From radar to the Typhoon, we have an
unprecedented history in innovation fi rsts.
However, we don’t rest on our laurels. In the
last few years we’re proud to have launched
the Type 45 destroyer and Astute submarine.
And we are continually developing new
Foreword
2012 is promising to be a year to remember for all of us
— and for many different reasons!
It is 64 years since our nation last hosted the Olympic Games. Post WW2, those
were challenging times, particularly economically, and extraordinary efforts were
made to provide the infrastructure to host the world’s greatest gathering.
2012 will again be challenging, not in a post-war sense but certainly the economic
cycle that impacts our every action will continue to ensure that, while continuing
to serve our membership and strive towards the achievement of the Society’s
strategic goals, we do so in a climate of financial prudence.
We are delighted that No.4 Hamilton Place will host the Japanese Olympic
delegation throughout the Olympic Games, a signal that the Society, with its
global aspirations, can link together with one of the world’s great industrial
economies during such a prestigious event.
Last year we were reflecting on the potential impact of the Strategic Defence and
Security Review. How quickly times move on and today we are reflecting on the
operational pressures that have faced our Service Chiefs in the past 12 months.
On the civil front, the major airframe and engine manufacturers have good forward
order books which can only be healthy for their supply chains and our industry.
The Society launched its new website in late August 2011 as part of phase 1 of
the development and introduction of our new IT system infrastructure. There will
be two further phases which we are targeting for completion by the end of the
first quarter of 2012. We then believe we will be able to enhance our ‘offering’, or
‘value proposition’, to our global membership significantly.
The Society’s new Business Development function has been concentrating
on marketing the Society and its many membership benefits. Focusing on the
feedback obtained from our 2010 membership questionnaire we have sought to
move the Society forward in a number of areas but, of course, this is an evolving
situation and a further follow-up questionnaire will be circulated during 2012 to
obtain feedback on our progress to date.
The networking opportunities, at all levels, remain unarguably our most significant
member benefit and, recognising that only a relatively small percentage of our
membership are able to take regular advantage of the wonderful facilities at No.4
Hamilton Place, the enhanced IT infrastructure will, we hope, be able to provide a
virtual presence for our more remote members.
We have a very loyal and supportive company membership through our Corporate
Partners scheme and our aim is to continue to grow this group both to their benefit
and, of course, to the benefit of the Society as a whole.
The purpose of this Handbook, as ever, is to describe and provide a reference to
the activities within the Society. Please use it for your benefit and for the benefit
of others.
On behalf of us all at No.4, I would like to wish you a successful and happy 2012.
Branches and Divisions
Branches are a regional embodiment of the
Society. They represent a vital mechanism
for the delivery of membership benefits
and provide a global platform for the
dissemination of aerospace information.
The Society proudly boasts an international network of
Branches covering all the major centres of aerospace activity
including Bristol, Derby, Dubai, Hamburg, Montreal, Munich,
Paris, Seattle, Toulouse and Washington DC.
In broad terms, the objects and responsibility of every
Branch is to supplement locally the efforts of the Society; to
support and maintain the highest professional standards in all
aerospace disciplines; to provide a unique source of specialist
information; to provide a local forum for the exchange of ideas
and to exert influence in the interests of aerospace in both the
public and industrial arenas.
Each year the global Branch network hosts circa 400
lecture evenings. These Branch events are open to all with
a shared interest in aviation. Non-members of the RAeS are
encouraged to attend and will receive a warm welcome at all
Branch lecture evenings.
Divisions have been formed in countries and regions that can
sustain a number of Branches. Divisions operate with a large
degree of autonomy, being responsible for their own Branch
network, membership recruitment, subscription levels,
conference and lecture programmes.
Specialist
Groups
The range and diversity of the activities of the Aerospace Industry are second to none. From
airlines to aviation law, space flight to balloon flight, aeronautical engineering to aircraft
maintenance, avionics to flight crew training — all these, and those in between, are sectors
within the aerospace industry, in which professionals, invariably bonded by a passion for
aviation and aerospace, contribute to the UK’s leading position worldwide.
