Designed for children to have access to a variety of supplies allowing them to create at their<br />

own pace, through experimentation, with limited, but targeted direction. We will use many<br />

everyday items and transform them into works of art! There will be a few set projects with a<br />

lot of ideas and a lot of materials to work with. Children will be allowed to be creative each in<br />

their own way – no “same project” artwork here! We will offer the pottery wheel every day<br />

along with clay hand building, decoupage, silk painting, glass fusing and much more. Come<br />

for multiple weeks and never do the same project twice! A $40 materials fee is due to instructor<br />

Paint great new bisque pieces, learn to use clay, and make pottery of your own design.<br />

Learn techniques—lace, stamping, sponging, bubbles! Explore the world of mosaics where<br />

we learn that nothing old or broken has to be thrown away. Bring in grandmom’s old china<br />

mug from home and turn it into a piece of treasure you could even pass down in the family!<br />

Draw and paint and put together many different materials to make all kinds of fun<br />

artwork-exercising your imagination! Take some large, stiff, bright paper; cut and<br />

fold it to make a crazy giant bird mask, then deck it out with sequins and feathers;<br />

make modeling clay turtles and hedgehogs and then make a diorama world for<br />

them to live in; use colored cellophane and little sparkly beads to make window<br />

ornaments and see the light glow beautifully through them! Age: 6-11. A $10 material<br />

safety. In order to operate a motor boat or personal watercraft, persons born<br />

after July 1, 1972 are required by MD law to successfully complete this certification<br />

course. Class includes a review of chart reading, course plotting, marlinspike (knot<br />

tying). Age: all (under 13 must be accompanied by a paying adult). You must be<br />

So much has happened in Oz before Dorothy dropped in!<br />

Long before that girl from Kansas arrives in Munchkin land,<br />

two other girls meet in the Land of Oz. One-born with emerald<br />

green skin-is smart, fiery, and misunderstood; the other is<br />

beautiful, ambitious, and very popular. How these two<br />

unlikely friends end up as the Wicked Witch of the West and<br />

Glinda the Good Witch makes for the most spellbinding musical<br />

in years. The bus will drop you off in front of the Gershwin<br />

Theatre at approximately 11:30am. You are free until your<br />

2pm matinee show. Immediately after the show, board your<br />

waiting motor coach for the return trip to Westminster. Includes orchestra seat,<br />

Hashawha and Bear Branch Nature Center are located just north of<br />

Westminster, off Rt. 97 at 300 John Owings Road. The Nature Center<br />

is open year round. Hours of operation are Wednesday-Saturday<br />

11am-5pm, and Sunday 12pm-5pm. The Nature Center staff can be<br />

contacted by phone or email bbnc@carr.org. All Nature Center programs<br />

require pre-registration, unless otherwise noted. Groups MUST<br />

schedule programs directly with the Nature Center.<br />

Hashawha’s trails are open to the public from dawn until dusk 365<br />

days a year. Parking is only available at Lake Hashawha or Bear<br />

Branch Nature Center. There is no entrance fee for the park.<br />

PLEASE NOTE: The Hashawha Environmental Facility is not open to<br />

the public except through reservation. Please do not enter the Hashawha<br />

gates or the posted restricted areas. For more information<br />

about group rentals of the facility, contact the Hashawha staff at 410-<br />

386-3560 or Hashawha@carr.org.<br />

In case of inclement weather… should inclement weather be in the<br />

forecast, please call the Nature Center before coming to your program<br />

to check and see if it has been cancelled or postponed. Note that if<br />

Join as we head to Jug Bay on the Patuxent River to spend the day<br />

learning all about the “fish hawk” with Naturalist, Greg Kearns. For<br />

over 20 years, Greg has banded osprey chicks each spring in the Chesapeake<br />

region. During this incredible trip, you will have the chance to<br />

get up close and personal with these birds, as well as help collect and<br />

record important banding data. Bring water, hat/sunglasses, sunscreen,<br />

The Brandywine River flows through some very beautiful countryside located<br />

in historic Brandywine valley of Pennsylvania and Northern Delaware,<br />

home to many famous people throughout history. Our paddle will<br />

take us through the grounds of the famous artist N.C. Wyeth and one of the<br />

DuPont estates. We will stop along the way at a beautiful pebbled beach to<br />

have a picnic lunch of fried chicken, potato salad, and assorted snacks<br />

(provided) and to rest as well as enjoy the scenery. The trip leader is the<br />

former naturalist of Brandywine Creek State Park and will be able to provide<br />

interesting facts about the history and scenery along the way. We will<br />

place 2 people per canoe (provided). Age: 15-adult. Meet at Piney Run<br />

Boat Trailer Parking Lot.<br />

Piney Run. There will be a special animal show after the feast, where you<br />

Discover how scientists find, identify, and survey our special coldblooded<br />

ponds of Piney Run for Maryland’s favorite snakes, turtles, frogs, salamanders<br />

