Venture outside and join Dave Harvey of the <strong>Carroll</strong> <strong>County</strong> Bird Club, for<br />
a morning bird walk. Search for the many different types of songbirds,<br />
waterfowl, raptors, and woodpeckers that inhabit Piney Run Park. Beginning<br />
birders are welcome. We suggest bringing along binoculars and field<br />
guides. Dress for the weather since walks will occur in both rain or shine.<br />
Age: 10-adult. Meet at the PRNC front entrance.<br />

Sign up for a stroll through the woods of Piney Run to learn all about our<br />
underappreciated forest friends, “THE DECOMPOSERS!” We will learn<br />
about the life cycle of a tree and play a super-fun game to see what wiggly<br />
things we can discover under fallen logs, in rotten stumps, and by digging<br />
in the dirt! Age: 5-9.<br />

A NIGHT UNDER THE STARS CAMPOUT<br />

Join us for a fun-filled night of exploration as we study the wonders of the<br />
night sky and fall asleep under a blanket of stars. Learn about the different<br />
phases of the moon, how to identify the constellations, and<br />
simply enjoy gazing into outer space. Find out how to be<br />
an eco-friendly camper and how to “leave no trace” while<br />
enjoying the outdoors. Don’t forget your flashlights,<br />
imaginations, or appetites for Ice Cream! Dinner<br />
(hamburgers and hot dogs) and a Continental Breakfast will be provided.<br />
Families must provide own tent and equipment. Age: families.<br />

PADDLE DOWN HISTORIC<br />
BRANDYWINE RIVER<br />

The Brandywine River flows through some very beautiful countryside located<br />
in historic Brandywine valley of Pennsylvania and Northern Delaware,<br />
home to many famous people throughout history. Our paddle will<br />
take us through the grounds of the famous artist N.C. Wyeth and one of the<br />
DuPont estates. We will stop along the way at a beautiful pebbled beach to<br />
have a picnic lunch of fried chicken, potato salad, and assorted snacks<br />
(provided) and to rest as well as enjoy the scenery. The trip leader is the<br />
former naturalist of Brandywine Creek State Park and will be able to provide<br />
interesting facts about the history and scenery along the way. We will<br />
place 2 people per canoe (provided). Age: 15-adult. Meet at Piney Run<br />
Boat Trailer Parking Lot.<br />

CELEBRATE SUMMER AT THE PARK<br />

The warmest season of the year is almost upon us. What goes perfect with<br />
some sunshine? … a PICNIC & Ice Cream!! Bring the whole family to<br />
enjoy a relaxing afternoon under shady trees, and a delicious dinner<br />
(hotdogs/hamburgers/chips/watermelon) with a great view of the lake at<br />
Piney Run. There will be a special animal show after the feast, where you<br />
can meet our favorite animal friends. Age: all.<br />

REPTILE AND AMPHIBIAN SURVEY<br />

Discover how scientists find, identify, and survey our special coldblooded<br />
friends. No log will remain unturned as we scour the forest, streams and<br />
ponds of Piney Run for Maryland’s favorite snakes, turtles, frogs, salamanders<br />
and more! Bring your water bottles and get ready for an adventurous<br />

and educational morning at Piney Run. We will even record our findings<br />
for a real survey being done by the Maryland Amphibian and Reptile<br />
Atlas (MARA). Age: 9-adult.<br />

Find out how animals use camouflage to survive. Whether they are covered<br />
in scales, fur, or feathers, most animals use camouflage in some shape or<br />
form. Dress in your own camouflage gear for a special game of hide-and<br />
go-seek in our shady pine forest. Learn about the advantages and disadvantages<br />
of camouflage, while having a great time getting dirty in the<br />
woods. Age: 5-9.<br />

WATER QUALITY, WETLANDS & THE BAY<br />

How clean is the water you drink? Learn how to test for water quality and<br />
how our everyday actions affect the Chesapeake Bay. While we take a hike<br />
around the park, we’ll discuss erosion and gain a better understanding of<br />
the benefits of wetlands. We will also talk about the health of the Chesapeake<br />
Bay. Learn how to do your part to help get the Bay healthy and<br />
clean, so that everyone and everything can enjoy this special resource we<br />
call home. Don’t forget your water bottles and make sure to dress for rain<br />
or shine. Age: 9-adult.<br />

BACK-TO-SCHOOL CRAFT CELEBRATION<br />

Join us for an end-of-summer celebration! We will make a special<br />
“summer-themed” craft that you can take home, and have delicious<br />
summer-time treat that you can put in your belly, and we’ll wash it all<br />
down with fresh-squeezed lemonade! Craft will be outside (weather<br />
permitting) so don’t forget your sunscreen and water bottles! Age: 3-5.<br />