Outlined below is an insight into some of the interest areas of the industry, written by those
who know — the technical experts and ‘captains of industry’ that form the Royal Aeronautical
Society’s Specialist Groups.
Further information on each of the Specialist Groups can be found at www.aerosociety.com
GENERAL AVIATION
The General Aviation Group (GAG) aims
to promote increasing professionalism
among the GA community as a whole,
but with a particular emphasis on
aircraft design and engineering.
The GAG covers the whole range
of GA from business jets, through
flight training to recreational flying,
microlights and gliding.
The GAG organises an annual
conference held in November and, in
recent years this has concentrated on
light aircraft design and manufacturing,
with a following of regular delegates.
There are usually two lectures held in
17
Royal Aeronautical Society / Handbook 2012
the Spring of a more general nature,
the most recent was presented by the
Team Leader of the Blades Aerobatic
Team. The GAG organises competitions
from time to time, more recently
these have been geared to fit the
academic year to encourage student
project participation. A cockpit design
competition has recently closed, and a
microlight competition is in planning for
the 2012-2013 academic year.
The GAG committee members
represent the GA community and the
RAeS on the relevant Civil Aviation
Authority (CAA) Committees. In
2006 the GAG published a landmark
Discussion Paper on Experimental
Category for the development of GA
aircraft, and negotiations continue with
the CAA on an active basis.
GREENER BY DESIGN
‘Air Travel — Greener by Design’ was
inaugurated to bring together experts
from every part of the aerospace
community (manufacturers, airlines
and airport operators, government
departments, etc.) to seek practical
environmental and economically
sustainable solutions to the challenge
posed by the impact of aviation on
the environment. Now in its 12th
year, some of the original objectives
of ‘Air Travel — Greener by Design’
of increasing the awareness of the
environmental issues facing aviation
have been achieved. The group is now
formally included in the governance
structure of the Royal Aeronautical
Society while continuing to provide an
independent voice in communicating
with, advising and informing
stakeholders and public alike on the
impact of the environmental challenge.
An annual report is published.
The 2012 Annual Conference will
be held on 16 October. The probable
theme will be ‘Interdependencies‘,
that is the identification, progress and
choices to be made in prioritising the
often conflicting demands of meeting
all environmental goals. Discussions
are also ongoing on the possibility of a
joint forum on Biofuels for Aviation in
the early summer.
HISTORICAL
The role of the Historical Group is to
provide a focus within the RAeS for the
study, discussion and interpretation of
aerospace history, and to contribute on
behalf of the Society to wider activities
in this field.
The Group holds several lectures a year
at Hamilton Place and also contributed
to the Spitfire Women Seminar to
celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the
Air Transport Auxiliary. The Group is
represented on a Society Committee
that awards Heritage Plaques to
commemorate people, places or things
of significance to the history of British
aviation and members also serve on
the Advisory Group for the National
Aerospace Library.
This year saw the launch of the online
The Journal of Aeronautical History for
papers that are of high quality but are
unsuitable for The Aeronautical Journal
because their topics are historical
rather than technical. By the end of
2011 five papers and the beginnings of
a correspondence section were on the
Society’s website.
The Group also arranges visits to
museums and other sites of historical
significance, and attempts to answer
questions on historical matters put to
the Society.
Group Chairman: Peter Elliott MRAeS
HUMAN FACTORS
Human factors (HF) can be considered
as human performance as a reflection
of the context within which it takes
place; factors which have the potential
of causing injuries to personnel,
damage to equipment or structures,
loss of material, or reduction of the
ability to perform a prescribed function.
