosted by the
Dachshund Club of New Jersey, and the field trials will be hosted by the
Metropolitan Washington Dachshund Club. They (and we) have almost 18
months to prepare for the festivities. See you all there!!!!
There are many changes in the dachshund field trial schedules planned for
this year, and it will take some doing to keep up. Several clubs have
recognized a need to attract and help newcomers to the sport and their plans
reflect some ideas for other clubs to consider as well. This month DCNJ is
hosting a one trial weekend that will start with educational and training
opportunities Saturday morning, followed by Field Champions Saturday
afternoon and consecutive open stakes on Sunday. Wolverine DC has for
many years offered a similar "one trial" weekend along with training or "fun"
activities and they've certainly shown that the potential income lost can be
more than made up for in interest and good will generated, especially with
their local newcomers. This year I've also heard that at least two clubs are
planning to offer an "Open stakes only" trial on their ground on Friday afternoon before their regularly scheduled
two trial weekends. These are clubs that usually host one weekend a year and are relatively isolated. What a
great opportunity, again primarily for local people, to be able to get to another trial to work on getting points on their
dogs...without having to pay any more towards prohibitive gasoline costs.
2008 sees most, if not eventually all, specialty clubs taking advantage of the new "4 trial rule" and opting to host
their own additional specialty trials rather than DCA regional events. Apparently the time had come for our wings to
spread! DCA Regional events will continue to be available as before and we can look forward to always having
them available to fill in the need especially in an area without licensed clubs. I'm having the unique pleasure of
working with a dedicated group of earthdog enthusiasts who may need DCA's help to set up qualifying tests in
Alaska, where there are encountering many unique obstacles to getting a local club licensed. I salute everyone's
efforts as we watch these programs continue to expand.
Growth of any sport cannot be without conflict, and we are beginning to see an occasional problem as multiple
clubs attempt to organize so many events with only a limited number of weekends available. I trust that it will prove
a credit to our better nature that we will be able to accept and work with or around the issues that develop as a
result. We must maintain that every one and every club be allowed to give first consideration to their own
opportunities and needs. I suspect that as the numbers of trials, specialties and earthdog tests continue to grow
that there will be competition for resources. As with most things in our society, "competition" is not always
necessarily a bad thing, as it can be used to spur us on to doing even "more better." I, for one, am looking forward
to the creative ideas that clubs come up with as our performance events activities grow.
SPRING 2008 2 of 37

Region V – Issues that have been discussed within the Region were presented. These issues address potential
rule changes and other needed actions.
Region VI – A summary was presented regarding the events held in 2007. The Metropolitan Washington
Dachshund Club in conjunction with the Dachshund Club of New Jersey is hosting the DCA Nationals in October
2009.
Chairman’s Report:
Positive comments were made regarding the events hosted Dallas – Ft. Worth Dachshund Club. There was
information presented that was discussed in the DCA Board meeting:
- The DCA Treasurer reported that Regional finances cannot be separate from DCA finances.
- No Regional events will be approved for Regions that are in default for fees due to DCA.
- Ongoing discussion by the DCA Board regarding the effectiveness of Regions.
- It was clarified that there were 2 candidates, Larry Gohlke and Robert Schwalbe, for the position of the
TAC Secretary.
General Discussion:
1. Hunt Tests – There was discussion regarding Hunt Tests that have been held in 2007 and previous years. It
was suggested that information be compiled as to participation of Dachshunds in Hunt Tests conducted around the
country. There was a statement made by the TAC Chair that the Basset Club of America wants to involve other
breeds in Hunt Tests so as to seek an AKC Title for this venue. Also, there was a request for Larry Gohlke to write
an article about Hunt Tests.
2. Judges Eligibility Requirements – There was a question as to the status of this issue. The TAC Chair advised
that this issue has not been dropped and is still an ongoing concern to be discussed further. It was suggested that
a proposal be developed to distribute for more discussion.
3. The TAC Chair clarified that the TAC is an advisory committee and not a governing group.
Unfinished Business:
There was general discussion regarding Hunt Tests as previously addressed in these minutes. This issue was also
discussed at the TAC Annual meeting in March 2007.
New Business:
There was discussion regarding conflicts in scheduling dates during 2007. It was decided that corresponding dates
for events be published on a regular basis.
There was discussion as to the feasibility of the field champion class becoming a non-regular class. This may
eliminate the AKC recording fee. There needs to be more follow-up on this issue.
There was a suggestion that the Earth Dog test be held prior to the field trials at the DCA Nationals.
DCA FIELD TRIAL MERIT AWARDS: DCA Membership requirements for Awards will be in accordance with current policy as determined by the
DCA Board for DCA Merit Award Programs. Only those points earned for placements in the Field Champion stakes at AKC licensed or member
trials will count toward the DCA Field Trial Merit Awards. Points are tabulated using the Delaney System +1 for first through fourth place, based
on the number of starters. In the case of ties, dogs will receive the same place award, with the next place(s) being skipped. A minimum of two
placements in Field Champion stakes during the award year are required to earn an award, and/or be included in preliminary listings.

