2.1.2 Interv<strong>en</strong>tion<br />

“Diagnostic evaluation”, “managem<strong>en</strong>t and treatm<strong>en</strong>t” and “prognosis” are considered<br />

as an interv<strong>en</strong>tion of non-specific neck complaints and pain.<br />

2.1.2.1 Inclusion criteria<br />

Diagnostic and/or prognostic evaluation<br />

• Medical history taking<br />

• Symptoms and signs<br />

• Physical examination and assessm<strong>en</strong>t<br />

• Diagnostic reasoning<br />

• Psychological assessm<strong>en</strong>t<br />

• Imaging<br />

• Diagnostic injections<br />

• Other tests<br />

Managem<strong>en</strong>t and treatm<strong>en</strong>t<br />

2.1.2.2 Exclusion criteria<br />

• Information or education programs<br />

• Ergonomic interv<strong>en</strong>tions both in private and work situation<br />

• Non-medicinal treatm<strong>en</strong>t: psychotherapy, manipulations, mobilisation,<br />

orthosis (pillows, collar, oral splint) exercise, laser, acupuncture, …<br />

• Medicinal treatm<strong>en</strong>ts: various (invasive and non-invasive) forms of<br />

administration<br />

• Complex interv<strong>en</strong>tions (e.g. psychological treatm<strong>en</strong>t and exercise<br />

program, multidisciplinary approaches)<br />

• Surgery<br />

No exclusion criteria for interv<strong>en</strong>tion were applied.<br />

2.1.3 Comparison<br />

Comparators are either the natural progress of symptoms or alternative diagnostic<br />

tests, managem<strong>en</strong>t and treatm<strong>en</strong>t procedures. Inclusion criteria were the followings:<br />

• Diagnostic evaluation versus other diagnostic evaluation<br />

• Managem<strong>en</strong>t and treatm<strong>en</strong>t versus other managem<strong>en</strong>t and treatm<strong>en</strong>t<br />

• Diagnostic evaluation and/or managem<strong>en</strong>t and treatm<strong>en</strong>t versus no<br />

interv<strong>en</strong>tion, no treatm<strong>en</strong>t<br />

2.1.4 Outcome<br />

2.1.4.1 Inclusion criteria<br />

This study should give up to date information about:<br />

• Diagnostic accuracy of procedures (i.e. false positive, rate, s<strong>en</strong>sitivity,<br />

specificity, ROC); history taking, clinical examination, diagnostic tests and<br />

procedures<br />

This study should also give up to date information on outcomes of treatm<strong>en</strong>ts, namely<br />

about:<br />

• Side effects, adverse ev<strong>en</strong>ts of treatm<strong>en</strong>ts<br />

• Evolution (improvem<strong>en</strong>t or not) in: the degree of pain, functional capacity,<br />

quality of life (only if standardized and validated outcome measures have<br />

be<strong>en</strong> used), activity, return to work, work disability, disability measures,<br />

global perceived effect.