The aim of the HF Group (HFG) is to
promote the understanding of those
factors and the management of error in
all aspects of aeronautics throughout the
UK & Europe. Although it is recognised
that aviation is an international business,
the HFG’s activities must necessarily
be limited to areas where there is most
benefit to be gained by its UK ‘customers’
— who include aviation professionals,
security staff, designers, manufacturers,
regulators, unions, industry bodies,
safety organisations, government
funding agencies, academia, trainers,
influencers, consultants, accident
investigators, researchers, and the flying
public.
Strategies include improving standards
of safety by promoting better industry
understanding of HF hazards and
techniques for dealing with them;
providing communication, education
and training on HF matters; working
with relevant agencies and other
RAeS Specialist Groups to achieve
a co-ordinated aviation HF strategy;
encouraging HF research and
development in aviation; arranging a
programme of lectures, conferences
and mini-conferences; developing
position, discussion and specialist
papers; and providing practical ‘front
line’ advice, guidance and tools that are
useable in the workplace.
Group Chairman: Barry Neal MRAeS
HUMAN POWERED AIRCRAFT
The aim of the Human Powered Aircraft
Group is to encourage and foster
an interest in the continual quest of
humans to fly under their own power.
The Group administers the Kremer
International Marathon and Sporting
Aircraft Competitions as a means of
encouraging research and experiment
in this field. In addition there is a new
competition for schools or youth groups
to build and fly a human powered
aircraft as well as the inaugural Icarus
Cup proposed for 2012.
Group Chairman: Dr Bill Brooks FRAeS
MANAGEMENT STUDIES
The aim of the Group is to increase
awareness, appreciation and
understanding of management issues
in aerospace and to provide a forum
for industry, academia, the Ministry
of Defence and civil aerospace
organisations to discuss management
techniques and advances.
We are currently seeking new
committee members to address these
important issues so please contact the
Conference & Events team if you feel
you could offer your knowledge and
expertise.
Group Chairman: Vacant

benefits from the expertise of both
parent Societies’ members.
The aim of CPTAC is to promote
interest in aerospace propulsion to the
widest possible community. Members
of CPTAC reflect this broad aim,
coming from industry, academia (staff
and students), operators, government
departments and regulatory bodies.
CPTAC provides technical advice to
both Societies on propulsion-related
topics, covering powered aircraft,
space vehicles, missiles and auxiliary
power units.
Group Chairman: Peter Curtis MRAeS
ROTORCRAFT
The Rotorcraft Group serves as the focus
for all matters related to helicopters and
other rotary wing aircraft. It is a multidisciplinary
group with broad interests
including research and development
of new technology, manufacture,
operations (both military and civil) and
regulation. The group places particular
emphasis on the safe operation and
environmental impact of rotorcraft, on
promoting the expansion of the role of
civil and public service rotorcraft to the
benefit of the community and on support
to schools with the aim of encouraging
pupils to select aeronautical engineering
as their career of first choice. The Group
organises one major conference each
year which, in 2012, will be held in
conjunction with the Flight Simulation
Group on Rotary Wing Mission Training
and Rehearsal. Annual named lectures to
commemorate the contributions made by
Juan de la Cierva and Alan Bristow to the
art, science and operation of rotorcraft
are sponsored by the Group.
SPACE
Space is an increasingly important
domain of commercial, military and
scientific endeavour in the 21st
century. The Space Group aims
to ensure that the Society and its
members are able to lead and provide
foresight within the space community.
Lectures, conferences and discussion
papers are provided regularly on
topics critical to the sector. In recent
years this has included lectures by
world authorities on launch vehicles,
discussion papers on Britain’s space
exploration policy, and conferences
on Space Tourism. In 2012, the
highlight will be the third triennial
European conference on space
tourism responding to the imminent
start-up of this new form of business
that straddles the aviation and space
sectors.
STRUCTURES & MATERIALS
The aim of the Structures and Materials
Group is to assist the Society and its
members to understand the complex
subjects of material use and structural
design and analysis (including statics,
dynamics and aeroelastics). It also
covers the areas of manufacturing
and testing in as much as this effects
material and design requirements.
