2.2.1.3 In- and exclusion criteria<br />
Follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>clusion criteria were used throughout the evaluation of title-abstract<br />
(literature sift<strong>in</strong>g):<br />
Terms: Orthodontic, treatment need, <strong>in</strong>dications orthodontic<br />
treatment, syndromes, perception: patient and cl<strong>in</strong>ician<br />
(orthodontic practitioner), expectation patient, social<br />

2.2.1.4 Select<strong>in</strong>g studies<br />
For the review of the literature epidemiological studies, randomized controlled trials,<br />
controlled cl<strong>in</strong>ical trials, reviews, systematic reviews, guidel<strong>in</strong>es or meta-analys<strong>is</strong> were<br />
assessed. If studies <strong>with</strong> high levels of evidence were not found, consideration was also<br />
made to <strong>in</strong>clude study designs <strong>with</strong> lower levels of evidence to reflect the best level of<br />
evidence <strong>available</strong> on th<strong>is</strong> subject.<br />
Exclusion criteria were used as mentioned above.<br />
Overall and after d<strong>is</strong>card<strong>in</strong>g duplicate references, 603 citations were retrieved for<br />
further study. <strong>The</strong>y were read <strong>in</strong> full and critically appra<strong>is</strong>ed as described below.<br />