and more! Bring your water bottles and get ready for an adventurous<br />

for a real survey being done by the Maryland Amphibian and Reptile<br />

Find out how animals use camouflage to survive. Whether they are covered<br />

in scales, fur, or feathers, most animals use camouflage in some shape or<br />

form. Dress in your own camouflage gear for a special game of hide-and<br />

go-seek in our shady pine forest. Learn about the advantages and disadvantages<br />

of camouflage, while having a great time getting dirty in the<br />

woods. Age: 5-9.<br />

How clean is the water you drink? Learn how to test for water quality and<br />

how our everyday actions affect the Chesapeake Bay. While we take a hike<br />

around the park, we’ll discuss erosion and gain a better understanding of<br />

the benefits of wetlands. We will also talk about the health of the Chesapeake<br />

Bay. Learn how to do your part to help get the Bay healthy and<br />

clean, so that everyone and everything can enjoy this special resource we<br />

call home. Don’t forget your water bottles and make sure to dress for rain<br />

or shine. Age: 9-adult.<br />

The Nature Center’s live animal collection requires constant<br />

care. Animals in need of sponsors include birds of prey,<br />

BIRTHDAY PARTIES:<br />

Looking for a wild time on your birthday? Nature Center<br />

birthdays include the use of the meeting room and a 45 minute<br />

naturalist-led program. Fee is $100; set-up and clean-up are<br />

the responsibility of the scheduling parent.<br />

SCOUT PROGRAMS:<br />

Cub, Boy, and Girl Scout programs available - call to schedule<br />

a program to work on a specific badge or achievement. Fee of<br />

$2/person or minimum $25 applies for <strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong> groups;<br />

$3/person or $50 minimum applies for out of county groups.<br />

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CLASSES<br />

AND FIELD TRIPS:<br />

Call the Nature Center to schedule a program - public, private<br />

Center field trips or to have a naturalist come to your<br />

Lunch with the Critters! What do turtles eat? Who is an omnivore?<br />

BALTIMORE WOMEN’S CLASSIC<br />

5K TRAINING PROGRAM<br />

Presented by Charm City Run, this 8-week program is designed to<br />

prepare runners/walkers of all ability levels for The 2011 New Balance<br />

Baltimore Women’s Classic 5K. Fun, inexpensive and supportive<br />

workouts that encourage women to embark on a lifelong<br />

program of fitness. Additionally, every week we will l have speakers<br />

on a variety of fitness and nutrition related topics.<br />

Training is broken into 4 groups (beginner & intermediate walkers<br />

and runners) depending on your own goals and physical condition.<br />

Whether you have yet to start a walking program or are a seasoned<br />

runner looking to improve your race time, one of our groups will be<br />

right for you. Our coaches will help you determine the best group<br />

for you and you are also welcome to change groups at any time<br />

during the program based on your progress or fitness level.<br />

Summer Day Camps<br />

Day Camp is held at Westminster City Park and is designed for children 6-<br />

12 years. Children will have loads of fun playing games and sports, making<br />

crafts, going on field trips and swimming at the Westminster Municipal<br />

We offer camp during all full weeks that <strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong> Schools are out of<br />

session for the summer. The cost is $115 per week. AM and PM care is also<br />

Tot Camp is held at in the Community Building at the Westminster<br />

REFUND POLICY<br />

Classes: Requests for full refunds must be received by<br />

phone at our office at least 10 days prior to the starting date<br />

of the course. Session refunds may be given for withdrawal<br />

requests made after that date at the discretion of Recreation<br />

and Parks. No refunds will be issued after two sessions. No<br />

refunds will be issued for courses meeting only one or two<br />

sessions.<br />

Bus Trips: Requests for full refunds must be received by<br />

phone/in person at least 1 month prior to the date of the trip<br />

unless there is a specific date listed in the course description.<br />

After the deadline has passed, there will be NO refunds and<br />

any tickets purchased are the property of the registrant.<br />

CANCELLATION POLICY: <strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong> Recreation<br />

and Parks reserves the right to cancel any course at its<br />

discretion. In case of cancellation, a full refund will be given<br />

within 10-14 business days.<br />

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY: When <strong>Carroll</strong><br />

<strong>County</strong> Public Schools are closed or close early due to<br />

weather or other emergency conditions, <strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong> Recreation<br />

& Parks programs are canceled for that day. For<br />

weekend/non-school days, once the Snow Emergency Plan<br />

is in effect for <strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong>, no Recreation & Parks activities<br />

Should the “Plan” be lifted any time during that day, all<br />

activities are still canceled for the remainder of that day.<br />

& Parks can provide limited financial assistance to families<br />