The scope extends to cover advanced
CAD, CAM and CAE tools and includes
Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation
methodology and application. New
materials development is considered
in relation to its influence on structural
efficiency and integrity, aeroelastic
performance and production processes.
The Group also supplies the UK
representative on the CEAS Structures
and Materials Technical Committee. The
Group organises a number of national
and international conferences which
cover the various topics in its remit.
UNMANNED AIR SYSTEMS
A UAS is an unmanned aircraft system;
an aircraft with no onboard pilot. UAS
can be manually controlled aircraft
(e.g. directly flown by a pilot through
a ground control station), operated
through pre-programmed flight
plans or by more complex dynamic
automation systems involving on
board sensors and/or processed data.
UAS are currently used extensively
by the military in the surveillance
and ground attack roles and are now
finding greater use in civil operations
including aerial photography, surveying
and inspection, as well as in support
Royal Aeronautical Society / Handbook 2012
of emergency services and disaster
management teams.
The UAS Group runs a two-day
conference every year and has initiated
the Langley Lecture, a Named Lecture
started in 2006 to commemorate
Samuel Pierpont Langley.
Group Chairman: André Clot MRAeS
WEAPON SYSTEMS &
TECHNOLOGY
The Weapon Systems and Technology
Group’s main aim is to promote the
understanding of and interest in WS+T
by means of public and classified
lectures, symposia, conferences,
workshops and classified debates.
In furthering this aim, the group
recognises the many technical
disciplines contributing to the field
of WS+T, including aerodynamics,
guidance, navigation, control, sensing,
The Society’s newest committee,
Women in Aviation and Aerospace, was
officially launched at the third Women
in Aviation and Aerospace Conference
in October 2009. The group has been
set up with the main remit to encourage
more women into the industry and is
the first in the UK to represent women
working in all sectors of the industry.
The women’s group is working hard to
contact women working in aviation and
aerospace to win their support for its
key task: to encourage young women
to consider aviation and aerospace as a
challenging and worthwhile career. The
group also plans to help women to further
their careers in the industry by offering
networking and mentoring support.
Other aims include establishing a
Support
the Society
Legacies Living Legacies
Remembering the Royal Aeronautical Society in your Will
is one of the most important ways of making a gift to the
Society. It allows us to plan for the future and invest in
projects that will make a major contribution to Society’s
activities in years to come.
A legacy through the Royal Aeronautical Society Foundation,
which supports the Society’s general and charitable activities,
is the most significant way in which you could help to further
the Society’s aims. It would allow the Society to choose the
most effective and beneficial way, at any time in the future, to
make use of your gift. However, a Will is an incredibly personal
document and we are aware that some Members have
very specific ideas of what they would like their bequests
to support which the Society is very happy to discuss in
confidence. The Society advises anyone wishing to make a
will, or amending an existing one, to see a solicitor.
If you have already made a Will but have decided to leave
a bequest to the Foundation you can do so by means of a
codicil, but please note that a codicil should not be stapled to
your Will, as this would invalidate it.
22
Members could opt for a living legacy whereby they agree to
bequeath a certain amount to the Royal Aeronautical Society
Foundation but make an annual contribution with the proviso
that the residual amount will be due from their estate on
death less any donations already made. For example, you
might decide to make an annual contribution of £1,000 to the
Foundation over a period of ten years. You would then make
provision in your Will to bequeath £10,000 to the Foundation,
less the sum of the annual payments.
As a charity, bequests to the Society are exempt from
Inheritance Tax, thus offsetting the burden on the rest of
your estate.
If you have remembered the Society in your Will, or would like
further information on legacies, please contact the Finance
department at the Society.

Royal Aeronautical Society / Handbook 2012 / Careers
Developing the future
— the RAeS approach
For a number of years, the Royal Aeronautical Society has been involved in a wide
range of activities which aim to inspire young people to explore the world of aerospace;
provide in-depth, impartial careers information and guidance; and support the
professional development of early career professionals.
