planning to offer an "Open stakes only" trial on their ground on Friday afternoon before their regularly scheduled
two trial weekends. These are clubs that usually host one weekend a year and are relatively isolated. What a
great opportunity, again primarily for local people, to be able to get to another trial to work on getting points on their
dogs...without having to pay any more towards prohibitive gasoline costs.
2008 sees most, if not eventually all, specialty clubs taking advantage of the new "4 trial rule" and opting to host
their own additional specialty trials rather than DCA regional events. Apparently the time had come for our wings to
spread! DCA Regional events will continue to be available as before and we can look forward to always having
them available to fill in the need especially in an area without licensed clubs. I'm having the unique pleasure of
working with a dedicated group of earthdog enthusiasts who may need DCA's help to set up qualifying tests in
Alaska, where there are encountering many unique obstacles to getting a local club licensed. I salute everyone's
efforts as we watch these programs continue to expand.
Growth of any sport cannot be without conflict, and we are beginning to see an occasional problem as multiple
clubs attempt to organize so many events with only a limited number of weekends available. I trust that it will prove
a credit to our better nature that we will be able to accept and work with or around the issues that develop as a
result. We must maintain that every one and every club be allowed to give first consideration to their own
opportunities and needs. I suspect that as the numbers of trials, specialties and earthdog tests continue to grow
that there will be competition for resources. As with most things in our society, "competition" is not always
necessarily a bad thing, as it can be used to spur us on to doing even "more better." I, for one, am looking forward
to the creative ideas that clubs come up with as our performance events activities grow.
