The <strong>2010</strong> Gulf Research Meeting<br />
The Opening Ceremony for the <strong>2010</strong> Gulf Research Meeting<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>. Giles Kepel, the Chair <strong>of</strong> Middle Eastern and Mediterranean <strong>Studies</strong> at the Institut d’ Etudes<br />
Politiques de Paris at Sciences Po, concluded the short welcoming remarks by speaking about the<br />
dedication and commitment that both the Gulf Research Center and Sciences Po have towards<br />
research and studies in the Gulf with the Kuwait Program at Sciences Po as a contributor to the<br />
Gulf Research Meeting. He also reiterated the importance <strong>of</strong> the event and the contributions it<br />
can make to the Gulf Region.<br />
The welcoming remarks were followed by two keynote addresses. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Dame Alison<br />
Richard, the Vice Chancellor <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Cambridge <strong>of</strong>fered her views and ideas <strong>of</strong><br />
the meeting and what it meant for the relationship between universities and academic<br />
excellence, and how both are instrumental in contributing to society. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Richard<br />
focused specifically on also the strong ties that Cambridge is building with the Gulf region<br />
and with such institutions as the UAE <strong>University</strong>, the Sultan Qaboos <strong>University</strong> and the<br />
King Abdullah <strong>University</strong> for Science and Techology (KAUST) in Saud Arabia. and how such