In 2011, the original committees for delivering these activities,
the Young Members’ Board and Launchpad for Learning
committee merged to form the Young Persons Board, allowing
for more direct support from the staff of the Society’s Careers
and Education Department and providing a network of Society
volunteers and staff with diverse backgrounds, including
aerospace, education and careers, working towards the same
goal: to attract and retain a continuing supply of talented
people into aerospace in the 21st century.
Crucially, the new, overarching Young Persons Board provides
greater visibility and strategic planning of youth initiatives to
Council. As a result, the Young Members Board and Launchpad
for Learning Committee agreed to formally merge to create a
new overarching Board which provides greater visibility and
strategic planning of youth initiatives to Council.
JOINED UP AIMS
The new Board’s work with young
people broadly fits around the
following objectives:
> To encourage those with an
early interest in aerospace and
aviation;
> To spread the word about what
being involved in the industry
can offer;
> To retain talent within the
industry and
> To encourage and recognise
young people’s achievements
HOW
By joining up our existing
resources, knowledge and
experiences the Board aims to
enhance our resources both within
the Society and in the sector
generally — particularly important
in the current economic climate —
and be able to work more closely
with other parts of the Society,
such as the Specialist Groups,
Branches and with external
partners like ADS and Boeing.
Some of the Society activities that
Careers Centre
and Education
Activities
The Royal Aeronautical Society’s Careers
Centre was established in 1997 and has
worked around three key objectives:
> Support people seeking employment in
the aerospace and aviation community
> Provide impartial information on the
various career paths and entry routes
offered by the sector
> Promote aerospace and aviation
to a new generation
To achieve these objectives, the Careers and Education team
has undertaken a range of activities including production
of specialist careers leaflets and magazines, 1-2-1 careers
guidance appointments, events, competitions and initiatives
for all ages to promote the sector and, in 2010, the launch
of a dedicated website in partnership with ADS, www.
careersinaerospace.com
In addition, the team provides support to the new Young
Persons Board formed from the merger of the former Young
Members Board and Launchpad for Learning committee,
helping the department to plan strategically future activities.
Ballantyne Event 2011
The Society runs an annual event for secondary schools at
its prestigious headquarters to introduce aerospace career
opportunities in the context of current issues facing the
sector and their impact on the industry. As well as hearing
directly from aerospace professionals on their experiences,
attendees are also offered the chance to have their say.
Following aviation’s interactions with the forces of nature in
2010, from volcanic ash to severe snowfall, the 2011 event
28
theme was Aerospace vs The Elements and dealt with how
pilots and engineers deal with such occurrences.
Introduced by Past President David Couzens, the first
speaker for the day Peter Nye, a GAPAN pilot, spoke about
obstacles faced by pilots everyday; earth, air, water and fire
and, in particular, how to land an aircraft in a cross-wind.
Then Alan Eccleston, Chief Airworthiness Engineer, Rolls-
Royce, spoke specifically about the effects of volcanic ash on
aircraft, including a video of tests being run on Rolls-Royce
engines with testers firing projectiles and water into engines.
Next, Miguel Santos, Director of International Sales, Boeing
Commercial Airplanes, discussed what it is like to work for
Boeing. Many students had questions on the costs of some of
the larger aircraft and the materials used in their construction.
Lunch was served in the Argyll Room and many students took
this free time to try their hand at GAPAN’s free pilot aptitude
test. Each student’s scores were recorded and the one with
the highest score was announced at the end of the day.
In the afternoon, all participants were split up into smaller
groups to work on their own presentations about Aerospace vs
The Elements. Students had an hour to collect research from
posters provided by the Society on topics dealing with the
theme. Each group gave a five-minute presentation on topics
such as humanitarian aid, natural disasters, passenger comfort
and Earth observation. The 24 presentations included mock
news broadcasts, skits about the weather and a puppet show,
and were judged by the President and Alain Eccleston looking
at group participation, creativity and factual evidence. The
top three winning groups received goodie bags and the overall
winners received a Boeing model airliner.
