I <str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> Effec<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Family</strong><br />

Zemmie Fleck<br />

The Christian family has been, since <strong>the</strong> beginning of<br />

time, <strong>the</strong> basic instituti<strong>on</strong> of human society. Genesis<br />

1:27 gives us <strong>the</strong> account of <strong>the</strong> creati<strong>on</strong> of man<br />

and woman and immediately follows with <strong>the</strong> next<br />

verse saying, "Then God blessed <strong>the</strong>m and God<br />

said to <strong>the</strong>m, Be fruitful and multiply, ... " The first<br />

recorded command that man receives from God is<br />

<strong>the</strong> instituti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> family. This should indicate <strong>the</strong><br />

importance that God has placed <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> family.<br />

The use of <strong>the</strong> word "Christian" to describe <strong>the</strong><br />

family is significant and should be well understood.<br />

Throughout <strong>the</strong> Bible, God pr<strong>on</strong>ounces <strong>the</strong> blessings<br />

and curses that will befall <strong>the</strong> family - but He makes<br />

a precise distincti<strong>on</strong> between those who are His<br />

and those who are not His. First, and foremost,<br />

<strong>the</strong> individual must be dedicated to God and His<br />

commands; but following a close sec<strong>on</strong>d is <strong>the</strong> entire<br />

familY which should be an example and a light to those<br />

who are lost.<br />

The Christian family should be <strong>the</strong> model to which all<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs will look and desire to imitate. In <strong>the</strong> Word of<br />

God <strong>the</strong>re is no questi<strong>on</strong> as to what is expected of <strong>the</strong><br />

Christian as an individual and as part of <strong>the</strong> family in<br />

which he has been placed.<br />

The Crisis in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Family</strong><br />

Sadly and c<strong>on</strong>versely, unregenerate society has now<br />

become <strong>the</strong> influence up<strong>on</strong> families and many factors<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tinue to exert pressure <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> family, causing it<br />

to disintegrate. Throughout <strong>the</strong> past few centuries<br />

and more profoundly within <strong>the</strong> last century, <strong>the</strong><br />

family has fallen victim to a gradual digressi<strong>on</strong> that<br />

has c<strong>on</strong>tinued to chip away at i<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> foundati<strong>on</strong>. Am<strong>on</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> major societal influences are: religi<strong>on</strong>, educati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

family values, occupati<strong>on</strong>al interes<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g>, and <strong>the</strong> civil and<br />

federal governmen<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g>. " ... [P]ostmodern worldviews<br />

and postmodern culture surround us. Ordinary<br />

Americans cannot avoid <strong>the</strong>se. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Postmodernism</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

shapes our lifestyles, <strong>the</strong> way we make a living, how<br />

we educate our children, and how we approach our<br />

pers<strong>on</strong>al problems and those of society.<br />

"With no absolute can<strong>on</strong>s of objective truth, <strong>the</strong><br />

rati<strong>on</strong>al is replaced by <strong>the</strong> aes<strong>the</strong>tic. We believe in<br />

what we like. Those unused to thinking in terms<br />

of absolute, objective truth still have opini<strong>on</strong>s and<br />

str<strong>on</strong>gly held beliefs. In fact, <strong>the</strong>ir beliefs may<br />

even be more difficult to dislodge, since <strong>the</strong>y admit<br />

no external criteria by which <strong>the</strong>se can be judged<br />

and shown to be wr<strong>on</strong>g. Since <strong>the</strong>ir beliefs are a<br />

functi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> will, <strong>the</strong>y cling to <strong>the</strong>m willfully.<br />

Since <strong>the</strong>ir beliefs will tend to have no foundati<strong>on</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r than <strong>the</strong>ir preferences and pers<strong>on</strong>ality, <strong>the</strong>y will<br />

interpret any criticism of <strong>the</strong>ir beliefs as a pers<strong>on</strong>al<br />

attack ... Persuasi<strong>on</strong> becomes impossible if every<strong>on</strong>e<br />

exis<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> in a self-c<strong>on</strong>tained world, speaking a language<br />

incomprehensible to ou<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g>iders. 'That may be true for<br />

you, but it isn't true for me."'i<br />

Redefining Christianity<br />

Religi<strong>on</strong>, to some degree, is still a vital factor in<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sidering <strong>the</strong> familial foundati<strong>on</strong> of our present<br />

society. The majority of people still find religi<strong>on</strong><br />

to hold a degree of comfort for <strong>the</strong>m; even if <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

religi<strong>on</strong> is a misrepresentati<strong>on</strong> of truth, or merely an<br />

