Sociologists and anthropologists illuminated the group values and<br />
mentalities that con<strong>di</strong>tion in<strong>di</strong>vidual beliefs.<br />
History writing, ideologically inflected by liberal philosophy, developed<br />
in the shadow ofthe nation-state, and until the twentieth century normally<br />
arrogated to itself the task of justifying the nation's history to its citizens.<br />
The <strong>di</strong>sastrous course of the twentieth century led many historians to<br />
<strong>di</strong>stance themselves from the naive assumptions oftra<strong>di</strong>tional nationalisill,<br />
viewed as responsible for the slaughters of two world wars. Exploring the<br />
labyrinths ofgroup behavior they paid increasing attention to other groups<br />
than political ones. The twentieth century's most fruitful departures in<br />
historical thinking - those, for example ofthe French Annales School and of<br />
the Italian Carlo Ginzburg - have been inspired by the effort to study the<br />
history of collective consciousness in the light of sociological and<br />
anthropological perspectives. This approach, applied frequently to the<br />
me<strong>di</strong>eval and early modern periods, has been dubbed 'the history of<br />
mentalities'. Anal yses of collectivities, however, tended to lose sight of the<br />
in<strong>di</strong>vidual human <strong>di</strong>mension, as always the subject historians could<br />