The event also included an update and video on the Schools
Build-a-Plane Challenge from one of the participating schools,
Ercall Wood Technology College, and news on the steps for
the next two successful schools.
The 2012 event will take place in the spring and will be the
most interactive Ballantyne yet — focusing on aerospace
RAeS and ADS Careers in
Aerospace website
Launched in 2010, RAeS and ADS have worked closely to
provide an attractive and informative ‘one-stop-shop’ for
careers information, advice and guidance (IAG) in one, easyto-remember,
online location: www.careersinaerospace.com
The site is designed to be easy to navigate, with clear
sections for each user group, from school pupils to those
seeking resources to help them find employment in the sector.
The site is based on the work of Mark Furness, First Officer,
RAeS Associate Member and founder of the website who
created the structure and template and drove the project in
its early stages.
The site includes:
> Information on the varied career paths that the aerospace,
aviation, defence and space sectors offer
> News features
> Advice on which GCSE or A Level subjects to take
> Apprenticeship information, college and university study
> Information on initiatives for schools and universities
> Career resource section with application advice and jobhunting
for students through to experienced professionals
> A company directory featuring aerospace companies, and
separate directories for universities, colleges and flying
training organisations
> Calendar
During 2011 ADS and RAeS staff have been heavily
promoting the site to potential users at air shows, university
talks, the RAeS annual careers fair and also attended the
National Careers Guidance Shows (NCGS) in Leeds and
Wembley to showcase to careers advisors and teachers. In
2012 we will be attending the NCGS shows again, including
the new Edinburgh event, and the site will be a feature of
Futures Day 2012 at the Farnborough International Air Show.
Cool Aeronautics 2011
Cool Aeronautics is our primary school programme based
around a day of aerospace-themed talks and interactive
workshops with Year 5 (Key Stage 2) pupils at an aviation
place of interest. This year, in addition to our ‘mini’ Cool
Aeronautics event during the Manchester Science Festival
at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), Cool
Aeronautics came ‘home’ to Hamilton Place to kick off a
bigger programme across the UK in 2012.
Children from Frith Manor and Rokesly Junior schools (aged
between eight and ten) saw exciting talks from Senior First
Officer Rob Crocker, Liverpool Aerospace Engineering
postgrad Emma Timson and speakers from Astrium in the
morning. When the floor was opened for questions the
speakers were astounded by the level of questions being asked
by a lecture theatre of eight-year olds.
In the afternoon the speakers doubled as workshop helpers:
Emma Timson helped the children to understand balance
in an aircraft as well as thrust with the use of some straws,
balloons and a piece of string to fly them on.
Astrium went through a day in the life of a school child to
help them understand just how many times we use satellites
while Marion Neal from Merlin Flight Simulation Group asked
the children to draw a new type of spaceship, taking into
consideration important factors like thrust, weight, lift and
drag. The Merlin Flight Simulation Group competition also
doubled as a competition to win a flight in a Merlin Simulator
at Brunel University.
RAeS Chief Executive Simon Luxmoore wrapped up the day
with a thank you to all who attended, as well as announcing
the winners of the Merlin Flight Simulator prize. The children
left the building with a goodie bag in hand having spent the
whole day learning about aerospace.
Thanks to all those who helped out on the day and for Merlin
Flight Simulation for sponsoring the event.
If you would like to run a Cool Aeronautics event in your
area, or are a teacher or parent who would like to see your
school learn more about the exciting world of aerospace and
encourage STEM learning, please contact the RAeS Careers
and Education Department.
Schools Build-a-Plane
Challenge
2012: a year of fi rsts
The first lead school of the Schools Build-a-Plane Challenge
was announced in March 2009, since then five additional
schools have been chosen from around the UK and we
now have six aircraft in various stages of production; from
unpacking the kit to preparing for testing. 2012 looks to be
an exciting year.
