<strong>District</strong> energy systems are essential to reducing CO2 emissions and increasing<br />
energy efficiency in our cities. The environmental, economic and social benefits of<br />
harnessing surplus heat and using local renewable energy sources make district<br />
heating and cooling the sensible choice <strong>for</strong> communities seeking to promote<br />
economic growth while minimizing the environmental consequences. The time has<br />
come to recognise communities that have embraced district heating and cooling as a<br />
vital sustainable energy solution.<br />
The first <strong>District</strong> <strong>Energy</strong> <strong>Climate</strong> awards aim at recognizing the achievements cities<br />
and communities across the globe that demonstrate local district energy leadership in<br />
providing clean, sustainable energy solutions.<br />
The award serves to:<br />
• Provide a global benchmark <strong>for</strong> environmental excellence.<br />
• Provide a plat<strong>for</strong>m <strong>for</strong> sharing ideas and ef<strong>for</strong>ts that have made systems successful.<br />
• Identify and recognize systems that illustrate the overall importance of district<br />
energy in providing sustainable energy solutions.<br />
Eligibility<br />
Systems must have been in operation <strong>for</strong> at least two (2) years. Start of operation will<br />
be determined by the date of continuous service to first customer or facility.<br />
Benefits to Winners<br />
• International recognition at an awards ceremony that will be part of a <strong>District</strong><br />
<strong>Energy</strong> <strong>Climate</strong> Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, on 3rd November 2009.<br />
• A letter from the International <strong>Energy</strong> Agency in<strong>for</strong>ming the community’s mayor,<br />
president or city council or university or other designated individuals about the<br />
award.<br />
• A plaque symbolizing the award.<br />
• Large media attention through international press communique and conference.<br />
• Presentation of all projects submitted in a dedicated section on the summit website<br />
and in a special edition of a professional magazine with international outreach.
Submissions<br />
1. Cover sheet stating the name of the system, location of the system, name of the<br />
owner, type of ownership, and the name, phone number and address of the person<br />
submitting the portfolio.<br />
2. Photographs of applicable system facilities (not more than 10).<br />
3. Written description of the system, its history, configuration of production units,<br />
distribution network, number or square footage of buildings or customer facilities<br />
served, average age of production & distribution system facilities.<br />
4. Data and written description supporting the systems’s success in:<br />
•Lowering primary energy use and CO2 emissions in comparison to other<br />
available energy options.<br />
•Environmental compliance strategies successfully implemented (i.e. emission<br />
reduction credits, per<strong>for</strong>mance labelling, etc.)<br />
•Increasing energy per<strong>for</strong>mance of existing and new building stock<br />
•Utilising innovative technological solutions and developing strategies <strong>for</strong> the<br />
future.<br />
5. Written description and/or documentation of customer relations, customer<br />
satisfaction, communications and marketing ef<strong>for</strong>ts (customer newsletters/<br />
communications, customer service seminars, customer retention ef<strong>for</strong>ts, customer<br />
service improvements, etc.).<br />
6. General documentation of the positive impact the system and its employees have<br />
on the community or area served. This would include participation in professional<br />
organisations, awards and recognition received, involvement in community<br />
activities, letters from customers etc.,<br />
More than one system will be recognised with this award (4 size categories).<br />
Winners will be announced at the <strong>District</strong> <strong>Energy</strong> Summit on 3rd November 2009.<br />
