Health Society
,Years Old
The. Tuberculosis ..and. Health
Society will celebrate its 10th
anniversary at its annual meeting
at noon ThlU'Sday, April, 28
at the Central YWCA in Detroit.
Si~ce ,its founding. the Society"
has grown from a staff of three
people to a. staff of 22. Its services
go into Herman,Kiefer Hospital
and William Maybury Sanatorium
in Northville to aid
tubereulosis patients. Its services
also reach into evfrrY community
and neighborhood in the ~ounty
and city to help citizens improve
the health ot. our people.
With the support ot those who
each buy double bar cross'Christ~
mas Seals, the Society has bought
$22,000worth of X-ray equipment .
to set up :free X-ray. Clinics in ,
Ecorse and, Dearborn. .Through'
small grants it has stimulated
Oakwood, Florence Crlttenton
and Trinity Hospitals to purchase
X-ray equipment. to examine
every patient entering tis hospital
to detect tuberculosis .cases.
Twice in the past ten years the
Society has staffed and maintained
a mobile X-ray bus until
public health departments coold
take them over. The Women's
Committee of the Society pur.'
chased a trailer and later a bus
to house X-ray equipment ..of the
Detroit Department of Health.
Hundreds of patients have'been
returned to useful jobs after they
have left the hospital as a result
of training arranged' by .the TB
and He~lth Society, '
In. 1951-52 the Society mobilized
efforts to provide 335' new .
hospital beds at HerIl'lin Kiefer
Hospital.. These are now fill~d
continually and still some Wayne
County patients must be treated
in sanatorium in nowell IlIld
~olony Club Recipes
Here on our desk, golden and new is the book called "Favorite
Recipes" containing culinai.y favorites of members oi
the Colony Town Club. To us, it j~ the solid evidence of
Mrs. James Merriam Barnes' idea which came to that curly
head of hers over two vears ago. Then it was ask~d her fellow
members to send' their favorite recipes to her. These
were faithfUlly typed and put into a recipe file and given as
• prize at the big' Colony Town Club Fair. (Mrs. Henry
Cr05Sen ~on the recipe file.) "Some day, those will be in a
Barnes remarked at the time. So here is her brain child,
PILFERINGS
OUT OF TOWN
We came upon a story in the New York Times that shot
• whole day out of 'our week, so filled was it with adventure
and wishful thinking. There's a family down on Northport,
L~, t..~e Vramis, who are chucking their successful plant
nursery business and with their four and seven-year-old
daughters are setting forth on the family's 30 foot. ketch to
find a new home somewhere in the West' Indies. The decision
to snip off tried roots was made when, "During the past year,
I iound mystelf tied to a desk and telephone with hired labor
doing all the things I loved best." That was Mr. Vrana speaking.
Said his wife, "I feel there is much more to security, so
called, than a hearth and a home.", Mrs. Vrana's galley ineludes
a coal-burning stove which car.. be used to heat the
interior of the ship, and a two-burner gasoline stove for
quick meals. A twenty-five horsep0!Ver auxiliary engine
pushes the boat at six knots when the winds are unfavorable,
or for navigation in narrow channels. Tired of your desk and
~ '" • II
Then there. was the B r i tis h officer, stationed in the
tropics. He ordered his men to wear shor~ instead of the
:regulation lopgs. Some of the men abused the privileges,
however, forcing the commandant to clarify his order with
this comment: "If shorts are worn any shorter, they will not
be worn any longer!"