The scheme offers 14-18 year-olds a fun, educationallyrelevant
engineering and business project demonstrating the
practical application of Science, Technology, Engineering and
Maths (STEM) subjects and relevance to the real world with
the aim of promoting greater take-up of physics and other
technical subjects. Participating schools are encouraged to
involve other students in aspects of the project, such as IT,
PR, marketing and fundraising and run accompanying aviation
projects in other subjects such as History, Geography, Food
Science, Art & Design.
Thanks to the generous support of Boeing, the Society has
provided light aircraft kits to the six schools involved so far.
The Light Aircraft Association (LAA) is also a key partner,
helping mentor the schools through the build, as well as
monitor and inspect the builds to ensure the aircraft meet
their Permit to Fly requirements when complete.
BUILD 1: YATELEY SCHOOL PROJECT
Yateley School, Hampshire was the first school selected to
lead on a build in their area, becoming very much a pathfinder
for the scheme, identifying how a project of this scale would
succeed in a school context, how long it would really take and
what is actually involved in turning a kit of parts into a real
working aircraft.
Yateley School has worked hard and, with the help of project
partners including Court Moor School in Fleet, Hampshire,
completed its aircraft build in 2011 registering it: G-YTLY.
The aircraft was exhibited at the British Military Tournament
at Earls Court in December. Ground testing is planned for
the new year with the first flight taking place shortly after,
allowing plenty of time for the aircraft to be prepared for its
‘Fly in’ to Farnborough Airshow’s Futures Day 2012.
BUILD 2: MARLING SCHOOL PROJECT
The second build was led by Marling School in Stroud, which
received its kit in Autumn 2009. Great progress has since
been made in partnership with Stroud High and Thomas Keble.
As of December 2011, the aircraft was almost complete with
only a few minor tasks to finish, leading to testing and its first
flight in 2012. The Marling aircraft was exhibited at RIAT and
Careers / Royal Aeronautical Society / Handbook 2012
the British Military Tournament. Students, staff and volunteers
from the build and partnering schools manned the stands at
both shows and helped over 2,000 children experience aircraft
controls ‘hands on’ and interacted with 4,000 visitors who took
an interest in the scheme.
BUILD 3: BRIDGE LEARNING CAMPUS
Bridge Learning Campus in Bristol began its build in 2011
and, despite encountering a few challenges along the way,
the enthusiasm and commitment of the staff, students and
volunteers has remained steadfast and there is now some real
momentum behind the project which looks to grow through
2012 with a greater number of build and wider educational
activities taking place.
BUILD 4: ERCALL WOOD TECHNOLOGY COLLEGE
Ercall Wood Technology College in Telford began building at
the start of 2011 and has made great progress on its aircraft
and its wider educational initiatives. Furthermore, Ercall
Wood has done a fantastic job of promoting its build and
getting volunteers involved. Most recently Ercall Wood staff,
students and volunteers manned stands at ‘The Flying Show’
in the NEC and at the Light Aircraft Design Conference at the
RAeS HQ in London.
BUILD 5 & 6: ERNESFORD GRANGE & NEWA
Both Ernesford Grange in Coventry and the North East
Wolverhampton Academy were selected to be part of the
process and are due to receive their kits early in 2012. Both
schools have already embarked on an ambitious programme
of wider educational activities and partnerships with local
business, educational establishment and the community.
IT FLIES GOES TRANSATLANTIC
This year for the first time the event went TRANSLANTIC!
Two teams from the University of Dayton, Ohio, were able to
come over to Coventry and compete.
This followed the first IT FLIES USA back in April, when teams
from Swansea and Coventry universities took the opportunity
to fly to Dayton, stay on the UD campus, compete in IT FLIES
— with their designs assessed by USAF test pilots — and
also visit the awesome Air Force Museum.
Dave Southwood from The Empire Test Pilots School and
Dave Mackay, Chief Test Pilot for Virgin Galactic, judged the
entries, while John Farley, ex Harrier Chief Test Pilot, provided
the commentary throughout the day. With nine entries this
year and a large variety of aircraft types from a motorised
glider through to a C-130H Hercules, the judges were kept
busy throughout the day!
