Here for good.
For more than twenty years the MAA
has served as a valuable link between
generous alumni and friends and the next
generation of Marlington graduates. More
than donors or philanthropists, the growing
pool of individuals who annually support
the MAA are making purposeful and critical
investments in the future. We are grateful for
your continued support and strive to make
you proud of your school, the honorees we
select and the work of the MAA.
Since our first $500 awards in 1989 to the
twenty awards totaling $45,000 in 2012, the
Marlington Alumni Association strives to
make a difference. Just like the Marlington
School district, we’ve grown and changed.
But we remain, as always, here for good. For
good of the next generations, for good of
you, our donors, and for good of the global
community we now inhabit, we’re here.
Donors are the heart of the MAA. Our goal
is to help you tailor your giving to match your
philanthropic dreams and to make donating
as easy as possible. I invite you to become
a patron at the level most appropriate for
you and your family, and make your taxdeductible
gift of $25, $50, $500, $1,000 or
more using the enclosed envelope or online
at www.marlingtonalumni.org. We’re here
for good.
President
Marlington Alumni Association

In Memorium
By Marsha (Rinehart) Graham (’70)
The Marlington community lost a valued member
May 3, 2012 when Thomas William Hazen went
to his Heavenly home.
Many remember Mr. Hazen as a principal or
guidance counselor. Others saw him in the
neighborhood, at church or at community
functions. No matter where, Tom Hazen was
most recognized by his graciousness and his
friendly smile.
Tom took genuine interest in other’s lives. He
loved to hear updates and accomplishments and
often remembered details and connections others
forgot. He so enjoyed keeping up with alumni that
for some years he contacted former students,
charted their post-graduation accomplishments
and kept up-to-date statistics. Always with an
interest in improving the school, he shared the
data with MHS staff and made suggestions for
ways to improve MHS curriculum to better serve
the students!
While Tom made an impact at Marlington, his life
was full of achievements!
Did you know he:
• was born Feb. 4, 1917 and lived for
95 years
• Graduated from Alliance High School
• Graduated from Mount Union College
• was a First Lieutenant in the United
States Army
• was awarded the Bronze Star
• was in the Medical Detachment – Infantry
• was married to Helen (Pauli) Hazen for
65 years
• taught at Osnaburg Local HS and
Marlboro HS
• earned his Master’s Degree at Kent
State University
• was Marlington High School’s first Principal
and served for15 years
• was MHS’s First Vocational Counselor
• retired in 1984
• was a published author
Though these few facts may highlight some
of Mr. Hazen’s life, they can never reveal his
best trait- he was a true, honorable and wise
gentleman. Mr. Hazen always listened and
processed before speaking. He was tactful,
caring and compassionate. He loved his family
and cherished his years at Marlington. May
he always be remembered both in and out
of the halls of Marlington High for he will be
sorely missed.
Jeff Pucci (’82)
I give to the MAA because of my great
experience at Marlington. Donating to
the Alumni Association is something
I want to do because of the positive
experience I had- and I still bleed
orange and black! Go Dukes.
Ray Sluss (’44)
I spent my entire career in the
field of education- as a teacher,
a principal and for many years in
the academic textbook industry. I
believe in the value of education
and had opportunities because of
the generosity of others. It is my
privilege to give back and encourage
another generation.
Annabelle (Bloss) Fearon (’54)
I donate to the MAA because I am
proud of our school system. I know
the funds are managed well and time
and effort are put into choosing the
recipients. We need to show our
thanks for the education we received.
Kevin Pucci (’78)
I give to the Marlington Alumni
Association because it is important
that I support the school that provided
me the foundation of where I am
today. I had a great experience being a
Marlington Duke and I want to support
providing the same quality education as
I was given.
Nancy Schwan
(Retired MHS teacher)
I have gladly supported MAA through
the years, as Marlington – and all the
wonderful people it is composed of –
has supported me throughout the years.
Marlington is near and dear to my heart.
I did my student teaching there in the
spring of 1964, then accepted a position
there in the fall -- and never left until I
retired thirty years later. It is a beautiful
and treasured part of my life.

Why
Debbie Fox ( ‘87)
I give because the MAA is a great organization that promotes pride in
our schools and community. I appreciate getting the newsletter with
updates on events and classmates. The scholarships given to senior
students as they begin their post-high school career not only help them
succeed in their chosen career but affirm them as worthy individuals.
