The Skin<br />
1. The epidermis produces melanin. Cells at<br />
the base of the epidermis produce new skin<br />
cells. The dermis contains nerves, sweat <strong>and</strong><br />
oil gl<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> blood vessels.<br />
2. The skin protects the body, reduces water<br />
loss, produces vitamin D, <strong>and</strong> helps to<br />
maintain body temperature.<br />
3. Severe skin damage can lead to infection<br />
<strong>and</strong> death if left untreated.<br />
The Muscular System<br />
1. Skeletal muscle is voluntary <strong>and</strong> moves<br />
bones. Smooth muscle is involuntary <strong>and</strong><br />
controls movement of internal organs.<br />
