Academic Policies<br />
Academic Dismissal and Probation (See Academic Standard 302, 303 and 304.)<br />
Students whose GPA is below 2.0 at the end <strong>of</strong> a semester or term may qualify to continue on probation. (See Academic<br />
Standard 302 (a-c).) If a <strong>student</strong> does not qualify to continue on probation under Standard 302, the <strong>student</strong> will be<br />
academically dismissed.<br />
A <strong>student</strong> who has been academically dismissed may petition to be readmitted for continued study on probation.<br />
(See Academic Standard 303.)<br />
Writing Requirement Policy<br />
After attaining 30 credit hours, each <strong>student</strong> must complete a<br />
supervised, rigorous writing experience prior to graduation. This<br />
requirement may be satisfied by:<br />
• completing a designated course having a rigorous writing<br />
component or a seminar that requires a significant research<br />
paper for the final grade. (Courses and seminars that satisfy the<br />
requirement are designated on each semester's class schedule.)<br />
• a writing submitted by members <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Cumberland</strong> <strong>Law</strong> Review<br />
or the American Journal <strong>of</strong> Trial Advocacy and certified as<br />
publishable by the respective faculty adviser.<br />
• a paper singled out for recognition in a writing competition<br />
and approved by the associate dean.<br />
• a paper written while enrolled in law school that is published in<br />
a scholarly periodical, journal or treatise, and which is<br />
approved by the associate<br />
dean.<br />
Students must file a standard single-page form, available from law<br />
<strong>student</strong> records, as evidence <strong>of</strong> certification <strong>of</strong> fulfillment <strong>of</strong> this writing<br />
requirement. The form must bear the signature <strong>of</strong> the faculty sponsor<br />
and a warranty <strong>of</strong> compliance with all applicable honor code provisions<br />
signed by the <strong>student</strong>. All forms must be filed with the director <strong>of</strong> law<br />
<strong>student</strong> records by the beginning <strong>of</strong> the final examination period immediately preceding the <strong>student</strong>'s graduation.<br />
The existence and nature <strong>of</strong> this writing requirement shall be appropriately publicized to all current and prospective<br />
<strong>student</strong>s and other appropriate<br />
Individuals outside the <strong>Cumberland</strong> community.<br />