"ideal." However, <strong>the</strong>re is a redefining of Christianity<br />

taking place today. Ask any<strong>on</strong>e of a number of<br />

people in <strong>the</strong> neighborhood and you will generally<br />

find that <strong>the</strong> majority of <strong>the</strong>m will say that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are "Christians." By <strong>the</strong>ir definiti<strong>on</strong>, <strong>the</strong>y are not<br />

indicating that <strong>the</strong>y abide by Biblically based laws;<br />

or that <strong>the</strong>y serve God with all of <strong>the</strong>ir heart, soul,<br />

and mind; or even that <strong>the</strong>y acknowledge God to be<br />

<strong>the</strong> supreme, eternal God. The majority of <strong>the</strong>m<br />

would say that <strong>the</strong>y are "Christians" because <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

"morally and ethically good" and because <strong>the</strong>y do<br />

not subscribe to any lifestyle of unlawful c<strong>on</strong>duct (in<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir interpretati<strong>on</strong>).<br />

This is indicati<strong>on</strong> that our society has succumbed to<br />

<strong>the</strong> "postmodernist illusi<strong>on</strong>" and in so doing <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

redefining <strong>the</strong> root meaning of Christianity, <strong>the</strong>reby<br />

placing <strong>the</strong>mselves comfortably in <strong>the</strong> category<br />

of "good" pers<strong>on</strong>s. Christianity has become a<br />

weak, watered-down c<strong>on</strong>cept, whereas it should be<br />

defended with <strong>the</strong> utmost tenacity and c<strong>on</strong>victi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

True Christianity does not accept less than what God<br />

demands - whe<strong>the</strong>r it is in <strong>the</strong> home and family, <strong>the</strong><br />

civil government, or educati<strong>on</strong>. The Bible applies to<br />

all aspec<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> and areas of life.<br />

However, over <strong>the</strong> course of time, man has<br />

introduced many untruths into his reas<strong>on</strong>ing and<br />

interpretati<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> Bible. Even now with new<br />

versi<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> Bible, we see <strong>the</strong> bent toward<br />

c<strong>on</strong>temporary language and <strong>the</strong> progressive removal<br />

from <strong>the</strong> original language of <strong>the</strong> Bible. Tex<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

which were emphatically written or which used par<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

of speech within a certain c<strong>on</strong>text have had <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

meanings changed due to a more vague interpretati<strong>on</strong><br />

of <strong>the</strong> tex<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> or a misc<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> scholars who<br />

i<br />

write <strong>the</strong> newer versi<strong>on</strong>s. This brings about a great divisi<strong>on</strong><br />

within <strong>the</strong> Christian church because of <strong>the</strong> errant teachings<br />

derived from incorrect interpretati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The Christian faith, which many have devoted <strong>the</strong>ir lives<br />

to and died for, lacks i<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> propensity to prick <strong>the</strong> reader's<br />

c<strong>on</strong>science because it is now written in words that give<br />

way to <strong>the</strong> nuances of a lackadaisical society. The Word<br />

of God has been reduced to a lovely guide for moralis<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

and an interesting interpretati<strong>on</strong> of stories, which some<br />

choose to believe and o<strong>the</strong>rs relate to as fairy tales. Religious<br />

leaders have stripped <strong>the</strong> Bible of i<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> claims of inspirati<strong>on</strong><br />

and inerrancy and have caused many to stray in <strong>the</strong> faith<br />

because of <strong>the</strong>ir misguided <strong>the</strong>ological presuppositi<strong>on</strong>s.<br />

