Royal Aeronautical Society / Handbook 2012 / Careers Recognition and networking Embarking on your career path into aerospace The Society offers a number of opportunities for you once you begin on your path to an aerospace career. By becoming involved, getting to know your contemporaries and possibly even gaining financial support, you can help take advantage of one of the key benefits of joining the Society — making lifelong friends and contacts who will be alongside you as your career develops. There are a number of specific events each year for Young Members of the Society: > Young Members’ AeroChallenge (February) — an opportunity for students and graduate members to get together for a friendly competition challenging your aeronautical knowledge and skills > Young Persons’ Annual Conference — a dedicated conference for young members focusing on key developments in aerospace and how they affect you > Young Persons Lecture and Awards Evening (Autumn) — given by and for young people > Medals and Awards for Young People — which recognise young people’s achievement in aerospace In addition, there is a dedicated Young Members page in The Aerospace Professional each month, and Leading Edge, the electronic newsletter for young members. Don’t forget also the Society’s Centennial Scholarship fund (see page 24) which provides assistance towards tuition fees for the future generation of aerospace achievers. 32 IT FLIES GOES TRANSATLANTIC This year for the first time the event went TRANSLANTIC! Two teams from the University of Dayton, Ohio, were able to come over to Coventry and compete. This followed the first IT FLIES USA back in April, when teams from Swansea and Coventry universities took the opportunity to fly to Dayton, stay on the UD campus, compete in IT FLIES — with their designs assessed by USAF test pilots — and also visit the awesome Air Force Museum. Dave Southwood from The Empire Test Pilots School and Dave Mackay, Chief Test Pilot for Virgin Galactic, judged the entries, while John Farley, ex Harrier Chief Test Pilot, provided the commentary throughout the day. With nine entries this year and a large variety of aircraft types from a motorised glider through to a C-130H Hercules, the judges were kept busy throughout the day! Unusually there were two V/STOL aircraft designs entered, Anthony Crowley from Brunel University with a Sea Harrier and Ewan Douglas from Coventry with an F-35B. The competition resulted in a tie for first place between Brian Cranston and John Puttman from The University of Dayton with their two-seat electric aircraft and Swansea University’s team with its very light jet. The Dayton students thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the UK and were able to go to RAF Cosford’s Airshow and visit the Royal Aeronautical Society while staying on campus at Swansea. 2012 dates are 31 March for the USA IT FLIES at Dayton, and 12 June for the UK version to be held in the brand new aerospace laboratory at Coventry University.