DCA COMMITTEES
Last December, DCA Secretary Marlies Noll requested that DCA members who were interested in serving on or
assisting with the work of the various DCA committees submit their names to the DCA board. The resulting pool
of volunteers is currently being tapped by the committee chairs in the hope of better utilizing club members both
as committee members and as assistants for the sometimes mountainous amount of work being done. The
board is planning to make these requests annually, so be sure to look for them again this winter!
As the committees were being reviewed and appointments made during its January meeting, the observation was
made by the DCA Board that the structure of the Trial Advisory Committee as it has been written is inconsistent
with the proper structure of a board committee as prescribed in our club bylaws. As an example, "committees"
do not have "subcommittees" (such as TAC’s current "Executive Committee" is described) and there are only
appointed members in a committee, not "elected" delegates. In order to correct the discrepancies identified, the
DCA Board will be developing a new “structure and purpose” statement to bring the committee more in line with
the bylaws. The purposes and associated work projects performed by the Trial Advisory Committee in the past
are expected to continue without disruption.
DCA PERFORMANCE EVENTS
The DCA Performance Events list on Yahoo! Groups continues to grow. This list was established to foster direct
communication between the DCA Board, the TAC, and those DCA members involved with field trials and
earthdog tests. Please consider signing on if you are a DCA member. If you share an email address with
another DCA member, you might consider getting a separate Yahoo! ID for each person so that the numbers
associated with any list polls will more accurately reflect the opinions of the group’s members. This list is
moderated in order to restrict content to matters directly pertaining to DCA. Individual or specialty club
information and advertising are kept to a minimum.
In addition to contacting individual members within DCA, TAC is also seeking ways to contact and / or poll the
performance event community on a club by club basis. There is a plan to solicit input from Dachshund specialty
club liasons designated by their respective boards. Information will be sent out to all the Dachshund club
corresponding secretaries in the near future so please be aware and look out for its arrival.
DCA Secretary Marlies Noll has a procedure in place for any clubs wishing to take over the corresponding date
for a field trial from a DCA Regional event. In order for an individual specialty club to get its own trial approved on
that date, DCA must notify AKC that it wishes to cancel its date. Contact Marlies at mdachs@aol.com for more
information about this process.
In January, the DCA board adopted a new policy whereby event applications submitted for DCA Regional shows,
tests or trials will not be approved to the AKC if there are any outstanding fees due the DCA from any event held in
your region. DCA currently requires a $1 per entry fee. All payments should be sent directly to DCA Treasurer
Ken Levison. Also, each region should submit an annual financial report in order for a DCA tax report to be filed.
GETTING THE WORD OUT!
The DACHS-FIELD-EVENT-INFO@Yahoogroups.com list is a site specifically set up to post premium lists for
upcoming field trials and earthdog tests.
Carrie Hamilton will forward information about upcoming events to a private email list that includes over 200
addresses of interested people from around the country. You may contact her at HAMILTCE@airproducts.com .
It should be remembered that many of us :o) appreciate links to club or individual’s websites where
announcements and premiums are posted rather than receiving large attachments directly.
JoAnn Frier-Murza (digm2@aol.com) maintains a website with links for upcoming earthdog tests in the east –
www.earthdog.info will link to the homepage of the Village Green Earthdog Center in New Jersey. Dennis
Broderick maintains a website for earthdog tests held in the west (“and anyone else who asks”). Dennis’ website
is located at http://www.duffyscavern.org/Earthe_dogges.html .
There is a calendar feature on the DCA Performance Events list that we are attempting to utilize to help clubs
plan their future events around a schedule that sometimes fluctuates from year to year. Please consider using it
as it provides much more immediate notice than waiting on “The Voice” or the AKC website.
NEW EARTHDOG BOOK PLANNED
JoAnn Frier-Murza (digm2@aol.com) of Lothlorien Working Terriers and Dachshunds and the Village Green Farm
Earthdog Center, NJ is working on the second edition of her book "Earthdog Ins & Outs" and would like to solicit
input:
"Making tunnels is always a question that new earthdoggers and new test committees want to know
about. The AKC rules are specific about some components, but there are lots of possibilities as to
how to accomplish the rest. Although the straight parts of the tunnels are pretty routine, the dogquarry
end and the doors on top of the tunnels can vary a lot. If you have judged at an event where
the tunnel design was especially well done, please let me know where it was. If you are part of a
club committee who has thought hard to make tunnels that are versatile and useful, I can use your
help. I can share these designs in a section of the book, and people will be able to see what has
worked for your club and in our test environment. Drawings or photos of the designs and a
description of any construction trick that isn't easy to figure out from the picture would be great.