Postrnodernism with i<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> anti-foundati<strong>on</strong>al approach has<br />

reduced <strong>the</strong> church to a point of a "like" or "dislike"<br />

mentality. People will choose a church because of i<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

appeal, not from <strong>the</strong> spiritual standpoint, but from an<br />

emoti<strong>on</strong>al and physical fulfillment. They can choose<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r or not <strong>the</strong>y wish to accept all or part of <strong>the</strong> Bible;<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y agree with <strong>the</strong> tene<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> of faith; whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y<br />

want to believe that a place called Hell exist. All of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

are acceptable behaviors and choices for <strong>the</strong> pers<strong>on</strong> in <strong>the</strong><br />

postmodern church. The pers<strong>on</strong> who desires not to accept<br />

reality and <strong>the</strong> truths of <strong>the</strong> Bible, has <strong>the</strong> choice to deny<br />

that it even exis<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

Rethinking Educati<strong>on</strong><br />

Al<strong>on</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> gradual process of governmental<br />

interference in <strong>the</strong> raising of children has come <strong>the</strong><br />

deviati<strong>on</strong> of children's educati<strong>on</strong>al means. In <strong>the</strong> 1800s and<br />

early 1900s, much of a child's educati<strong>on</strong> and development<br />

were m<strong>on</strong>itored through <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r and mo<strong>the</strong>r. Children<br />

who had <strong>the</strong> luxury of attending school, did so for shorter<br />

periods of time during <strong>the</strong> day due <strong>the</strong> necessity of<br />

work in <strong>the</strong> home and <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> farms. Even <strong>the</strong> society's<br />

elite would hire tutors and children were more privately<br />

educated. Enter <strong>the</strong> government ... "Every government,<br />

regardless of i<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> political bent, understands that <strong>the</strong> means<br />

to c<strong>on</strong>trolling i<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> populati<strong>on</strong> is through <strong>the</strong> educati<strong>on</strong><br />

of i<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g>' youth, regardless of whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> stated desired<br />

outcome is peace, happiness, and equality, or dominati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

subjugati<strong>on</strong>, and filial obedience." (Osberg) Taking his<br />

cue from <strong>the</strong> likes of Marx and Hitler, John Dewey, whom<br />

many view as <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> American "progressive"<br />

educati<strong>on</strong>al system, said that public schools should "take<br />

an active part in determining <strong>the</strong> social order of <strong>the</strong> future<br />

as <strong>the</strong> teachers align <strong>the</strong>mselves with <strong>the</strong> forces making for<br />

social c<strong>on</strong>trol of ec<strong>on</strong>omic forces ... " This statement is in<br />

alignment with <strong>on</strong>e issued by <strong>the</strong> United States Commissi<strong>on</strong><br />

of Mental Health and Children, which said "<strong>the</strong> school<br />

as <strong>the</strong> major socializing agency in <strong>the</strong> community must<br />

assume a direct resp<strong>on</strong>sibility for <strong>the</strong> attitudes and values<br />

of child development." Bringing us up to current day policy<br />

in Washingt<strong>on</strong> state, <strong>the</strong> brochure entitled Improving Stlldent<br />

Peiformallce: A Comprehellsive, It/tegrated Proposal Issl/ed by <strong>the</strong><br />

Governor} Cotlnseloll Edllcati<strong>on</strong>al Reform clearly states:<br />

Postmodemislll: I<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> Effec<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> 011 <strong>the</strong> <strong>Family</strong><br />

The missi<strong>on</strong> of Washingt<strong>on</strong>'s K-12 educati<strong>on</strong> system<br />

is to enable people to be resp<strong>on</strong>sible citizens, to<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tribute to <strong>the</strong>ir own ec<strong>on</strong>omic well-being, and to<br />

that of <strong>the</strong>ir families and communities and to enjoy<br />

productive lives. To <strong>the</strong>se ends, schools, toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

with paren<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> and communities will ensure that all<br />

studen<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> develop <strong>the</strong> knowledge, skills and attributes<br />

essential to functi<strong>on</strong> effectively, and lead successful<br />

lives. (GCERFF1992)2<br />

Public educati<strong>on</strong>, funded by taxpayers through <strong>the</strong> federal<br />

government, has taken i<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> limi<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> to <strong>the</strong> extreme. Due<br />

to o<strong>the</strong>r areas of tlle family which have been adversely<br />

effected by <strong>the</strong> postmodern culture, milli<strong>on</strong>s of American<br />

children are forced into <strong>the</strong> public educati<strong>on</strong> system at<br />

an early age (some children as young as 6 m<strong>on</strong>ths old)<br />

i.e. HeadStart Program. This and o<strong>the</strong>r programs are<br />

operated by federal and state authorities and are positively<br />

described to <strong>the</strong> unsuspecting citizen as a way to curb <strong>the</strong><br />

malnourished and poverty-stricken child who would not<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rwise have a chance, save <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>e that <strong>the</strong> government<br />

is handing to <strong>the</strong>m. In <strong>the</strong> name of <strong>the</strong> child, government<br />

has found a foothold in <strong>the</strong> family structure that has led to<br />

