24HR Art – Northern Territory Centre for Contemporary Art, Darw<strong>in</strong>, <strong>Australia</strong> The project, ‘A <strong>First</strong> <strong>Life</strong> <strong>Residency</strong> <strong>Project</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Landscape</strong>’, is a residency project that will br<strong>in</strong>g together contemporary visual artists from <strong>Australia</strong> and Ch<strong>in</strong>a to collectively experience the landscapes and cultures of northern <strong>Australia</strong> and regional Ch<strong>in</strong>a. As the title suggests, the project is designed to be an <strong>in</strong>tensive ‘real life’ cultural and creative exchange. With the artists act<strong>in</strong>g as cultural anthropologists, they will explore landscapes as be<strong>in</strong>g physical repositories of human attitudes, customs and beliefs. The artists will be asked to consider how people’s practices, beliefs and concepts have been <strong>in</strong>formed and determ<strong>in</strong>ed through liv<strong>in</strong>g with<strong>in</strong> particular landscapes. The <strong>Australia</strong>n and Ch<strong>in</strong>ese artists will travel by road through the landscapes of northern <strong>Australia</strong> visit<strong>in</strong>g remote regions and communities <strong>in</strong> Arnhem Land and the Kimberley. They will then undertake a road trip through south western prov<strong>in</strong>ces of Ch<strong>in</strong>a, from Lanzhou to Lhasa. The f<strong>in</strong>al stage will see the artists undergo an <strong>in</strong>tensive studio session <strong>in</strong> Beij<strong>in</strong>g to produce new works <strong>in</strong> response to their adventures for an exhibition to be held <strong>in</strong> Beij<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g 2011 as part of the ‘Year of <strong>Australia</strong>n Culture <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a’.