Explain why this design works so well for the judge, dog, and exhibitor. Make sure to let me know
who or what club should be credited with the design and the pictures."
PERFORMANCE JUDGES AND THE AKC
Application Process for New Earthdog Event Judges
From the AKC website:
The AKC Performance Events Department announces a revised application process for prospective Earthdog
judges. The process for becoming a judge begins by attending an Earthdog seminar taught by an AKC field
representative. At the seminar, a Judges Application form will be handed out. It is the responsibility of the
applicant to fill out the form as eligibility requirements are completed. Once all requirements have been met, the
application form should be mailed to the Performance Events Department, 5580 Centerview Drive, Raleigh, NC
27606. Upon verification of the information provided, the person will receive a judge's number, their name will
appear in the Judges Online Directory on the AKC web site, and they will be approved to judge a licensed
Earthdog event at the Junior Earthdog (JE) level. Additional apprenticeships at higher levels are required to judge
at the Senior Earthdog and Master Earthdog level, but this is done after the initial application has been submitted.
For information about upcoming Earthdog seminars, please click here. For additional questions, please contact
Lisa Carroll at LAC@akc.org.
JUDGES RECORDS AT AKC
It was recently discovered that the judges' directory listed on the AKC website has been set up to "drop" names
that have not shown any activity in a while. This was a program developed by the website managers to keep
them from overloading the database. (It appears to be about 6 years of inactivity will cause a name to be
dropped.)
According to Lisa Carroll, AKC Performance Events Manager, this does not mean that people taken off the list will
AUTOMATICALLY not be approved to judge again. A club wanting to hire a judge in this position would need to
contact AKC Performance Events, much in the way we do now when getting earthdog judges approved for a
higher class. Each case will then considered individually by her office. Suppose, for example, you want to hire a
judge who has not done any judging for several or more years but had extensive experience prior to the lapse in
assignments. In this case, the AKC may decide to either simply re-approve the judge or require that the judge
takes a test (not necessarily a seminar) in order to demonstrate that their knowledge of the regulations is current.
If a judge is not reapproved, it would most likely be because they had very limited experience prior to the lapse.
Lisa mentioned that no where in the regulations does it stipulate that the AKC cannot impose additional
restrictions on the judges' approval process and further noted that this policy is really being enforced from a
"common sense" perspective. It is simply one way in which the AKC can uphold the expected standards for
judges of their events. The AKC will always maintain its right to reserve approving judges “in house.” Individual
judges should be aware of this policy and contact Lisa directly if they have questions.
In light of this situation, earthdog test secretaries need to be reminded that unless a secretary’s report is
submitted for the Introduction to Quarry non-regular class to the AKC (no recording fees required) then
the judge is not credited with having had the assignment.
Judges should periodically check and update inaccurate information posted on the AKC Judges Directory
(http://www.akc.org/judges_directory/). Questions or corrections may be submitted to the Judges Operation
Department for the appropriate performance event. For field trial and earthdog judges the addresses are listed
below.
More from the DCA 2008 “Country Events” …
[Photos by J.D. Powell, Brian Gunn, Jean Dieden, Sarah Helber, Sandi Myers and Barb Teigen]
Trackers gather for the TD & TDX draws. Believe it or not …
it was pitch black at 7 AM!
Hospitality at its finest … Sandi Myers’ s
“Tracking Brownie” complete with
marzipan Dachshund, flags and glove was
a big hit at lunch!
Ken Hagmueller and DC Nexi’s Lone Star Express ML
After 4 days of tracking in the DFW metroplex, things moved on to Ladonia …
The Oscar Oasis at the Lone Star Dachshund Conservancy in Ladonia, Texas. This pavilion was built in memory of FC
Longtime's Oscar Von Zimmer JE and served as our clubhouse during the national field and earthdog events.
Ashley Dumas and Trial Secretary Mary Powell brace the
dogs for the host club trial…
And they’re off …
…while the assembled crowd scribbles names – happy
to have some shelter from the elements!
SPRING 2008 14 of 37

And then the weather got worse … sleet and ice
moved in. This icicled sign greeted arriving field
trialers on Friday morning.
Pam Reed had a very good day, though. She is shown
here accepting 3rd and 4th place ribbons from DCA Open
challenge trophy. “Dancing with Angels”, a Garry
CGC CG (6/6/1991 - 4/1/2004) for his contributions to the
roots of Dachshund field trials in the South. Judy and
Ms. Ana were the first to stake a claim on this lovely
piece!
The pavilion was a popular spot. – Even Ann Steele’s Gator
appreciated the portable heaters. Conditions were too harsh for
outside group photos during the National Field Trial. Like the
folks pictured below, everyone was cold and … and by Friday’s
end … quite soggy!