<strong>the</strong> destructi<strong>on</strong> and compromise of thf! family as God has<br />

intended it to be. State after state have adopted laws and<br />

measures to aggressively pursue <strong>the</strong> children of our nati<strong>on</strong><br />

determining it to be in <strong>the</strong> best interest of <strong>the</strong> child if<br />

agencies invade <strong>the</strong> family through home-based visi<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> and<br />

services for families <strong>the</strong>y believe to be "at risk of abuse<br />

or neglect." The problem is: "There is no legal statutory<br />

definiti<strong>on</strong> of 'at risk.' Use of <strong>the</strong> term 'at risk' amoun<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> to a<br />

blank check for interventi<strong>on</strong> in <strong>the</strong> home by <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>rapeutic<br />

state," says Roy M. Hans<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> California Child and<br />

<strong>Family</strong> Protecti<strong>on</strong> Associati<strong>on</strong>. 3<br />

This and o<strong>the</strong>r issues arise from those who would oppose<br />

such interacti<strong>on</strong> between government and family; however,<br />

<strong>the</strong> Laws c<strong>on</strong>tinually weigh in favor of <strong>the</strong> state, leaving<br />

less authority to a child's paren<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Thus <strong>the</strong>se children as<br />

<strong>the</strong>y mature c<strong>on</strong>tinue to look to <strong>the</strong> government as <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

source of aid not <strong>on</strong>ly for <strong>the</strong>ir academic needs, but also<br />

to educate <strong>the</strong>m in family planning (planned Parenthood),<br />

determining sexual orientati<strong>on</strong> (support groups and<br />

various agencies across <strong>the</strong> US), ec<strong>on</strong>omic and financial<br />

resp<strong>on</strong>sibility (Welfare), etc. There has hardly been a missed<br />

opportunity for <strong>the</strong> state to transmit <strong>the</strong> fact that it-not<br />

paren<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g>-should be seen as <strong>the</strong> provider. The role of <strong>the</strong><br />

school has been expanded accordingly through such ploys<br />

as school-based clinics, more sex educati<strong>on</strong> taught ou<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g>ide<br />

<strong>the</strong> home, school breakfas<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g>, a push for l<strong>on</strong>ger hours and<br />

more days in school, extra activities in school buildings, etc.<br />

Nati<strong>on</strong>al service, a state versi<strong>on</strong> of which is mandatory for<br />

graduati<strong>on</strong> from public high school in Maryland, falls into<br />

this framework as well. Again, <strong>the</strong>re is little new under <strong>the</strong><br />

sun. Here was an analogous law in Nazi Germany:

'.:,'.<br />

Nati<strong>on</strong>al Labor Service is a service of h<strong>on</strong>or to <strong>the</strong><br />

German Reich. All young people of both sexes are<br />

obliged to serve <strong>the</strong>ir country in <strong>the</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Labor<br />

Service. The functi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Service is to inculcate<br />

in <strong>the</strong> German youth a community spirit and a true<br />

c<strong>on</strong>cept of <strong>the</strong> dignity of work, and above all, a proper<br />

respect for manual labor. To <strong>the</strong> Nati<strong>on</strong>al Labor<br />

