• Founder (and First president) of The NRCGEB (National Research Center for Genetic
Engineering and Biotechnology), Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, Tehran, I.R.Iran.
Briefly, In addition to central office, several research laboratories, and several libraries located in Tehran, the main campus of this
center, being located in suburb of Tehran (16 Kilometers west of Tehran) consists of a vast complex including additional administrative
and research facilities, teaching facilities, dormitories, a day care center and a mosque, with a total area of 15 hectares. The
foundation consists of approximately 70000 Square meters in two phases. The building of the main research center contains 15
different research groups including 80 research laboratories with an area of more than41000 square meters.
The aim of NRCGEB is to Perform basic and applied research in bio-Science, medicine, agriculture, Pharmacology and biotechnology.
The development of modern techniques in genetic engineering, molecular biology and biotechnology has been the main purpose of the
center.
Presently, more than 110 full-time staff members work in the research, administration and service departments. In addition, a number of
scientists and researchers from other universities, research and educational centers in Iran and abroad cooperate with the center in
research projects and educational workshops.
The center’s laboratories consist of two main laboratory rooms, a cell culture room, bacterial culture room, cold room, warm room, dark
room and photographic lab, washing and sterilization-room and centrifuge center. The laboratories are equipped with the most advanced
equipment necessary for research in genetic engineering and biotechnology (they include: DNA synthesizer, Microscopes, DNA
extractor, Chromatographic Systems, Protein sequencer, Orbital shakers, HPLC system, Incubators, PCR machines, Incubator shakers,
Freeze dryer, Fermenters, Centrifuges Culture Propagation, maintenance and Storage equipment, Microfuges, Spectrophotometer and
Gel scanning system).
The center Provides to other labs, research centers and Universities in Iran for DNA Primer synthesis, protein sequencing, freeze-drying,
and glass blowing.
A series of basic and applied research projects have been funded in molecular biology and biotechnology. The numbers of current projects
are more than 30. The library is an important part of the center. It houses several thousands English Language and
Farsi Language books. The library also subscribes more than 350 Scientific Journals, thus receiving the most advanced
Publications in cellular and molecular biology, genetic engineering, immunology, biotechnology and microbiology.
The library also houses a comprehensive software system comprising an index and Farsi and English Language books, Publications and
articles. This system also Provides access to the Bio-Informatic National Network of the NRCGEB computer center.
The Center holds practical and theoretical short- term workshops each year to familiarize specialists, researchers and graduate students
with modern techniques and new subjects in molecular and cellular biology, genetic engineering and biotechnology. The workshops are
conducted in cooperation with Iranian scientists from all over the world.
