<strong>Missouri</strong> <strong>Western</strong> <strong>State</strong> <strong>University</strong> is a learning community focused<br />

on students as individuals and as members of society. The institution<br />

offers students at all stages of life the opportunity to achieve<br />

excellence in the classroom and beyond, as they prepare to be<br />

leaders in their work and in their communities.<br />

<strong>Western</strong> demonstrates a strong commitment to the educational,<br />

economic, cultural and social development of the people it<br />

serves. The university sets the standard for excellence in student<br />

development and community leadership.<br />

Founded as St. Joseph Junior College in 1915, <strong>Western</strong> was<br />

transformed into a four-year institution in 1969 and became a full<br />

member of the <strong>State</strong> of <strong>Missouri</strong> system in 1977. It was designated<br />

a university in 2005. Enrollment in the fall of 2010 was 6,134 with<br />

more than 190 faculty members.<br />

The student-centered, high-quality instruction focuses on<br />

experience-based learning and community service. Every classroom<br />

and public meeting room on campus is equipped with presentation<br />

technology.<br />

The university provides a blend of traditional liberal arts and careeroriented<br />

degree programs, offering one-year certificates, two-year<br />

associate degrees, preprofessional transfer programs, four-year<br />

baccalaureate degrees and professional master’s degrees.<br />

<strong>Western</strong>’s College of Professional Studies, College of Liberal Arts and<br />

Sciences and Craig School of Business offer baccalaureate degrees<br />

in the fields of art, biology, business, chemistry, communication,<br />

computer science, criminal justice, economics, education,<br />

engineering technology, English, French, government, history,<br />

interdisciplinary studies, mathematics, music, nursing, physical<br />

education, psychology, recreation, social work and Spanish, as well<br />

as master of applied<br />

The <strong>Western</strong> Institute offers applied learning, business training, applied<br />

research support and lifelong learning opportunities for the region. In<br />

addition, groups throughout the nation utilize <strong>Western</strong>’s facilities for<br />

conferences and seminars.<br />

The institution is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges<br />

and Schools Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. Program<br />

accreditations include the Accreditation Board for Engineering and<br />

Technology, American Bar Association, American Chemical Society, American<br />

Health Information Management Association, Commission on Accreditation<br />

in Physical Therapy Education, Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education,<br />

Council on Social Work Education, National Accrediting Agency for Clinical<br />

Laboratory Science, National Association of Schools of Music and National<br />

Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.<br />

The campus, comprising more than 700 acres, contains seven residence<br />

halls, a residential commons building and 14 major campus buildings<br />

including 10 academic buildings, a student union, a fitness center, a<br />

conference center and a learning resource center and a new sports complex<br />

with an indoor football field. A Springs Sports Complex opened in 2011.<br />

The campus has a large nature study area, a nature trail and nine ponds.<br />
