NOTES FROM THE CHAIR
Debbie Matthews, Sierra Club
Hello Everyone,
We, (the Miami Group ExCom) have noticed how
important hearing about current issues are to you
(members, environmentalists and concerned citizens). We
would like to start a "Hot Topics" portion to our General
Meetings every month. This will start at 7:30 PM and go
to 8:00 PM. Each month we will talk about the current hot
environmental issue, and open the floor to questions and
discussion. We will have the person speaking about the
issue moderate, so we have some order to the discussion
and it is not a free for all. This will give us more time to
really find out about some serious issues going on in our
own backyard, and what we can do to help.
At 8 PM we will call everyone together, (including those
that went on the balcony to socialize), and start our meeting
with quick announcements and go right to our speaker.
This month's "Hot Topic" issue is the Port of Miami
Expansion, and Blanca Mesa will be our moderator. Please
come to hear about this and ask questions. This project
could potentially ruin Biscayne Bay. If you have read the
NY Times article about the coral reefs in Sunday's paper,
that is just part of this issue. We have to try to get our
decision makers to open their eyes and stop this insanity!
Our outings are listed as
Leisure, Moderate, or
Strenuous. Be realistic about
your physical condition and the
degree of challenge you enjoy.
Come ready to paddle, bicycle
or hike and share the work.
There are no passengers on our
outings, only participants. Family trips are open to
everyone. Once you have made a reservation, we ask that
you make a serious commitment to attend the trip.
Cancellations are detrimental to our program. Our outings
leaders are unpaid trained volunteers.
Camping trip fees typically include food, transportation,
canoes and campground fees. Trip participants need to
furnish their own tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, and
personal gear. Because of changing costs, outing fees
listed may be changed at the opening of the trip.
If you are interested in a trip, call or e-mail the trip leader
and ask for details or come to the signup table at the
general meetings. Reservations open at the general
meeting three months in advance of the trip. At the leader's
discretion, reservations close one week before the date of
the trip. Please sign up early for planning purposes. All
reservations must be accompanied by a non-refundable
deposit. Make all checks payable to Sierra Club Outings.
Please write the name and date of your trip on your check
and include your phone number. Deposits are $10 on trip
fees of up to $100 and $20 on trips over $100. Fees on
trips of $15 or less are to be paid in full with your
reservation. Full payment is due 30 days in advance of
the trip. Please send all payments to the trip leader.
If you must cancel, call the leader or assistant leader as
early as possible. If you cancel 30 days or more in
advance, your deposit will be refunded. If you cancel less
than 30 days in advance, you lose your deposit. If you
cancel 7 days or less in advance, you will forfeit all fees
at the discretion of the leader.
Miami Group Outings Schedule
2011 - 2012
7:00 PM
Come hang out with your
fellow Sierra Club members
at our monthly
social night at Titanic
Brewery in Coral Gables.
Have a beer, or two,
and chat with like-minded
individuals. Discuss the
environment or
simply the latest show on
TV while relaxing in a
welcoming atmosphere.
Enjoy one of their many
veggie burgers and get your
first beer on us!
Hope to see you there!
INNERCITY OUTINGS
ICO IS GROWING!
ICO provides opportunities for
inner city youth to experience
the outdoors in a natural
environment through
snorkeling, boating, biking,
service projects and camping
activities. We partner with
agencies that work with
young people and are happy
to welcome two new agencies
this month: Positive Contacts
Inc. and Miami Dade County
Foster and Adoptive Parents
Association. Both agencies
work with under-served youth
and welcome the opportunity
to enrich their programs by
joining us.
If you know of any agency
that may want to offer these
opportunities to the youth
they serve, or, if you would
Outings- ICO is doing a great job and had 26 outings this
year. EXCOM Committee would like to see more outings
for general membership, particularly family outings- but
we need more volunteers to go through the two day
training.
Melinda suggested a new format for the General
Membership meetings. At the beginning of the evening
we could cut back the time on socializing. Instead we
would have 15-20 minutes of a current environmental
concern (ex. Turkey Point). A Sierra Club member with
expertise in that area would give us background on the
issue and then have a question and answer period, then
explain ways members can get involved. Betsy suggested
calling it "Sierra Club Hot Topic", and all members were
in agreement to try the new format. We would still have
a main speaker for the evening, beginning at 8:00 pm.
A new student member has requested $250 to help fund
her trip to SPROG in Atlanta. SPORG is an environmental
conference for students. The money would come out of
our Education Budget. Six voted in favor of the funding,
two against.
Bradley showed an environmental video that he is
working on. He was given positive feedback for the video
and for all the time involved in this activity.
