Walter Michael was featured in the
Arizona Star Daily, where he recounted his
experience with the famed Tennessee
Scopes trial.
1967
H. Lee Moffitt established the Moffitt
Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla.The center is
designated as a National Cancer Institute
and is committed to remaining on the
cutting edge of discovery as well as
embracing patient- and family-centered
care.
Ben Strand, Jr., was recognized in a
February news story on WBIR Channel
10 TV in Knoxville,Tenn., for his work
with the MountainViewYouth
Development Center. He coaches a team
from the center that competes in the High
School Mock Trial Competition. (See story
on page 7.) Strand has been the juvenile
judge for Jefferson County for 11 years.
He also handles the civil, criminal and
probate matters for the General Sessions
and Probate Court.
1969
Skip Ames was accepted to participate as
a 2009 Fellow of the National Institute for
Teaching Ethics and Professionalism in
Atlanta, Ga.
1970
Judith S. Crittenden coauthored
Introducing Alabama Family Law (Alabama
Practice Series) with Charles P. Kindregan,
Jr.Thompson Reuters published the twovolume
treatise in 2008.
1973
Don Harrison joined Lehr Middlebrooks
&Vreeland, PC, as a senior counsel.

J. Richard Duke was named to Worth
magazine’s Top 100 Attorneys 2008 for the
fourth year in a row.
1974
W. Lee Thuston of Burr & Forman, LLP,
was honored by Chambers USA as a 2009
leader in his field.
1976
Charlie Waldrep was featured in the
March issue of Birmingham Magazine for
his community service work with
Alabama Civic Chorale.
1977
Joseph Madison Carlton, Jr., announces

Joseph Fawal of Fawal & Spina was
named to the executive committee of the
Birmingham Bar Association.
George M. “Jack” Neal, Jr., a shareholder
of Sirote & Permutt, was inducted
as the president of the Birmingham Bar
Association for 2009.At the Birminghambased
firm, Neal’s practice focuses on
general and commercial civil litigation,
and he serves as a mediator and arbitrator.
He also was named as a member of the
2009 Board of Trustees for the Legal Aid
Society of Birmingham and was accepted
to the Roster of Neutrals for both arbitration
and mediation by the American
Arbitration Association.
Carol Sue Nelson of Maynard Cooper &
Gale, PC, was honored in the 2009 edition
of Chambers USA.

Joseph A. Lane was selected by The Best
Lawyers in America 2009 in the areas of
commercial litigation and construction
law.
James M. Nolan, an attorney with the
Birmingham office of Constangy, Brooks
& Smith, LLP, was promoted to an equity
partner of the firm.
Martha Jane Patton continues to serve
in her 11th year as executive director on
the board of the Legal Aid Society of
Birmingham.
James R. Pratt III, a partner in the law
firm of Hare,Wynn, Newell & Newton,
was selected for inclusion in the 2009
edition of Benchmark Litigation. Pratt
earned his inclusion as a star litigator based
on his accomplishments in the areas of
personal injury, products liability and
complex civil litigation matters.
Tommy Spina of Birmingham was named
2009 president of the American Board of
Criminal Lawyers.
1979
James Anderson was selected as a fellow
of the Alabama Law Foundation.
Joseph S. Bower was a featured speaker
at the Investors Title Insurance Company’s
Fifth Annual Fall Gathering Seminar in
Chapel Hill, N.C. Bower, who practices
with White & Allen, P.A., in Kinston,
N.C., spoke on the practical, ethical
dilemmas that can emerge in real property
transactions. Bower’s practice is concentrated