A feat equaled by Pam Bethke in the DCA Open All Age
A new section of "The Voice" where editorials and commentary may be posted.
Before being considered for publication, all articles must be submitted to the
Trial Advisory Committee and will be reviewed for content by the three
members of the committee.
FIELD CHAMPION STAKES
The January issue of the Voice contained an opinion piece submitted by Sherry Ruggieri entitled “Oh Split!."
This article provided encouragement for clubs to make the decision to run both Field Champion Dog and Field
Champion Bitch stakes, rather than a Combined Field Champion stake. Then "Voice" editor Larry Gohlke
allowed that counter arguments would be entertained in subsequent issues. To that end, we submit a sampling
of comments received by the TAC. Some correspondents requested to remain anonymous.
“My club divided the FC stake when we had few rabbits, but prefers to run field champions as a combined
stake.”
“There is extra difficulty in finding field champion judges – it’s even harder when you split the stakes. There is
also the extra fee for judges / prizes / rosettes (Not to mention judges' meals) to consider when you are the one
assuming financial responsibility to your club.”
"The field champion stake should be a competitive one among field champions, otherwise we should be talking
about a Bitch Field Champion and a Dog Field Champion title."
“The simple preference to finish a trial earlier in the day is also not a reason to split unless it is necessary.”
From Patt Nance:
The Voice
Forum
“Regarding the splitting of Field Champion stakes, my perspective is different than the thoughtful, wellarticulated
article published in the last Voice. (Splitting FC stakes, of course, refers to running Field
Champions in classes divided by sex - FC Dogs, FC Bitches - instead of as one combined-sex class.)
The effect of advocating for division of all Field Champion stakes, if not the intent, is a push toward the
'generic' field trial. I am hoping we will avoid that.
I like that some clubs split the Field Champion classes for I find smaller classes and more placement
opportunities very enjoyable.
And I like that some clubs run Field Champions as combined stakes, too, for I relish opportunities to win
or place in large classes and find them very enjoyable.
(And I like the Michigan weekend where there is one trial over two days and the Buckeye weekend that
puts a special spotlight on Field Champions...)
All weekends, with their various grounds, judges, trial committees, and competitors, are fun but I think
it adds to the flavor when trials and classes are different beyond those entities. I appreciate the 'spice to
the sport' added when clubs are willing to do things differently.
Please, let us not advocate for sameness throughout. I, for one, enjoy a little field trial variety.”
HUNT TEST FOR DACHSHUNDS
There has been interest in the development of a hunt test program for Dachshunds for some years. Here is
Cheri Faust's report about one group's efforts (quite possibly the first) to actually come up with a prototypical
format. Others are welcome to submit comments and any ideas they may be developing.
Background
Briefly, about ten years ago, the Dachshund Club of America was approached by the Basset Hound Club of
America with the idea of establishing a hunt test for scent hounds that might develop into an AKC-recognized
event. In 1998, the BHCA developed test regulations and established a BHCA titling program. DCA, through
the Trial Advisory Committee, discussed the hunt test program in 2003 and 2004, but did not follow-up with
plans for a Dachshund hunt test program. In the meantime, Dachshunds were participating in BHCA hunt tests,
although tests were and are few and far between.
Current
Following BHCA hunt tests in 2006 and 2007 in Ladonia, Texas, there was an interest expressed by Dachshund
participants for more opportunities to work with their dogs using the hunt test format. Current BHCA regulations
require that the test secretary be a BHCA member, which made it problematic for Dachshund owners to host
BHCA hunt tests. So, with the intention of exposing more people to the hunt test concept, guidelines for a
Dachshund test were established under the name of the non-member, non-organizationally affiliated “Texas
Hunting Hounds”. While loosely based on the BHCA regulations, the THH guidelines are less rigid in terms of
administrative procedure, simplify the judging and scoring of dogs to a pass/fail basis, and make voicing and gun
steadiness optional designations rather than requirements. Anyone wanting to hold hunt tests for Dachshunds
in their area may use these guidelines or modify them in any way they like – the idea is to give the hunt test a
try! The people that I’ve spoken with have been very enthusiastic about the format, and like the emphasis
placed on handlers working cooperatively with their dogs throughout the test, as well as the opportunity to have
their dogs tested on a solo basis without the influence of a brace mate.
THH Statistics
To date, four hunt tests have been held, with a total of 76 dogs tested. Breeds participating to-date include
Dachshunds, Basset Hounds and Petit Basset Griffon Vendeens. Beagles are also eligible to participate.
39 of the 56 dogs tested passed in the Solo format.
12 of the 20 dogs tested passed in the 2-Pack format.
No dogs have been tested in the 4-Pack format.
20 of the 76 dogs tested were recognized for the proper use of voice on rabbit scent.
42 of the dogs that opted to be tested were recognized for gun steadiness.