Service is allotted <strong>the</strong> task of carrying out work for <strong>the</strong><br />

good of <strong>the</strong> whole community."4<br />

Devaluing Traditi<strong>on</strong><br />

Until <strong>the</strong> mid-1900s, it was an unlikely noti<strong>on</strong> to find a<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r working ou<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g>ide of <strong>the</strong> family home. Traditi<strong>on</strong>ally,<br />

women were left to work in <strong>the</strong> home tending to <strong>the</strong><br />

multitude of tasks that were necessary to keep <strong>the</strong> home<br />

in working order and organized. The tasks involved were<br />

nei<strong>the</strong>r demeaning to <strong>the</strong> intelligence of <strong>the</strong> woman nor<br />

was <strong>the</strong> work regarded as menial resp<strong>on</strong>sibilities. Women<br />

were vital to <strong>the</strong> homelife in <strong>the</strong>ir organizati<strong>on</strong>, accounting,<br />

nursing, educati<strong>on</strong>al and epicurean expertise, etc. The<br />

family structure was passed from generati<strong>on</strong> to generati<strong>on</strong><br />

as skills and workmanship were taught to <strong>the</strong> young boys<br />

and girls of <strong>the</strong> family. Mo<strong>the</strong>rs and fa<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

trained <strong>the</strong>ir daughters and s<strong>on</strong>s respectively,<br />

so that <strong>on</strong>e day <strong>the</strong> children would be<br />

capable of handling <strong>the</strong> affairs of <strong>the</strong>ir own<br />

homes.<br />

Society has weakened <strong>the</strong> woman's ability<br />

to influence her children to such an extent.<br />

The pressures of living <strong>the</strong> American<br />

dream have driven families to choose for<br />

<strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r to seek employment ou<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g>ide of<br />

<strong>the</strong> home. The heavy ec<strong>on</strong>omic burden of<br />

providing for <strong>the</strong> ever-increasing demands<br />

of a glutt<strong>on</strong>ous society has c<strong>on</strong>tinued to<br />

stress to day's households. <strong>Family</strong> life has been altered as a<br />

whole; daycare and pre-school classes take <strong>the</strong> place of <strong>the</strong><br />

early childhood development that <strong>on</strong>ce took place in <strong>the</strong><br />

home. Government stepped in to encourage <strong>the</strong> working<br />

mo<strong>the</strong>r by providing various programs, while o<strong>the</strong>r families<br />

opted for <strong>the</strong> "latch-key" child who came home to an<br />

empty house. The 1980s and 90s brought about an air of<br />

c<strong>on</strong>demnati<strong>on</strong> and revile for <strong>the</strong> woman who chose to be<br />

a stay-at-home mom, because she was not working her way<br />

up <strong>the</strong> corporate ladder. Little did <strong>the</strong> oppositi<strong>on</strong> realize<br />

that <strong>the</strong> mom who stayed at home was already a CEO of<br />

her "corporati<strong>on</strong>"!<br />

The family has received ano<strong>the</strong>r blow due to <strong>the</strong><br />

opportunities that <strong>the</strong> workplace holds for <strong>the</strong> woman who<br />

is ambitious, competitive, and who seeks to be <strong>on</strong> even<br />

playing ground with men. Women's righ<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> movemen<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

have sought to disintegrate <strong>the</strong> home fur<strong>the</strong>r through<br />

activism and role-reversal. "House husbands" have become<br />

increasingly acceptable in our society. If women have <strong>the</strong><br />

right to work ou<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g>ide of <strong>the</strong> home, so men have <strong>the</strong> right to<br />

Al<strong>on</strong>g with <strong>the</strong> unfavorable pers<strong>on</strong>al effec<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

working mo<strong>the</strong>r (stress, fatigue, health problems) comes<br />

<strong>the</strong> unraveling of <strong>the</strong> threads of family life. Many children<br />

do not experience having a mo<strong>the</strong>r who is available to<br />

prepare home cooked meals, or who can take <strong>the</strong> time to<br />

teach <strong>the</strong>ir daughters to sew; or who can play ball with<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir s<strong>on</strong>s. Society has replaced <strong>the</strong>se relics with <strong>the</strong> new,<br />

ever-increasing speed of <strong>the</strong> "have it NOW" generati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The family evening is now described as: dinnertime is <strong>the</strong><br />

three-minute visit to <strong>the</strong> McD<strong>on</strong>ald's drive-thru; <strong>on</strong> to take<br />

Johnny to <strong>the</strong> Little League baseball game, or whichever<br />

sport is in seas<strong>on</strong>; <strong>on</strong> to take Susie to <strong>the</strong> piano less<strong>on</strong>, or<br />

whichever particular instrument she is learning this year;<br />

<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> school paren<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> associati<strong>on</strong> meeting; and <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong><br />

circular drive to ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> children up and take <strong>the</strong>m home.<br />

