Named after the property, Saltaire. This was named after Saltaire, a 19th century English model factory town established Hoon Hay Salmond was a lawyer, university professor, law draftsman, solicitor general and judge. In 1968 the street names subcommittee of the council felt that as Halswell was named after a prominent English Queen's Counsel it would be appropriate to record the names of judges in street names. Many of them had been QCs or KCs before appointment to the Bench. North New Brighton The house was owned by William Allan Hopkins (1857- 1933) from the 1880s until his bankruptcy in 1920-1921. It was then bought by Charles Dixon of Dixon’s Butchers.
