Who we are<br />

Mission: To inspire and deliver science‐based plant<br />

conservation worldwide, enhancing the quality of life.<br />

‐ this aim is carried out through science and research in systematics,<br />

biological interactions, economic botany, conservation and horticulture.<br />

Collections:<br />

Herbarium –a reference collection of over 7 million specimens of dried plants<br />

and fungi, the most comprehensive in the world.<br />

Living plant collection –the largest and most comprehensive in the world, with<br />

representatives of > 1/8 of all flowering plant species.<br />

Millennium Seed Bank –conserving >10% of worlds’ wild plant species<br />

Economic Botany –over 83,000 specimens<br />

Library, Art & Archives ‐ >500,000 items


What is our content<br />

Herbarium specimen images:<br />

Currently over 200,000 of <strong>Kew</strong>‘s dried plant specimens<br />

have images available.<br />

Largely, but not exclusively, ‘type specimens‘,.<br />

Broad botanical coverage – vascular plants only.<br />

Broad geographical coverage – worldwide collections.<br />

Original images are all stored as 600ppi TIFFs (c.<br />

8000x10000 pixels).<br />

JPEG surrogates (c. 1500x2000 pixels) available via the <strong>Kew</strong><br />

online Herbarium Catalogue.