Where, up<strong>on</strong> arrival, <strong>the</strong>re is homework to be completed;<br />

<strong>the</strong> bills to be prepared for mailing; <strong>the</strong> dog<br />

to be walked; and <strong>the</strong> favorite late night<br />

TV show to be watched before every<strong>on</strong>e<br />

collapses in exhausti<strong>on</strong>. This descripti<strong>on</strong><br />

is not far from <strong>the</strong> truth for <strong>the</strong> majority<br />

of homes. In <strong>the</strong> current days of <strong>the</strong><br />

perpetual demands for entertainment and<br />

instant gratificati<strong>on</strong>, children are learning<br />

to manipulate <strong>the</strong>ir paren<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g>' schedule<br />

and persist in doing every activity that is<br />

imaginable. Paren<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> oblige <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

out of guilt that <strong>the</strong>ir children may suffer<br />

some mental defect if <strong>the</strong>y d<strong>on</strong>'t "keep<br />

up with <strong>the</strong> J<strong>on</strong>es's." Paren<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> and children<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly communicate in <strong>the</strong> car <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> way to whatever<br />

activity is demanding <strong>the</strong>ir attenti<strong>on</strong> at that particular time.<br />

Additi<strong>on</strong>ally, <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>cep<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> of <strong>the</strong> cellular ph<strong>on</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> laptop<br />

computer, <strong>the</strong> perpetually intrusive TV installed in presentday<br />

vehicles to allow for <strong>the</strong> paren<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> solitude, and <strong>the</strong> CD<br />

player complete with headph<strong>on</strong>es so every<strong>on</strong>e can have<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir choice of entertainment without invading o<strong>the</strong>rs' ears,<br />

have wreaked havoc <strong>on</strong> parent-child communicati<strong>on</strong> even<br />

during commute time.<br />

Dec<strong>on</strong>structing Marriage<br />

With <strong>the</strong> ever-increasing ease of obtaining divorces through<br />

any American court system, marriage has become as<br />

disposable as refuse. Divorce has run rampant in a society<br />

that chooses at will to interrupt <strong>the</strong> Biblical design of <strong>the</strong><br />

family. Why should a couple worry if ten years after <strong>the</strong>y<br />

have taken <strong>the</strong>ir marriage vows <strong>the</strong>y decide <strong>the</strong>y do not wish<br />

to c<strong>on</strong>tinue facing each o<strong>the</strong>r every morning? Divorce has<br />

become <strong>the</strong> answer for too many couples in <strong>the</strong> postmodern<br />

culture who decide that <strong>the</strong>y want something new. There is<br />

nothing to stop <strong>the</strong>m from filing papers with a court officer,<br />

<strong>the</strong> COUNSEL of CHALCEDON 29

paying exorbitant lawyers fees, arguing over who ge<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

what possessi<strong>on</strong>s and children, and shredding every piece<br />

of stability that <strong>the</strong>ir children have ever known. Divorce<br />

has fragmented family ties, bringing with it bitterness,<br />

resentment, and unhappiness to many children who are<br />

i<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> victims. Psychiatris<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g>' and psychologis<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g>' offices are<br />

full of children who have been ordered by <strong>the</strong> cour<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> to<br />

undergo treatment for <strong>the</strong> depressi<strong>on</strong>, anger, and hostility<br />

that raves within <strong>the</strong>m due to <strong>the</strong> detrimental effec<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> of<br />

losing <strong>the</strong>ir paren<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> in this legal war. Children are forced<br />

to become adul<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> before <strong>the</strong>ir time due to <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tinual<br />

decisi<strong>on</strong>s that <strong>the</strong>y are faced with as a result of parental<br />

divorces. They lose <strong>the</strong>ir innocence and <strong>the</strong>ir childhood,<br />

as <strong>the</strong>y become locked into a life of living with <strong>on</strong>e parent,<br />

while occasi<strong>on</strong>ally visiting <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>on</strong> special days set-up<br />

going from <strong>on</strong>e parent to <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r, receiving <strong>the</strong> mental<br />

burden that each parent chooses to release up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Divorce destroys <strong>the</strong> power of <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r-mo<strong>the</strong>r-child<br />

child using <strong>on</strong>e method, while <strong>the</strong> parent<br />

living ou<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g>ide of <strong>the</strong> home chooses a less<br />

aggressive method of discipline. Enter<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r area of c<strong>on</strong>fusi<strong>on</strong> for <strong>the</strong> child.<br />

