Who we are
The NHM cares for one of the world’s important natural
history collections totalling more than 70 million
specimens.
Over 300 scientists work at the NHM, producing 500+
research papers.
We host 5,000 visiting scientists who spend over 18,000
days a year using our collections.

The NHM Library contains:
over 1,000,000 books.
25,000 journal titles.
Who we are
The NHM holds one of the finest natural history art
collections containing approximately 600,000 works of
art.
4,647,613 visitors passed through our doors in 2010 while
our website had 13 million visits.

Who we are
The NHM is the leading member of SYNTHESIS, a major
nine year EU‐funded project.
We are heavily involved in other EU‐funded projects
including VIBRANT and BHL‐Europe.

What is our content
The NHM currently has 85,000 specimens in our
collections management database which have associated
multimedia. We are working on delivering these assets
into GBIF.
We are currently commisioning a new Digital Asset
Management System which will contain millions of
multimedia assets with differing quality of Metadata.

What is our content
We believe that within the lifetime of this project the
NHM could contribute 200,000 multimedia assets into
EUROPEANA.
