Shand’s Track was an early informal name. Named after John Shand (1805-1874). Riccarton Shand arrived in Canterbury in 1851 on the Isabella Hercus. His block of land, 100 acres, Rural Section 95, ran from Riccarton Road to Blenheim Road and from Division Street to Wharenui Road. He named his home Avon Lodge. This was demolished when the street was formed. One of the street names chosen in 1940 for the State housing subdivision between Riccarton Road and Blenheim Road. The names were selected "as far as possible for their appropriateness”. Hornby and Hornby South Early survey plans back to 1862 show Shands Road. Current name Sharlick Street Christchurch Street Names: S Former name Shaw Avenue James Street, Nelson Street and Norton Street. Origin of name Suburb Additional information See Source Further information Named after Martin Sharlick (1866-1944). From Leaver Terrace to Bowhill Road was formerly Norton Street. Named after the auctioneering firm of Tonks Norton. From Seaview Road to the Rawhiti Domain was formerly James Street. Named after James George Hawkes. This was renamed Nelson Street. Named Avondale Sharlick was a farmer of Marshland Road. He worked with Reginald Gordon Vivian Muirson (1913-1990), a builder. First appears in street directories in 1960. New Brighton and North New Brighton James Street was formed in 1890 and re-named Nelson Street at a special meeting of the New Brighton Council on 12 August 1907. Harry Hawker (1868-1947), a councillor 1905-1909, had suggested that New Brighton street names be changed to the names of 18th and 19th century British sea captains. Nelson was a British admiral and naval commander. Norton Street is first mentioned in The Press in 1911 and first appears in street directories in 1924. The firm of Tonks Norton subdivided land in New Brighton in the 1880s and 1890s.