Children must have a c<strong>on</strong>tinually structured<br />

path of correcti<strong>on</strong>. Variance of any kind<br />

in this area leads not <strong>on</strong>ly to c<strong>on</strong>fusi<strong>on</strong>, but<br />

also to hostility and frustrati<strong>on</strong> for both <strong>the</strong><br />

child and parent.<br />

Marriage was designed by God to be<br />

<strong>the</strong> foundati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> home. When <strong>the</strong><br />

foundati<strong>on</strong> is not solidly built up<strong>on</strong> faith and trust in God<br />

and <strong>on</strong>e ano<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> walls will not withstand <strong>the</strong> blows that<br />

forcefully beat against <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Society c<strong>on</strong>tinually bea<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> against <strong>the</strong> original structure<br />

of marriage. C<strong>on</strong>temporary definiti<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> family<br />

have been created by a government which hastens <strong>the</strong><br />

destructi<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> family through social re-definiti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

"Every successful society has been predicated up<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al "nuclear" family, which is organized around<br />

a man and a woman who are joined in legal wedlock.<br />

However, powerful interes<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> seek to instituti<strong>on</strong>alize<br />

"alternative" models of <strong>the</strong> family ... [The Clevelandbased<br />

Marriage was<br />

overwhelming barrage of attacks made against <strong>the</strong> family<br />

in postmodern society. Almost daily <strong>the</strong> government at<br />

federal and local levels is finding new ways of instilling i<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

postmodern agenda in <strong>the</strong> heart of society, causing fur<strong>the</strong>r<br />

demise to <strong>the</strong> home.<br />

"Christianity has been excommunicated from <strong>the</strong> culture<br />

at large - systematically excluded from <strong>the</strong> schools,<br />

<strong>the</strong> intellectual establishment, and <strong>the</strong> media. The<br />

establishment of Christian schools, publishers, ar<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> groups,<br />

broadcasters, businesses, and so <strong>on</strong> may be <strong>on</strong>e of <strong>the</strong><br />

great achievemen<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> of <strong>the</strong> twentieth-century church.<br />

As postmodernist pressures intensify, having counter<br />

instituti<strong>on</strong>s already in place may prove invaluable for<br />

Christians to stage an effective resistance."6<br />

There is a story that <strong>the</strong> legendary Sherlock Holmes and his<br />

sidekick, Dr. Wa<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>on</strong>, went camping <strong>on</strong>e night to get away<br />

from it all after solving a particularly difficult case. In <strong>the</strong><br />

middle of <strong>the</strong> night, Holmes shook Dr. Wa<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>on</strong> awake.<br />

"Look up at <strong>the</strong> sky, Dr. Wa<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>on</strong>. Tell me, what do you<br />

see?" he asked.<br />

Looking up briefly, Dr. Wa<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>on</strong> groggily<br />

answered, "I see <strong>the</strong> stars and <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>on</strong>."<br />

As Wa<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>on</strong> started to lie back down, an<br />

agitated Holmes demanded, ''And, my dear<br />

man, what does that mean?"<br />

A now equally agitated Dr. Wa<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>on</strong><br />

replied, "I suppose it means that this is an<br />

excepti<strong>on</strong>ally clear night."<br />

"No, no, no," exclaimed Holmes<br />

impatiently, "It means that some<strong>on</strong>e has stolen our tent!"7<br />

What, <strong>the</strong>n, should be <strong>the</strong> resp<strong>on</strong>se of those who see this<br />

calamity and who accept <strong>the</strong> truths of <strong>the</strong> Bible to be <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly guide? Unequivocally, <strong>the</strong> Christian reacti<strong>on</strong> should<br />

be <strong>on</strong>e of resolve; resolve to seek to live a life of example,<br />