Unusually there were two V/STOL aircraft designs entered,
Anthony Crowley from Brunel University with a Sea Harrier
and Ewan Douglas from Coventry with an F-35B.
The competition resulted in a tie for first place between Brian
Cranston and John Puttman from The University of Dayton
with their two-seat electric aircraft and Swansea University’s
team with its very light jet.
The Dayton students thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the
UK and were able to go to RAF Cosford’s Airshow and visit
the Royal Aeronautical Society while staying on campus at
Swansea.
2012 dates are 31 March for the USA IT FLIES at Dayton,
and 12 June for the UK version to be held in the brand new
aerospace laboratory at Coventry University.
Anyone who would like to enter either of these competitions
Royal Aeronautical Society / Handbook 2012
The Senior Research Fellow
in Air Power Studies
AIR COMMODORE (RET’D) DR PETER GRAY
The Fellowship is now in its fourth academic year and considerable,
measurable progress has been made over the three years of its
existence. One of the most important of these has been the almost
unanimous agreement that the Fellowship should be extended through
to a full ten-year project. This has been supported by industry, the Royal
Air Force and by the University of Birmingham which has agreed to
shoulder an increasing proportion of the financial burden.
The Fellowship has a number of facets ranging from the provision of
independent, expert advice to the media through to building a critical
mass of academically trained air power thinkers. This latter role has been
accelerated by the Fellow gaining his own PhD in the summer of 2010,
some two years early. He now has three full time and three part-time
doctoral students; in addition to this the Fellow has four MPhil students.
The topics being researched range from a deep cultural study of the
Royal Air Force, through the use of air power in counter-insurgency to an
in depth study of the evolution of the concept of control of the air. The
Fellow has designed and introduced a part-time (over two years), taught
MA in Air Power, History, Theory and Practice; the first year has proved
extremely popular and the next cohort starts in October 2011. The more
able students from this programme are already exploring taking their
studies further with research degrees.
Another key facet of the Fellowship is spreading the air power message
to a variety of audiences. He has submitted a number of influential
contributions on contemporary issues such as current operations and
the impact of the Strategic Defence and Security Review to the House
of Commons Defence Committee (through the Society) and on TV and
radio. The Fellow has been invited to give annual lectures and keynote
addresses to a wide variety of audiences including the Society’s Annual
Conference, the Chief of the RAAF’s Conference in Melbourne in 2011
and to a range of academic audiences.
The Fellow has just finished his first monograph which looks at the
strategic leadership, direction and legitimacy of the Strategic Air
Offensive against Germany and this will be published in 2012. He has
also produced a range of articles for peer-reviewed journals as well as
for the Society’s own publications. With his PhD behind him, the Fellow
is now engaging in several research projects including collaborative work
with King’s College London and the USAF Air University at Maxwell. A
further project is underway with the German Research Institute in Paris
into the culture of military organisations in the nuclear era. The next few
years will undoubtedly be busy and exciting but it is extremely satisfying
to see so much of the promise maturing in such a way.
Corporate Partners / Royal Aeronautical Society / Handbook 2012
Exclusive to Corporate Partner staff, the
Society runs a programme of senior level
evening briefings and an annual Corporate
Partner Seminar aimed to examine the
prospects of the aerospace community in
the year ahead. The Society also welcomes
attendance by Corporate Partners at its Society
events, in particular the Annual Banquet and the
Royal Aeronautical Society Golf Day.
Corporate Partner Briefings provide a forum for
frank and open discussion on issues that are
topical and relevant to the aerospace industry.
The Society has an excellent track record
of securing high profile speakers to deliver
the briefings, including Heads of Industry,
Government Ministers and influential figures
from both academia and the public sector.
Attendance at briefings is a key benefit of
corporate membership and these events are
well attended at the highest levels of the
aerospace community.
