Chairman’s Message 

DCA and all dachshund specialty clubs are, according to their 

constitutions, volunteer organizations. People working on 

behalf of the clubs, the events and the exhibitors without 

payment, and commonly without any significant fanfare or 

notoriety. Volunteers are not hired personnel with years of 

training to do these jobs. They are well meaning individuals 

donating their time, trying to help out. Without each and 

every volunteer, AKC clubs and events would simply cease to 

exist. 

Yet how often observers and participants will not only remain 

unaware of the months (or years) of planning and effort that 

goes on behind the scenes for the event to happen in the 

first place, but will also not notice those working the myriad 

of positions required, and, quite sadly, may even act out, 

becoming openly critical of the choices and efforts made. In 

the age of the internet, critical gestures can reach hundreds 

if not thousands of people within microseconds. How quickly 

the unthinking click of a button can demoralize those upon 

whom the very existence of our events depend. I know 

we've all seen it.

Every club and every event has its cadre of unsung heroes, both members and friends, 

who take precious time out of their lives to see that each and every event "gets done." 

Quite ordinary folk, really...but willing to work together to accomplish the necessary tasks, 

sometimes in spite of conflicting personalities and temperaments. From the submission of 

applications to the communication with judges, to the ordering of ribbons and shopping for 

prizes, to the preparation of grounds, to working a raffle, to buying and serving the food, 

to organizing the parking and cleaning up the grounds, to the "after event" recording and 

reviews, and to each and every other job in between...we all can do well to open our eyes 

to not just notice but to appreciate those without whom none of our "fun" would ever 

happen.

DCA FIELD TRIAL MERIT AWARDS: DCA Membership requirements for Awards will be in accordance with current policy as determined by the DCA 

Board for DCA Merit Award Programs. Only those points earned for placements in the Field Champion stakes at AKC licensed or member trials will count toward the 

DCA Field Trial Merit Awards. Points are tabulated using the Delaney System +1 for first through fourth place, based on the number of starters. In the case of ties, 

dogs will receive the same place award, with the next place(s) being skipped. A minimum of two placements in Field Champion stakes during the award year are 

required to earn an award, and / or be included in preliminary listings.

September 22, 1935 at the James Cox 

Brady Estate in Lamington, NJ. 

Gauner v. Fleesensee, an eight pound 

black and tan smooth dog owned by George 

McKay Schiefflin, was the OAAD winner. 

Amsel v. Holzgarten, a 12 pound black and 

tan smooth bitch also owned by Schiefflin, 

placed first in the OAAB stake and beat 

Gauner to win the inter-stake competition.

Correction for November Buckeye DC Field Trial Results 

The Buckeye Dachshund Club reports that due to a number of crises – including the need to rush 

their trial chair to the hospital – the wrong dog was credited as the absolute winner at its Saturday, 

November 13 th field trial. In the confusion, this mistake was not uncovered until the owner of the 

actual winner saw the results published in both the VOICE and the DCA Newsletter. 

Angie Von Der Pfauenbrucke, owned by Joanne Greer, won the OAAB stake that day. This win 

completed Angie’s field championship. She then went on to beat the FCD stake winner for the 

Absolute. Congratulations, Angie and Joanne! 

[I tried to reach Joanne to obtain a picture of she and Angie for inclusion in the Voice but was 

unsuccessful. If anyone has a photo of Angie and Joanne from the trial, please share! – TF]

DCMA Veterans Stake 

In recent years, DC of Metro Atlanta has established a lovely tradition – sponsoring a Veteran stake 

before the start of its three trial weekend. The club’s 2011 Veterans stake was run on Thursday, 

March 24th and 21 dogs participated. Their ages ranged from seven to 15 years. Robert Schwalbe 

and Jamie Sexton served as stake judges. They utilized a scoring system that factored in a 

handicap assigned to each competitor based on his / her age. 

Placements were awarded as follows: 

1 st Tilly aka DC Amtekel’s Tehillah RA ME. Tilly is a ten year old SL owned by Melanie 

Simmons and Andra O’Connell. 

2 nd Fritz aka FC Fritz von Scruffy. 14 year old Fritz was a SW owned by Sherry Ruggieri. 

Sadly, Fritz passed away recently just two months shy of his 15 th birthday. Fritz did not 

start his field trial career until age 12! 

3 rd Ruby aka CH Englelong Ruby MS. Ruby is a 14 year old MS owned by Betty Adams. 

4 th Gabby aka FC Deister-Sophie’s Gift of Gab. Gabby is a nine year old SS owned by 

Ann Deister. 

NBQ Badger aka DC EZ Goins Badger Me Not MW RA AX AXJ NF SE. Badger is an eight 

year old MW owned by Karen Mann. 

The Atlanta club offers a prize for the oldest competitor. The recipient of this year’s award was 

Porkchop aka Shadach’s Mikalahee CD. Porkchop is a 15 years old ML owned by Diane Sennett.