<strong>on</strong>e of uncompromising principles and unaltered Biblical<br />

standard. God's Word has clearly established <strong>the</strong> role of<br />

parent-child relati<strong>on</strong>ships and how He will prosper and<br />

protect those who live within His plan (psalm 127 & 128).<br />

It is imperative for <strong>the</strong> Christian man and woman who are<br />

joined in marriage to agree that <strong>the</strong>y will bring up <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

children in <strong>the</strong> nurture and adm<strong>on</strong>iti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> Lord.<br />

As R.J. Rushdo<strong>on</strong>y noted in his Institutes 0/ Biblical Lmv:<br />

The family is not <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>the</strong> first envir<strong>on</strong>ment of <strong>the</strong><br />

child, it is also his first school, where he receives his<br />

basic educati<strong>on</strong>; his first church, where he is taught his<br />

first and foundati<strong>on</strong>al less<strong>on</strong>s c<strong>on</strong>cerning God and life;<br />

his first state, where he learns <strong>the</strong> elemen<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> of law and<br />

order and obeys <strong>the</strong>m; and his first vocati<strong>on</strong> where <strong>the</strong>

child is given work to do, and resp<strong>on</strong>sibilities in terms<br />

of it. The essential world for a small child is <strong>the</strong> family,<br />

his fa<strong>the</strong>r and mo<strong>the</strong>r in particular. (192)<br />

When Christ came to earth, He set up His kingdom which<br />

gave Him <strong>the</strong> right to domini<strong>on</strong>. The Christian lives<br />

with <strong>the</strong> knowledge that Christ has come to overthrow all<br />

corrupt government and rule. The kingdoms of <strong>the</strong> earth<br />

have become <strong>the</strong> kingdom of our Lord! The Christian has<br />

c<strong>on</strong>fidence that <strong>the</strong> Lord reigns triumphantly and that any<br />

government and authority, set up for <strong>the</strong> glory of man, will<br />

be brought to nothing.<br />

With this knowledge, <strong>the</strong> Christian has <strong>the</strong> obligati<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>n<br />

to fulfill <strong>the</strong> commands of <strong>the</strong> Lord given in Genesis 1 to<br />

"be fruitful and multiply and fill <strong>the</strong> earth" with <strong>the</strong> seed of<br />

righteousness. Never should <strong>the</strong> Christian back down when<br />

c<strong>on</strong>fr<strong>on</strong>ted with <strong>the</strong> corrupt laws brought up<strong>on</strong> him by a<br />

crooked state. On <strong>the</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trary, he should rest <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> faith<br />

that he has in Christ and <strong>the</strong> promise that "righteousness<br />

exal<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> a nati<strong>on</strong> ... "(proverbs 14:34). The tent, Detective<br />

Holmes, is still in place! It is <strong>the</strong> duty of Christian men and<br />

women to see that Biblical rule exis<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> in <strong>the</strong>ir homes and<br />

families.<br />

As Gene Veith pu<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> it:<br />

Certainly, <strong>the</strong> turmoil of <strong>the</strong> present time is characteristic<br />

of a transiti<strong>on</strong> from <strong>on</strong>e epoch [modernism] to <strong>the</strong> next<br />

[postmodernism]. Whe<strong>the</strong>r Christianity will <strong>on</strong>ce again<br />

exert i<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> influence <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> culture, or whe<strong>the</strong>r Christianity<br />

will become fur<strong>the</strong>r marginalized in <strong>the</strong> twenty-first<br />

century, Christians must pay close attenti<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> signs<br />

of <strong>the</strong> times.<br />

In doing so, <strong>the</strong>y will see that Biblical faith has survived<br />

every assault, even persecuti<strong>on</strong>, and has proven relevant<br />

to every age despite attemp<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g> to silence or to change i<str<strong>on</strong>g>ts</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

message. C<strong>on</strong>versely, each humanly devised worldview<br />

has proven inadequate and has been replaced by yet<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r set of assumpti<strong>on</strong>s. As modernism gives way to<br />

postrnodernism, and as <strong>the</strong> twentieth century gives way<br />

to <strong>the</strong> twenty-first century (if Christ delays His coming),<br />

Christians will discover even more reas<strong>on</strong>s to hold fast<br />

to <strong>the</strong> Word of God. 8<br />
